  2. Got myself a drone as recommended by retroshite. It takes superb, high quality photos and videos although the quality may not show on the forum. I got the extended flight version which came with three Lipo batteries giving half an hours flight time each. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1178034 It only weighs 249 grams meaning you don't need a license to fly it. It connects to your smart phone where you can see whatever the drone sees. Max height of 1km and a range of about 4km. It also uses google maps to chart it's progress so if it loses signal it'll return to where it took off from.

  3. Home now, drove right across France from Colmar to St Lo in a oner, no motorways. 40 degrees in places. Arrived at the F1 in St Lo after midnight , machine wouldn't accept my booking code so we had to sleep in the car..😡 Next morning went to a little village called St Charles de Percy, where my grandad is buried in the war cemetery, killed 78 years ago to the day in action after landing on D Day.. Spent the day at the Normandy beaches then up to Dieppe for the ferry, 3 hours sleep on the ferry, then straight drive home from Newhaven to Fife. France is just dust, crops all dead and dried up it was never below 35 during the day the whole time. The middle of France is just empty, and hundreds of closed businesses and empty houses, but wherever we went, the roads were beautifully smooth and perfectly surfaced. The Rhine is pretty empty too, they cant use most of the barges as the water is too shallow, so everything's going by truck.

  4. We got the boat running, the tide came in up to my mate’s van, and so we did some sea* trials up and down the river. We couldn’t make it out to actual sea, as the tide was so high that we couldn’t go under the bridge - if you want it opened you have to book 2 hours in advance. Successful day though, good to see the boat running again. One of the things that we had to fix was the impeller setup that feeds sea water through as coolant… the mooring is tidal and I got in late one day, and trying to send it through the mud didn’t do the gearing inside any favours 😅 11/10 should have used a Land Rover

  6. Miss Masters is nearly seventeen, so obviously potential cars have been discussed. She told me she'd seen a lot of Nissan Micras around, I wasn't sure which on she meant so looked up their history-she had been taking about K12s, but when she saw a K10 said that's what she really wants. My work here as a parent is done.

  8. I happened to see the Bridgewater Car and Steam Show on FB when a notification popped up yesterday for today. Mrs SiC parents and brother+wife are down this weekend. My Father-in-law was supposed to be going on some Hawk thing at the local Hawk Conservancy today but was cancelled as it was too hot for the birds. So instead I suggested him and I go down to the show. I wasn't expecting much but I was happily surprised with the amount there. Good varied selection without too much repetition. Quite small but large enough in this weather that 2hrs was sufficient. PA guy was talking a right load of guff. I should have recorded the conversation he was having with one of the owners of a hydrolastic car. So bad you couldn't make it up. I thought I got everything but the heat was stopping my neurons from firing properly and I think I missed a bunch of stuff. Like for example the front of the Frogeye - but that was probably from me being intoxicated from viewing it. One of the few cars that really excite me about the thought of buying. I'm not a Ford fan but this Granada really did float my boat. This Lanchaster was very nice. Would love to have a go in one, one day. My FiL couldn't understand why someone would spend so much time and money tarting this Mondeo up. I couldn't find anything to disagree with him on that! Another car that I'd love. Bit out of my price bracket really though. I think these Datsuns are ace and look fantastic. Another car I'd quite fancy. I do like classic Jags but the big Jags don't really do it for me though. The Frogeye I was talking about at the top. Well done for getting this far without either getting bored or having your internet connection die. Plenty of bikes. I don't know much about motorbikes but they looked shiny and nice. A banger racer survior car. Not much in the way of steam and hidden away a bit. There was also the usual bunch of stationary engines. I'll upload a video of them separately as they're more interesting when operating. Something hypnotic watching one chug away. Plus bonus Battle of Britain Hawker Hurricane flypast footage at the end. Open again tomorrow. Fiver each entry wasn't too ridiculous nowadays.

