    Gotcha ya bastard! The epoxy idea was the winner. I was hesitant to drill into it given I was working with relatively little meat on the area in question and I didn't want to wreck the threads or sealing surface in the housing. Can now actually get the parts ordered (about £200 worth so I didn't want to order anything until I knew I could get it apart!) and get it sorted.

  3. So I saw a cheaply advertised frontera sport. MOT until November, it had recently a new radiator head gasket, alternator, exhaust and cam belt The old boy seemed legit about servicing so thought sod it, for the price I will take a punt. It has the typical gaffer touches like matt brushed on paint , and steering wheel cover, not to mention the front wheel is the spare. The flat is mounted to the back of the boot, and It came with a spare tyre to replace the damaged one. I can hear the fan belt bearing whirling away so that will need replacing soon and the belt is old, which makes no sense as the alternator is new. I'd have done them in a pair. Overall it stinks of fags and dead pigeons but I'm going to give it a deep clean and sanitise it, then do some TLC, probably run it and see how she goes. Pics here: What do you reckon guys? 🤔

  4. And today I saw that Zoe Ball has taken a £380,000 per year cut in pay from the BBC, down to £980,000. It was stated that she said she "felt it was inappropriate to earn so much in the middle of a pandemic". All very noble Zoe, but you were paid that amount, you have not earnt it. There are millions of people that go out and work hard and actually earn what they are paid. Massive difference between "Pay" and "Earnings", at least in my eyes.

