There was no way in hell I was going to let this defeat me. So, I sat on Archimedes*, attached to the crank snout nut. I then repeatedly engaged the starter motor, which gave a shock large enough to fractionally move (1-2° a go) the crank round. It started to spit ATF out of the plug holes and finally it let go and span freely! So, naturally at 8:30 on a sunday night I had to put the plugs back in and see if it would fire. Which it did. Not well at all and only on a few pots but.. IT GOES. Phil *The name of my cheater bar. Don't you name your big tools?15 points

Well you all know what it is already. With thanks to @petermcpetefor the effortless purchase and @worldofceri / @Inspector Morose for the equally pleasant and professional service as usual. It starts. It runs. Everything works except the clutch. The clutch fluid pipe does look a little suspect and I think that will be my first port of call. On top of that it's not even rusty, just a couple of minor cosmetic welds to do / ignore for years. It needs a couple of little jobs done, like the choke reattached and an air filter fitted. Mrs Juular could not be happier with it, so that's me in the good books. Oh yeah.. And finally...13 points

ZX MOT day tomorrow
privatewire and 10 others reacted to GregZX for a topic
Purchased this little monstrosity in April and have done about 300 miles since then, albeit slowly, whilst I did a few jobs to clean it up mechanically and cosmetically. Now it's the dreaded MOT tomorrow, a week early because I just NEED to know what has to be fixed. Jobs done by me so far - full service (oil, air filter, fuel filter) - front brakes stripped and cleaned which also helped with a binding front wheel - new timing belt, auxilliary belts and water pump (surprisingly easy job and of course I didn't use Citroen's special tool) and coolant changed - exhaust tarted up but it's still leaking - the very small amount of surface rust treated and the underside waxoyled and some bits painted with Corrosol. - leaking rear shock cleaned up (new one bought anyway) Issues which will cause MOT failure; - leaking brake cylinder (I'm expecting the brake shoes to be shot also) - absolutely no nearside handbrake action - exhaust leak - cracking tyre wall on offside rear - EMISSIONS - praying the catacleen and Esso 99 I pumped in does the trick There's also a nasty noise under load which I'm putting down to a worn rear engine mount (purchased!!) causing excessive movement in the exhaust system and making the cat hit off the floorpan. Or something like that. It's actually ruining what is a very nice driving experience so it needs fixed. Also helpfully the central locking has ceased to work. All wires have been checked and are fine as is the fuse. Thus I can only put it down to the little box that lives beside the handbrake. Anyway we shall see.11 points -

Before I was a bus driver I did eight years airside at Glasgow as a load controller; our airside buses were a couple of DAFs (H104 VUB & R987 FNW) and four Dennis Lances (L21/3 AUS, M726 HHS, K740 YPJ), as was mentioned Edinburgh had some Pointer Darts - M882-4 XSC and N301 HSC from memory. "Proper" airside buses are generally built to a 3m width and are very difficult, if not impossible to road register as they don't really meet C&U regs. Generally speaking most of our airside kit was pretty done but a lot of it had been road registered in the past if it wasn't too specialised; it wasn't uncommon for rebodying to happen, where stuff like Air Start Units were mounted on multiple chassis as they tended to last pretty long and were expensive to replace. British Airways registered almost everything until well into the 1990s, ULD loaders, cargo kings, electric tugs, pushback tractors, the lot; I went to the chippy in a Douglas DC10H registered C608 XLF, before it was rapidly deregistered and replated as AV02 212 🤣 We tended to replace the road registrations with fleet number plates when vehicles went airside only, Servisair tended to remove every trace of ID and just number them - this was a requirement for Airside Operations for ID purposes; the same Volvo FL6.17 in three photos here, G635 VMM at Gatwick in Midland livery, then as AV01 635 with aviance, then 29-3744 with Servisair. @Urkoas an aside, no matter what chassis it actually was, any flatbed baggage lorry in our place - Transits, LDVs, EuroCargos, Ford Cargos, DAF 45s, anything at all - was always referred to as a bantam. It was the end of 2010 when I left...9 points -