  9. Well it’s nearly built up now. Had to remove the radiator then loosen the crank pulley to allow me to get my fingers in to put the bottom bolt in. Which I lost somewhere, luckily I have a box full of CIH nuts n bolts so a spare was easily found. the radiator is drained and flushed with a hose pipe, a little orange gunk came out but not too much. all I’m waiting for now is the thermostat housing to be drilled and tapped for the bleed screw and fingers crossed the cooling system should be good to go.

  10. Sorry that the day ended less gloriously than it began. It's a very old car that probably has not been driven too far in a while. I'm sure the new day will bring restored enthusiasm. With a little bit of love and tinkering I'm sure it can be made reliable. I agree that it's most likely a fuel issue. Id expect an old diesel engine to start on compression alone in high ambient temperatures even if the heat cycle isnt working. Charge the battery, change the filters check the pump etc and I'm sure you'll fall back in love with it once it's running smoothly.

  11. I don’t keep my bad decisions restricted to land based transport. Me and a mate have been sharing this for about 3 years or so. Last year it got completely ignored, so this year we are trying to undo the neglect. When I got it, my partner didn’t want to go out in it and that was part of the reason I lost interest last year. This year, she’s asking if she can go out on the boat with me as the weather is nice 😅

  17. At 3am, a car alarm started to go off. I was asleep. Snoring soundly. My wife was not. Being 1) Scottish from the clan Ferguson 2) Ex Copper 3) Taekwondo Black Belt She headed out into the night, armed only with the metal poker from the log burner and a determination to gut a cat thief like a fish. A blunt ended poker may not have been the best choice for this. Anyway. The neighbour who had managed to set off the alarm on their own car, after returning from a long shift, got the shock of their life and the CRV Cat was still in place. I have just checked and at 8am its still there

Not sure if this is a grump or a grin. The wife took the old Granvia in for a mot and it failed on "brake pedal anti slip provision worn". So I cut a bit of ribbed drawer liner to shape and "Tiger Sealed" it to the pedal. OEM fix right there. I had the hump with this tbh it was rubber coated and still securely fixed to the pedal I was tempted to run a few lines of weld across the face of the pedal but couldn't be asked to drag the mig down from the shed.

  21. So today my brothers took me out to eat and we also visited a place called 'Pêle Mêle' near the Grande Place. Pêle Mêle is a kind of a Hipster-mart with loads of second-hand CDs, records, books, BD (bande dessinée/hard-back comic books which is very popular over here) and some train/car models. Of course, the thing that I was most interested in was the car models: These were Ok to start with, nothing really took my fancy especially on a massively depleted budget. But then...... Yeah. Budget was gonna take another hit. Ah well. What I bought was a 1.43 Opel Zafira for 6 €, they are £20 / 25 € on eBay. Plus I had a Zafira before. The Renault Espace was very nice but I already have it. The Bburago and Matchboxes were what I bought yesterday. Other cars: Other (non-car) stuff of interest: I had a Mega Drive, complete in box. Gooorn 😔

  23. I love this car already despite the issues. And I am sure that this will be reliable when I get to work on it fixing it and carry out maintenance and various things. And I think most of the problems with the car are due to it not being well taken care of in recent years. But one thing is certain the seller (used car dealer) of the car was not honest. We struggled a lot to get it started and according to him, this had not happened until now, which I immediately realized was a lie. And it was very clear that he didn't know much about cars either and one of the things he did before I bought it was washing it and it has bad gaskets so the boot was full of water. But the car seems solid and that was the main reason why I bought it, even though the seller was clearly lying and there were problems.

  29. Bought some £5 headlamp paste gloop which worked ok. I’ve only done one, mind. Lazy! They are xenon lights which presumably when they go wrong will be another potentially costly bork. I also need to get around to fitting the replacement rad but it only really leaks on a long run, of which a run to get a pizza is not one of them. I like the rear 3/4 view on these. For a moment I thought the hydropneumatic suspension had collapsed at the back, but it’s just how it’s sitting on the kerb. That’s the life of a pound shop CL owner, on alert for impending implosions.