  7. Words and pictures time. This was one of those jobs that you expect to be quick and easy and isn't. Certainly trying to edit the video and photos down for updates demonstrated how much time actually had to go into it. The job in question is the starter motor. Since getting the car, the starter motor works some of the time on first start up and fairly reliably after a few tries, in between those two states it has usually needed a few taps with a stick to get it to engage properly. Mechanically the starter operates very well, it's just getting an electrical connection that's been the issue. Given the state of other electrical connections and wiring in the car, we had expected it to be something along the variety of cleaning contacts and so it was. First job, push the car out of the garage and get it up on a stand. Then get yourself under the car and try and figure out how you're going to undo the three bolts holding the starter on without removing the exhaust. I'd been advised removal of the exhaust was necessary and while it would certainly have made life easier, it turned out not to be needed. The big problem underneath the car is that when I had the socket and ratchet on the through bolt and nut, I couldn't swing either far enough before I hit the chassis or the exhaust. I didn't have the time to do this on the day I attempted it so packed up, put the car away, and waited until Pat was free of work when I was free of work to have another go. The next free time we had the car was wheeled out again, put on a stand again, and Pat had a good look to see if inspiration would strike a fresh pair of eyes. It did! He found he could get in with the ratchet from above and get a bit more swing if I held the spanner from below. After longer than either of us wanted, we had this one bolt out. The other two were much easier. As it happens, I managed to put this bolt back in from underneath the car on my own with a socket and spanner, using the spanner to turn the nut a tiny amount in the space available, while holding the bolt with the ratchet. It took a while, but it was also less grief than pulling off the exhaust. Our next obstacle was the bolt holding the main lead which we couldn't get any tools on. Normally this bolt is really easy to get to by just going under the front bumper and undoing it, there's not even a need to jack the car up because of the impressive ground clearance and access. Here's the view from the front with the starter removed. That's right, we had to remove the starter to undo the bolt. The reason for this was that the two wires that bolt on to the starter had been put on in such a way that the thinner wire with the crimped eyelet was acting like a locking washer and there wasn't any access to bend it out of the way. It looks like when it was last done up, it had bent and locked onto the bolt head as it was done up. Ah, but I'm a little out of order here. How did we get the starter motor out without taking the exhaust off? Well, it was a lot easier to simply disconnect the brake rod. The brake rod is held to a bracket via a clevis pin and cotter/split pin. Remove the two pins and the brake rod simply swings aside allowing you to finegle the starter motor out of the restrictive gap it lives in between the exhaust and the sump. Here you can see the offending crimp, the wire it was crimped to had gone very brittle and broke off when we first attempted to undo the bolt. It had taken us so long just to get this starter out that it was all we did that day on the car because of course we had to allow time to pack up all the tools and push the car back into the garage. We have a minor complaint with Imperial measurements too, one which we'll likely make again in the future. Both Pat and I grew up being educated on Imperial and Metric so we're good with feet and inches, centimetres and millimetres, the usual. But when it comes to fractions for sizes it is the most frustrating foreign language to us. I want to go a size up from a 3/8ths? No idea. A size down from a 1/4"? Not a clue. It will come with practice I'm sure, but right now it's just so much nonsense. Anyway, we had the starter off and let it sit in the house for a bit while we waited to have some time free to deal with it. As it happens, I was the first person to have any meaningful time spare and it being a mostly one person job, I got the role of starter inspector. We could have removed the inspection covers while the starter was fitted to the car but we wouldn't have got as good a look, nor been as able to clean it, as when it's on a desk. First job, unscrew the bolt that clamps the band around the body of the starter so we can get to see what state the commutator and brushes are in. Normally you don't need to remove the band completely, just slide it out of the way, but since repainting was on the cards we opted to remove it fully. Inside we saw that the commutator and brushes were quite dirty. Just moving the starter around to inspect it ended up with a lot of debris falling out of the case. Our theory that the internals were corroded and dirty seemed to be a sound one thus far. Next was to remove the end covers. The smaller cover allows access to the main spindle so you can rotate and clean the commutator without removing the starter from the car, it is held in with two small screws. The larger cover also houses half of the contact switch which is engaged by the starter knob inside the car by pulling the cable that's attached to the arm. The larger cover is held on by two additional screws. These both came off very easily. Once this was open another problem was apparent. There was a contact being made between the disc and plates of the contactor switch but it looked to just be in one small spot for the most part which didn't seem ideal. When you pull the starter knob in the car, it pushes the disc into contact with the plates on the starter motor, thus completing the circuit and allowing the starter to spin up and engage. As you can see, while the lever does move freely, all the bits that should be clean really aren't. After some time with contact cleaner, an old toothbrush, and cotton buds, I finally got the brushes moving freely in their sockets and got as much dirt as I possibly could off the surface of the commutator. The commutator surface has got some scores in it but I doubt it will cause significant issues with the operation of the starter. All of the copper components inside the starter are quite substantial and crude compared to modern equipment so I daresay the tolerances aren't particularly fine and will work perfectly well even when in quite poor condition. With all of the copper components cleaned as best as I could, I put the loose parts of the starter in the ultrasonic cleaner to remove the grime and some of the rust. It was quite effective. I didn't put the main body of the starter motor in the ultrasonic cleaner in part because that seemed like a bad idea and in part because it wouldn't physically fit. Instead, I scrubbed all of the rust I could off the body of the starter with a wire brush. After that, it was time to paint. I opted to hand paint everything with enamel rather than opting for faster aerosols. I felt this would be more in keeping with the car and would save me the hassle of a lot of fiddly masking. To make the painting of the parts easier, I used a cardboard box with holes in for the screws and starter motor, if you make the screw holes a little smaller than the screws, you can then wind the screws into the cardboard to hold them in place. A coat of Kurust, two coats of red oxide primer, and a two coats of black enamel later and everything was looking smart if not new. As with the water pump, this will give us both a quick visual reminder of what we've worked on as well as allowing the parts to be less than perfect and mellow out into the general look of the car. Cared for but not restored. Once the paint was hard enough, I reassembled everything and waited for the next opportunity to get on with fitting it to the car. Before the starter was refitted, one item that needed to be addressed was the clamping bolt for the bowden cable. Previously it had been this brass... thing. I'm not sure what tool it was made to fit but it certainly wasn't any tool I own, someone had gone to a lot of effort to make sure that no spanner, socket, or screwdriver could work with it. Quite remarkable really. We had a rummage in the odd fixings tub and found a screw with the correct thread pitch and a good flat end to the thread that will work much better. A hex headed bolt would have been better still, but we didn't have anything that matched the thread unfortunately so a cross head bolt will have to suffice. My plan was then to refit the starter and use the ACF-50 I'd ordered but hadn't yet arrived once the starter was back on the car. Typically, the ACF-50 then arrived, so I quickly removed the caps and gave the contacts a suitable coating. I didn't use any ACF-50 on the brushes and commutator, I had a memory (hopefully accurate) that commutators should be kept free of any sort of anything. Then it was finally ready to go back on the car. Which it did, with not too much difficulty happily. I did manage to get all three bolts back in without removing the exhaust and from underneath the car on my own. It would have been easier with Pat swinging a ratchet from above, but with patience I got the awkward nut and bolt tightened. To prevent the thinner wire's eyelet from behaving like a locking washer again, I fitted it before the thicker lead which meant everything seemed to line up and stay flat a bit better. The last thing was to reconnect the brake rod, which now moves much better than it did, and put a new split pin through the clevis pin to hold it in place. Now, you'll notice the distinct lack of one particular item. We haven't tested the starter. I had one of those moments where I looked at all the parts and couldn't for the life of me remember how to use them, realising only after the car had been put away how easy it would have been to hook up power and test the starter motor. So we're considering the fitting of the refurbished starter motor a calculated risk. There's no reason to believe it won't work now, it was sort of working when it came off the car after all and we've improved it internally so it should now work better, in theory. The next time we have the opportunity to do so we will test the starter motor, for now we'll just pretend it's okay. A surprisingly mentally taxing job in the end, probably because it was the first time doing this job on this particular car. We're looking forward to tackling either the radiator or the wiring next most probably, as time permits.