Sold my SLK a couple of weeks ago and instantly regretted it, the moment it drove away I missed it! So I thought so what's better than a 200 SLK, well a 350 SLK!. So the hunt was on, had to be facelift (meaner look) had to have heated seats and air scarf. A few days on autotrader and one popped up. Really really nice bloke selling, owned it almost 6 years but was 110 miles away. I hate travelling for cars now but I had to go! And it was everything as described and better, loads of factory options not listed on advert and the facelift cars are 305bhp so it absolutely flies! Just thought I'd share lol, I'm like the pig in poo today Third and fourth pics are collection pics after rain!8 points -

This was after about half a mile - from mine to “the estate”. When I first booted it out of my street the only word for the amount smoke it made is BIBLICAL. Caps required. It’s a pity I didn’t catch that! A mix of Blue, White and Black. All the smoke. It got loads better in just driving to where I could film. Then I found a dual carriageway with a roundabout each end and did a few laps. It’s calmed down now. Bear in mind this is the 1st time this thing has been out of 1st gear and idle since about 2003. I did a bit of revving when bleeding the coolant, but no load. I can’t believe they want these things banned from Cities. Nanny State.7 points -

Latest arrival, another one ticked off the wantlist. It's Mebetoys A46 Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato, of course! A perfect example of the sort of thing I like. Weird subject matter, high-quality casting, very rare in the UK. This is a first series version, released in 1971. Later models were slightly simplified with the distinctive plastic rear bumper becoming part of the casting, a very approximate cast-in engine and slightly less detailled interior. This early one has a great engine and a very accurate interior Seen here with its close rival, the Fulvia coupe, also by Mebetoys This is another of those oddball cars which was modelled by a handful of companies. There is the large-scale plastic Ankar version, the Mebetoys and also a Solido. The Solido is a delight particularly at the front - it perfectly reproduces the real thing's most distinctive feature, the plexiglass front end, with individual jewelled headlamps behind a plastic panel. Always keeping an eye out for one of these but they don't come up often at an affordable price. (stolen pic)7 points

So back to Sheffield and pics I took 50 years or more ago and continuing in fleet number order. After the Jumbos were a large batch of rear entrance vehicles so lets start with the batch of 40 Weymann bodied Regent Vs that were new in 1957 and were the 27'6" version. The letter 'A' on the front indicating it was part of the Corporation owned fleet. I bet the doogooding woke brigade would be up in arms about adverts like this (or ones that said "Tetley bitter MEN") on the sides of buses these days. Also delivered in 1957, and again a batch of 40, were these Roe bodied Leyland Titan PD2/20s. A study of arsess. The one in the middle is a Roe bodied Regent III that hadn't been fitted with the latest requirements for rear lights and indicators on buses. There's two reflectors on the bottom of the panel but just a single rearlight and brakelight above the reg plate. The two Weymann Regent V's have been modified with an small panel on the platform to take a combined side, stop indicator light as has also been fitted to the offside. 798, on the left, has had the panel above the reg plate altered whilst 818 has simply had the old lights painted over. Following the Roe bodied Titans were a rather unusual purchase by Sheffield Transport in 1960 (as part of the tramway replacement program), 20 Alexander bodied Regent Vs, these being the 30' version and the only Alexander bodied Regent Vs supplied new outside Scotland.. Here's 874 on the appropriately* named Flat Street, this was the vehicle that I would be involved in the preservation of for a time and is also the vehicle I passed my PSV test on back in early 1978. Delivered a year earlier were the corporations first Atlanteans with MCW bodywork. This crap photo of 896 was taken in crap weather outside the Town Hall, before the planners decided that people didn't need to have buses going through the middle of the main shopping areas in the city.7 points -

I’ve used that stuff back in the day and it is very good. These days I’m not into ‘detailing’ and more just cost effective ways of making things look less shit. Read on forums over the years about Cherry Blossom liquid shoe wax and how people have done their bumpers and years later it looks exactly the same with no fading.. I did the Transit months ago, posted pics in that thread and it still looks exactly the same now. For £1 a bottle it’s bloody amazing7 points -