I am an adult honest: This in Tesco made me so frustrated. Thieving shits, it's not like they're expensive models. Or food. Still, I am finding some rare ones in the mix. Still only buying things on appeal rather than trying to complete sets. Though my colleagues got me a "get well soon" set. I have a couple of spares... This isn't counting the unboxed ones around the house, which I may have shared - the windowsill of 4x4s being the main collecting bug, but now I am focused on Art Cars that I like (so very picky, I'm liking the Mondrian pickup for example). Some of the factory or J-import sets may go if I need to make space. 4x4s and cars I've owned/dream cars are always the priority!

Nice idea in principle but all modern electronics are crap and all 3 of the LED lights above the benches went POP within a minute of being switched on. The fluorescent tube continues to work. Still, managed to clean up the cylinder head. Next up, lapping in the valves. Phil

  37. Spent the last 2 days trundling around the French countryside to take a friend to look at replacement cars. Her current temporary car is a UK registered Ford Kuga and the starter failed in Lemans the other day so I had to go and tow start it for her. WOW - prices of secondhand cars here are mad. Yesterday looked at a 1.4 MPI Dacia. Dented, no air con, 2009 4500euro. Today, looked at a tidy 2008 Cashcow with 232k km. 6k euro. Star of the show, same garage had a 2005 Renault Modus Diseasal with a new engine. Tidy, but 6500 euros! Why the grin? Basically there are 3 reasons. 1. I don't have to buy in this market. 2. When tow starting the Kuga, whilst attaching the rope to my 9-3 'vert Saab that I have owned coming up to a year, I discovered it has a tow bar, something I really wanted. Just need to buy the detachable bit. 3. The biggest reason for the grin? Enjoying good condition roads, with no traffic in a convertible, top down in 38c temperatures, with the aircon blowing cold air on my feet and face. Heaven.

  39. Yep, i agree with Dyslexic Viking. We import shitloads of American crap while we happily export European cars to countries with better taste than us. We have lots and lots of gravel roads. Think roughly 50%. Yes, it is a Swedish registration certificate. The date 2006-03-29 is the date when the certificate was issued. So it has nothing to do with an export date. Byggservice i Ã…nn is still going strong, building stuff. AB stands for Limited company. Submits 2 phone numbers. I did a search on Trafikverket (Swedish road department) and came up empty. There is no new vehicle registered as DOM201.

  40. I agree with the others who have said that it wouldn't have made a jot of difference whether a reheated Honda Ballade with an interior by Berni Inns was called a Rover or a Triumph. I work for a company with a similar ethos to the old Austin/MOWOG/Nuffield/Leyland quagmire, which essentially is that it is better to amalgamate than to compete. If you can't beat the opposition in a fair fight, buy them out. It works on paper: all of a sudden the respective boards of MG and Triumph are no longer having to worry about whether the Much ADO16 About Nothing is outselling the two-door Toldyaso, and the moguls can settle down to port, cigars and wife-swapping. It does not work in practice; each company cedes some of its attributes and values to the parent, and removal of key competitors fosters laziness amongst management. Both companies end up worse. Consumers are a fickle lot too, and capricious. If the merger results in MG badges on the Triumph Toldyaso, half will complain; if Triumph badges end up on the Much ADO, the other half will pipe up. Die hard supporters of each marque will claim their respective favourite has been damaged, even if they didn't much like it before the amalgamation. Often, being too big results in poor commercial practices and management decisions. A bean counter will realise that the Much ADO's steering wheel is 25 pence cheaper than the Toldyaso's, so will order it fitted to all future cars, despite it being too big for the Toldyaso's cabin and rendering it impossible to shut the driver's door. Another bean counter will notice that Triumph save circa £1 million a year on Hydrolastic units because they don't buy any. He will fail to account for the fact that the Toldyaso uses coil springs instead and will stipulate that all Much ADOs must now have no suspension at all. And on it goes. Rover, over; Triumph Schmiuph. BL were too big, too unwieldy and too arrogant to be able to take the fight to their real competitors. As Warren said earlier, the Sierra and Cavalier weren't much better than a Montego, but that wasn't the point. People thought the Fords and Vauxhalls were superior, and that's all that mattered. Back in the eighties dropping the kids at school in a Fiesta meant nothing whatsoever, dropping them off in a Maestro meant that they got bullied. It's all a matter of perception.