  10. Don’t forget the three grand quarantine fee!!! First day on the job vaccinating Kiwis today. Not doing the jabbing, just keeping tabs on them post vax and saving their lives in case. Quite bizarre to think the people are reliant on the fast reactions of three nurses and a financial adviser with two hours CPR training under his belt but an honour they think I am up to it. Was quite good. Resisted the temptation to talk to the punters about their investments and pensions and instead concentrated on getting 400 processed today (quiet). At the peak we hope to increase this by a factor of three or four. There were also some shots left over so I had my first one today so am Pfizered up. No improvement to mobile phone reception as of yet but Bill Gates just rang and asked me if I could put the TV3 News on as there was a story about a goat he wanted to see.

  14. This is the best thing on the whole of the internet. Without exception. I have watched it so many times I find myself whistling the main tune at work. Internally anyway, I'm not one of those postmen from the 1950s that goes round happily whistling. If you can't spare 12 minutes of your life, go to about 10.20. Many car ads in recent years have done similar things with CGI (Nissan Squashy springs to mind) but nobody has ever done this with the real thing. I also find it slightly ironic that they make this fancy publicity film (it's more than an advert) and yet in reality you couldn't buy one. They were generally just issued to various Communist Party hierarchy. And I love all the vivid colours in the showroom when 99 percent of them were black. I urge you to watch this, it will change your life. If nothing else, you'll have that tune stuck in your head for evermore.