As alluded to elsewhere, the Innocenti passed its MOT this week. Somewhat to my surprise I have to admit - I was fully expecting it to need some obscure unobtainium bits, but I was relieved that it didn't. I drove it 25 miles on Friday evening to go and see a mate - I'd forgotten how fun it is, despite the lack of power. The steering is like a go-kart and it's great fun to fling around. It's not running 100% right, it stutters every now and then under acceleration, but it has been off the road for nearly five years so not unexpected. I suspect the fuel filter is full of crud - I've got a new one to go on. Next weekend I'm going to fit the new gearbox mount as the one on the car really is beyond a joke now. I'm also going to have a crack at adjusting the clutch cable to see if I can get any more life out of the clutch - the adjuster is a plastic knurled nut which is probably quite brittle by now so I'm going to have to be gentle with it - I've been soaking it in GT85 to see if I can free it off. I might still need to change the clutch but I'd like to put that off if I can - some of the bellhousing bolts look a right twat to get to. I drove the Volvo to Tesco yesterday. It's still running fine, but the rear brakes definitely need looking at - I had to brake fairly hard on the way back to avoid someone coming round a corner and the back brakes stuck on. Looking at the offside, the outer pad is almost down to the metal where the inner pad looks nearly new, so that piston has definitely been sticking. I've ordered some new pads so when they get here I'm going to have a go at freeing the calipers off - I'm hoping they'll be easier to do than the fronts as they only have two pistons rather than four. The Renault 6 is still buzzing happily around - it reached 96K miles yesterday. I've had to redo the two bits of wob in the scuttle panel though as the previous effort (from about 8 years ago) was falling apart. I do have a replacement panel to be welded on at some point, but it's way beyond my abilities to do, it really needs to go to a professional body shop which I can't afford at the moment. I can't really patch up the existing panel with the welder either as the screen would have to come out and if it gets broken or cracked during the removal process finding a replacement will almost certainly be fun*. The 107 is still in use as the daily runaround. I've splashed out on a pair of upgraded speakers - these in fact: They do make the radio sound rather less tinny, although it's never going to be the most fantastic sound system. The Jag is still behaving somewhat oddly. I took it for a run up the coast road last Sunday evening - it was running fine and pulling as it should with no smoke or stuttering, but half way through the drive the DPF light came on. Not entirely surprising given the amount of clag it'd been putting out when I drove it into Norwich. So one evening last week I took it for a run, fairly late to ensure that the dawdling giffers had all gone to bed - I was going to drive towards Norwich then go down the northern bypass, but just as I got to the bypass roundabout the DPF light went out so I turned round and came home. It was running perfectly on the way down; on the way back it gave the odd stutter but no smoke that I could see. It's all a bit odd. I've booked it in to the local garage on Friday for a go on their diagnostic machine to see if they can make head or tail of it - I'm in two minds whether to spend a bit of money on it or whether to cut my losses and sell it as it is and buy something else... I do like the old thing though when it's behaving itself.7 points

More from the YORK Trailers archives. You're never going to see a trailer with this livery ever again, behind an F86 or not. Leyland, or should that be AEC (as they built them and they had the TL12 engine (turbo version of their AV760)). Think this is a Leyland Buffalo (as the Bison was the six wheeler), again a drawbar. More draw bar action, Ford D type this time. I'm guessing your local HGV Test Centre would have a heart attack if you rocked up with this trailer without all the modern side guards. MAN tractor unit. Lets finish with a trombone, hauled by an Atkinson with a GUY hauling the tanker.6 points -

Had an eventful day car wise… Visiting the parents in Stratford on Avon this weekend, and discover it’s the Volvo owners club national meet there this weekend. We made plans to duck off for a couple of hours. Cars a bit dirty… let’s take it to the car wash says the good lady. Hand car wash in Stratford is double the price of back home so off to the automated car wash it is. Mid wash it cuts out… and won’t restart. We end up having to push it out of the car wash… Spins but no catch. Check all the bits I can being 150 miles from home with no tools. Still nothing. Eventually 15 mins later it splutters back to life… and dies instantly. Another 10 or so minutes and we have life… odd. Must have been water in there somewhere. Drove it off to the Volvo national… only for it to cut out again and not want to restart at a junction this time. Fucksticks. 5 mins later it was going again. So drove it back to my folks instead and walked down to Volvo national. Apt sticker… Probably would have had more fun if a) I wasn’t trying to figure out what was wrong with my Volvo, b) we had had the Volvo in the meet. It was ok, not a massive meet compared to Saab and 2CV nationals I have been to before. Still the small matter of driving 150 miles home. Took a test run with my brothers to see if it would cut out and it didn’t, so braved the motorways with the littluns on board… that was stressful!! Breaking down on my own.. or with it he wife… meh. Breaking down with a 2 year old and a 5 month old… nightmare. However… Safely home, must have been water in the system somewhere. Once home my wife confessed she’d never been through an automated car wash before “I was always too scared of breaking down in one” she says…6 points