https://www.printables.com/model/258068-austin-princess-interior-light-cover The before is my literally crumbling original lens. The after is a raw print, no sanding or finishing. This is a direct replacement part and, because it's a thing you can 3d print to demand, you can make them any colour you can get the materials you use in. As far as I'm aware, this is the only replacement part out there and this is a part that's been unavailable for quite a long time. Best of all, the download is FREE, so as long as you have access to a 3D printer this part shouldn't cost you a great deal to create.

  42. well this is going pretty well! I was able to chat to the current owner of the port hole car, and figure out exactly which Model 70 it actually is and as I thought, its just a case of swapped ID's so I have given each owner each others contact details and hopefully they can get in contact and swap the ID's round the only thing I am worried about is indeed the owner of the port hole car, has sent off the V5 for GIG to do a keeper change, and the owner of real GIG has sent off a V62 in the past week so I am not sure what the DVLA will make of that! I think this will be a case of having to sit back and wait for the results to present themselves I am hoping that it will just keeper change twice in quick succession, or that the V62 happens first and thus the V5 in the ebay ad will become old and the DVLA will reject the keeper change on the old V5 and the owner, can just say "sorry I thought this was the current V5 for the car but my bad its not" but who knows! but yeah very pleased as I have finally ID'ed what the port hole car is and finally figure out the mystery of GIG4834 this whole thing something that I have been wondering about for a long time, and something I know Stuart has been scratching his head with for over 10 years now! (and it may explain why initially Stuart thought the Port hole car was GIG, but thats something for me to further discuss with Stuart )

  44. Fixed the intermittent warning of a defective tail lamp ah you may say, was it a loose connection in the lamp cluster? no what about an earth issue? no, well, technically so there I was, in a car park, 35 miles from home this morning taking the electrical system apart, not like I need the car to go to work this afternoon, anyway unplugged loom connectors, inspected everything the fault, passenger side electric window switch on the drivers door dirty connector, cleaned that up and all is fine Puddle lights are brighter, wipers are faster, and my single working interior light is brighter plus no more warnings! with a Citroen XM, the cause of the fault is always the complete opposite thing you’d expect recent development, sport mode light doesn’t illuminate upon activating the switch, it does with ignition so that’ll likely be tailgate struts or something daft i also hear these cars had an absolutely horrendous reputation when new

  47. Two 4wd VW vans? Why not buy yet another. Bought sight unseen from Edinburgh with some quite upsetting pictures, the price was right. I was sort of convinced it was a scam advert, it was very cheap and the ad text seemed a little "off" but when the seller (who has owned it since 1998) showed me his spreadsheet detailing every penny he'd ever spent on it my mind ws put at ease, especially when he pointed out the 5 new "Tigar" tyres that have plenty of tread left. These are 17 years old and are falling apart. I've always wanted another panel van t25 after regretting cutting mine up to put windows in years ago, and I've got a soft spot (soft fucking brain!) for a syncro, and this is both. Seems un-buggered-about-with. It's a 1.6TD, which are pretty bloody agricultural so that might not stay (PD/1.8t?) This will be a bit more "hands off" to start with - Our very own Ceri will be collecting it and deliverying it direct to DST who did the welding on the last one. This needs much the same (and more): Dan is booked up into next year, but he seems OK with storing it there for a while. I'll pop up and we'll have a look over it and decide exactly it's fate - if it will make a very good van, then we'll make a very good van out of it. If it's too sore to be perfect then we'll make it safe and solid. Please form an orderly queue for the wheeltrims.