Having fibreglassed the front end of this trailer's box, and now standing up-ended on that - I removed both the (previously just screwed-down) rear panel and the inside seat support ..so that I might have access to laminate inside there. ^ This in turn provided the facility to more easily reach down (rather than contort around inside) to laminate the underside length of the seat to side panels. That went well ..inbetween rain showers on Monday. But again rain stopped play earlier than I might have liked. Yesterday I was determined to get one with this supposedly quick job, even though that meant I had to stop every 45 minutes to put rain covers over it . . . ^ Rear panel seen refitted ..now onto the bridging-paste adhesive. And the grp corner panels trimmed for final fit. Again a clamped-in-place cross-brace was used to prevent the side's top corners from flaring out, and the weight of a 10ltr paint container positioned to keep the top-corner of the end-panel bowed-in while I bonded that grp corner in place.. By 3:30pm this was done on both left and right hand rear corners inbetween each (four or five) wave of heavy rain shower and the next wave of black cloud was looming overhead. ^ Inside filleting with the fibreglass bridging paste, in preparation for when I glassfibre laminate over it. There's a lot of physical contortion to working inside these corners, But for all the exercise ..I don't feel any the fitter for it ! - - - "I fought the law ..and the law won" .. but the laws of nature did conspire against me ! with weather fronts blowing in very quickly & without pity swirling all around, and gravity being a fickle helper who at one moment helped hold panels to their curved shape ..and/or the plastic rain covers in place .. to then suddenly swap sides to work with the weather who had cunningly made various shiny surfaces wet n' slippery. Together they highlighted what a right plonker I can be sometimes ! ..especially in those last minutes as the next wave of rain starts and I'm desperately trying to keep the end-grain of plywood dry . . . ^ (Previously) unopened brilliant white wall and ceiling paint 10L. Barely used masonary paint 5L. Neither lid came off, both cracked open. And just to spite me the black clouds flew by without unloading a single drip, and the sun came out to dry the paint quickly. I know.. it couldn't have happened to a nicer chap ! And no, since moving to an apartment.. I don't have empty pots which I might have used filled with water, instead of full-of paint ones ! I scooped the paint up as quickly as I could into two waste bins and then rushed off to get the garden hose out. Some of the paint had already started to dry into the concrete slabs, so it wouldn't just brush away with the broom. Just then the heavens now decided to open. It bucketed it down. I donned rain coat, and with garden hose in one hand and cordless drill with wire brush in the other was standing their in the rain trying to clean this mess up. Three hours of back breaking effort and the patio looks clean again. There was splatter on the walls but I spotted most and its all but gone now. 15L of premium paint..that was a costly learning experience. This morning. . nicely scrubbed (wire brushed !) patio. It's not raining ..and now the sun has the audacity to show it's face ! ..but I'm too knackered and feeling somewhat fkd off and with definite inclinations towards having a bonfire - so I'm taking the day off to bang my head against a wall. Hope your day was better than mine. Hey, it's just part and parcel of any job or ' hobby ' conducted out in the fresh air (fibreglass dust and fumes aside). And I'll be back bright and bushy tailed tomorrow .. you'll see. Bidding you a good'n Pete.

  19. Pretty sure! Other than in London itself I don't think I've ever driven anywhere that has a greater concentration of impatient, aggressive and selectively blind drivers as Milton Keynes. With the possible exception of Chicago in rush hour...Miami wasn't far off either. It has been confirmed that there is a good home available locally for the Xantia...so I'm going to properly kick the ball rolling to see how the logistics of getting the car which will be taking its place will unfold. She's a good car and with a bit of time spent will be an excellent one. Just got to that classic mid 90s car stage where there are quite a lot of little jobs that need doing and I'm really struggling to find the enthusiasm, especially using the car more or less daily. Having twice had issues recently with dead NOS parts left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth too I guess. Plus with the best will in the world to the designers, the Xantia is a fiddly car to work on...ten times better than the XM, but it's still annoying when you're trying to use it daily. Taking a step backwards a few years for the next car. I'm just far more comfortable with 80s cars where maintenance is concerned. Plus it's allowing me to tick one of the big items off my list that I've always wanted to have a proper shot of. Plus ticks a few additional practicality boxes which is a bonus.

  21. Yesterday was a bit of a car day starting with two new tyres for the Beetle. They were not worn out just badly dry rotted. Andyrew came over in the afternoon and took a wheel off the Peugeot 504 Cab to check the disc size. Fortunately a few years ago I bought a wheel rim width measuring calliper that was able to work around the hub. It turns out the the answer to the question is not 42 but 273! The XM had a totally flat battery and I had jumped it but the alarm kept sounding and needed a reset. My best battery charger has burnt out and using a starndard12 amp charger did not seem to start it charging so I put a cTec charger on it and eventually the charging light lit up. You need to have some charge in the battery to reset the alarm so I will try it later. I am now looking to buy a 20a/30a charger. I wanted to refit the boot spoiler on the BMW 323i and thought it was just a case of finding some nuts and bolts to get it fitted and reconnect the wires. Turns out at one end the bolts have been ripped out of the hard foam spoiler. Also the wires for the spoiler brake light have just been ripped out leaving short tails when they emerge from the foam. Andyrew volunteered to take the car and spoiler away and try and reunite them. I now have two MX5's on the drive, I do like the way they look.