Tiny job done this afternoon...getting rid of these sun-baked and flaking off stickers on the Caddy's front windows. The passenger side one was horribly wonky too which was bugging me. It was also peeling away and causing the window to bind up. Got rid of these ones at the same time. I really hate stuff like this so surprised it took me this long. Much better. Can't remember who it was that suggested to me using WD40 to get rid of sticky residue on things a while ago, but I'm really glad they made the suggestion. The goop left behind by them just wiped straight off with it pretty much. Normal glass cleaner then gets rid of any residue from the WD40 easy enough.5 points

Lets continue with the 900 series buses which started at 901 with a batch of 14 Roe bodied PD3/1s delivered in 1959. We hired 913 for a tour just before withdrawal, and it's seen in Scunthorpe with an LRCC VR, MW and LHs in the background. It was converted to a driver trainer which prolonged it's life and is now happily preserved. They were followed by 18 MCW bodied PDR1/1 Atlanteans delivered in 1960. More Atlanteans followed in 1962, with Weymann bodies, and Roe supplied 6. There were three Fleetlines with Weymann bodies then more Weymann bodies on Atlanteans in 1963 (nice Westminster in the background), before the Corporation purchased 30 Daimler Fleetlines with what became known as the 'Sheffield' style body made by Park Royal in 1964.5 points -

indeed, it has been I almost made a post going off on a rant about it but held back it and the Austin 10 just a couple posts down are just a sad case of they fortuitously came across the vehicle for not much, have robbed it of its number plate for a quick buck and are now punting it on having stripped it of any residual value basically, I hate this type of plate robbery the most, its what infuriates me the most, as it does NOTHING for the vehicle, and their just profiting off likely someone else's good will or sad set of circumstances this sadly became all too prevalent with the MOT exemption as until recently a vehicle only had to be of an MOT-able type, theres nothing in the rules that say it actually had to have a current MOT and costing nothing to tax meant anyone could take any barn find, tax it and rob of its plate quite easily, and dump it thankfully the DVLA sometime in Late 2021 made it a requirement that any historic vehicle must have a current MOT, regardless of if its MOT exempt or not under historic grounds, to be eligible for a plate transfer, so by doing this thankfully will ensure that any historic vehicle that is to be robbed of its plate, will have to be brought up to a good road worthy standard, therefor ensuring that it has a future which pleases me greatly (as it prevents exactly whats happened above sadly the rule change was not introduced until after the Ford was robbed of its plate by the looks of things) as an aside I do wonder how many Personal plates are actually still out there rather then private plates, there used to be a time when a car wearing an old number was because it came from their grandfathers Austin 7 that the grandfather kept the number on when they scrapped it in 1956 and passed it down or such and it actually meant something to the family, not just some plate for some BMW Wanker to look cool in front of their peer group or such *grumble grumble grumble* can you tell I really dont like plate Robbery of this sort? like I can understand if you had a cherished vehicle and something tragic happened to it, wanting to keep the plate from it or even begrudgingly I can understand selling a vehicles plate to fund its restoration (although Im still not that happy about it but at least its for the vehicles own good) but this sort of "rob it and punt it on" just pisses me off so much so much for not going on a rant LOL4 points -

As usual I've hogged right into this old crate, ended up having the strip the front end off. Then i bought all the panels i needed from a banger racer up near Norwich and spent the last week prepping them all for paint and fitting them all back onto the car. Sadly i didn't take many photos at the time but you get the idea, I'm really pleased with the paint match, the wing from the breakers at been repainted the wrong shade of red so i done it again with a aerosol can and it looks fantastic. I still have a lot of little jobs to do, all the brakes have turned out to be shagged so I've spent a small fortune on three new calipers and new shoes and pads all round and i still need to find a alloy as the old one was too damaged to repair and it will need tyres too but hopefully you'll agree it's looking a bit better now.4 points