  23. After winning and getting letdown buying large American motorhomes, I decided to buy British. It's a Bedford CF1 facelift of 1983 vintage, with the 2.3 vauxhall slant petrol engine in it.   24. I got a Frontera last Nov, it's been my lockdown project. Still plenty to do, it needs a tickle with the welder on the passanger rear sill before it MOT this Aug. I wasnt expecting much but they are in fact okay, not brilliant, just okay. It drives like an old truck but honestly that is part of the charm for me. Regarding your one, for £450, well bought sir. If it anything like the A series they are simple to work on. If you need spares there is a guy in Kent, Greg from Frontyspares I think, he breaks them. This is mine, pictures flatter it, 2.8 TDI Diamond.

  26. Now where are we with the fleet? Having done everything to it, I sold the Vespa sprint and I'm backing using my much loved LML- it's just generally more stress-free leaving it about the place. I acquired this 1 litre beater as a suitable chariot for the learner driver of the household, but I've been loving it too! It's ridiculously upright and tiny and the most basic of base. Specs include: Electric mirrors And nothing else. Locking is manual on each door with a key FFS. Was that even still a thing in 2006? The reason it's so great is all that SPACE in something SO TINY Parking turns out to be something to look forward to it's so bloody tiny. It's got 3 cylinders totalling 950 or so cc, and yes of course it's objectively slow but it's also surprisingly willing- torquey and yet quite willing to rev. It's almost exotic sounding isn't it? Okay, almost. If you listen to start of that video you can hear the fuel pump. At various times it sounds like it's going to self destruct- I really need to change it before it self destructs somewhere on the motorway in the rain. The problem is I hate spending money in garages on modern cars and I hate working on modern cars and it's a tank out job. The 3 cylinder roar is pretty characterful, verging on rough when cold. I've lobbed some injector cleaner in and cleaned the MAF and it seems to be smoother after a bit of an Italian tune-up. I should probably clean the throttle body too but that looks ever so slightly more involved. Other niggles include the need to get a set of tires. The ones on these are all mismatched and I've become a right tire fusspot in my old age- I don't think they're doing anything to help the laughable handling. Hence the request for some wheels that would fit it in my wanted thread. It had a nasty wobble at 60-70mph before so I got the front set balanced which definitely improved things- the bloke said that it had a big dent in the front left rim that he hammered out. It's better but still there so maybe I need to get the rears balanced too or just get a new set. I'm off up to Scotland soon so I either need to do the drive in this (I'd happily do it if the wobble was fixed and fuel pump done), Morris (madness) or Saab, as a last hurrah before the ULEZ takes it forever.

  27. Well, she's here. Rougher than a badgers arse! Starts fine, but spits back through the carb when revved. Full service kit ordered. Luckily my mechanic mate grew up on these engines, so he's going to give it a tune on Friday. A quick look underneath shows metal, but unfortunately not much of the wood on top remains not rotten, but I knew this when I bought her. On a plus, she was registered in 82, not 83, so one year less to free tax. Mind you, she will probably still be off the road in 2030, at my rate! Sent from my EML-L29 using Tapatalk

  28. Sonic wasn't with me thankfully and I don't have a scratch on me. It was actually a four car incident! Car one that caused it and car two that was also involved drove off without stopping. Car three that I went into the driver was a bit shook up but his airbag hadn't deployed so it can't have been that bad.

They'll likely provide me with all sorts of fascinating facts on little-known manufacturers with which to enthral* all and sundry. And then this somewhat alarmingly labelled envelope arrived: And within was... Well, blow me down - anonymous fan mail, and an Ulsterbus Coach card model! Crikey. I did once have one of these - I believe I acquired it from the Translink/Ulsterbus stall at a careers fair, c.1995. It lived atop my wardrobe for many happy, if slightly dusty, years - and I've no idea where it went. I'd be genuinely interested to know who my generous mystery benefactor is, and also where on earth they managed to find this treasure. Whoever you are - many thanks! And then, another somewhat bashed-about parcel rocked up: Containing...errr... Initially I thought I'd lucked out with a double bubble delivery of triangular screwdriver bits, but a brief look through my eBay history revealed that I'd ordered two sets very late one night - and then evidently forgotten all about it and ordered another two sets a day or two later. FFS. Then, MrsDC emptied out the bowl of general clutter that's been stewing in the kitchen for months - containing useful* things like solitary sticky fixers, and random screws that I find in the pockets of coats I haven't worn for months - and oh look: My original set of bits wasn't lost at all; it was right under my nose the whole time. *sigh* Anyone want to buy some triangular screwdriver bits? But never mind; there's been some more hot eBay action occuring, and with any luck some interesting items should be touching down by the end of the week. Stay tuned!

I've reinstated the rear wiper as the motor and wiper itself were MIA. @simon8201 has helped me out sourcing a leather steering wheel from a 9-3 to replace the rather worn original. Fingers crossed that'll be swapped tomorrow!

Not entirely horsebollocks related, but a couple of months ago the snowplough over the hill posted on FB that their snowplough had been vandalised - two windows smashed and the fuel tank punctured. I pointed @Mr_Bo11ox at the post and he straightaway volunteered some spare glass he had. With a bit of too-ing and fro-ing @task very kindly picked up the glass when he was on his way up for visit chez_L1 the other week, and we took it along. Despite this being 'baby' bertha, it's a beast. Thanks again to Boll and Task for stepping up to help out a random community service.

  33. Got another coat on this and rubbed it back during the week. Finished rubbing on Friday. Another bit ready for the paint bloke. Before getting stuck in to the engine bay, I thought I'd better try fitting the doors to make sure the arches line up right. The nearside was spot on, but the offside was a bit off. It looks like I put the arch profile a little low at the front of the quarter panel. It was only 2 or 3 mm out, but it would have bugged the hell out of me if I didn't correct it, so that's what I did next. The front of the arch was re-shaped with a little filler, then blocked into the correct shape. When satisfied it all lined up, I splashed a bit of grey primer on it while I get round to re epoxying the quarter panel. Back to the engine bay next.

  35. Started today by spending a large chunk of my ill gotten gains. First I ordered a new Petronix electronic ignition kit for the Sonett closely followed by springs, shocks and turrets for the Disco. Oh well, it is only money. Next was to load up the Enima for the FOD weekend as I collected and have been holding a few* BMW parts for @Six-cylinderbut before I could do that my friend Garry arrived with his welder. A couple of hours later and the Saab looked like this: Wish my welding was that good! Whilst at it, he stuck a patch on the silencer as there are no new ones available in the UK at the moment. The silencer naturally is very thin, but some exhaust paste should see it through the MOT by which time new ones should be about With that done, back to loading the Enima. Just about got it all in, but .... The starter has been temperamental since I got it but now I am planning a long journey and loaded it up, it has got worse! Took about 20 tries before it worked (and being auto a bump start is not an option) but I am going anyway so long as it starts eventually! What is AS life without a bit of uncertainty.......

  36. Okayyyyy, it's actually 99.001K but it's close enough. For some reason the car doesn't measure tenths of a mile which is a shame. I've clocked up a good 4000 fun* filled and exhilerating miles in this car so far and I'll bring it to 100,000 fairly soon. The rocker cover gasket fix has worked incredibly well, so well in fact that no more oil has fallen out of the engine since I topped it up after making the new spacers. I checked it after arriving home and the oil level is still at the full line. Granted, at least a third of that oil is mower grade 10W40, but that's all the 10W40 I had to hand. Gr8 success.
