  1. My old mucker mk2_craig convinced me I should come online and post my latest mental breakdown piece of shite motoring. I've always had a soft spot for the original Renault Twingo, since I first encountered them on a school trip to Normandy in 1993; they had been newly launched and advertised everywhere. A simple thing but I knew I wanted one. It dared to be different in a sea of dull supermini hatchbacks. We know the rest, Renault never did a RHD and before you know it you've been driving 21 years and not owned one. So, when the chance arose this year (Brexit and Global Pandemic) I decided to buy a Twingo. Nothing circulating at the time in the UK so I opted after months of searching AutoScout and The Parking that the sensible thing to do was buy from Europe and ship it back; especially as it would now be customs liable and because travel was banned. I happened on this Methyl Blue 1997 Twingo in a Dutch dealership, some reasonably honest photos and a Google Streetview to suss out the dealer (looks OK) and I find myself buying the Twingo in my best Google Translate Dutch. A bargain at £450 and the dealer can sort export papers if I arrange transport. That proved to be tricker than I first thought, thanks to good old Brexit a lot of European transporters did not want to know; or wanted silly money. A British Car transporter quoted me £600 but after a bit of searching I found a company called Transporting Wheels based in Holland. The very helpful Gerdo emailed back in impecciable English meaning I could leave the Google Translate emails in the deleted folder. He sorted paperwork, arranged with the dealer to have the car collected and transported to Rotterdam. 4 days later it was on a Vessel bound for Purfleet Docks in Essex where I could collect the car. All of this for just shy of £300 customs docs included. After it's arrival, a geezer with a Transit flatbed transported it from Purfleet to Bristol where it was very kindly stored by my employer for a few weeks. Sure I've broken all the rules, never buy a car unseen etc etc, but remarkably nobody ripped me off and everything took place exactly as arranged with the transport. When it arrived, it didn't event appear to be too bad. There is surfact rust in places and it was a little ripe in places underneath, but it starts up and runs around with no obvious issues. It's had a bit of work for the test, which included wiring up an £8 rear fog light to meet UK MOT law. The LHD headlamps were got around with a £7 set of beam deflectors purchased from Eurolites. Two strut top mounts were required as there was a bit of play, and a couple of patches of welding around the rear arch were also required but I'm happy to say it passed an MOT with two minor advisories that can be attended too as running repairs. I've now sent off the paperwork for a V5C to be issued, so I can get UK plates on it and begin using it. It's a November 1996 build, as such it has the DiET engine (D7F 8v) and this one was specified with optional power steering. Comfort Trim level means electric windows, radio cassette, electric adjustable mirrors and full length canvas folding sunroof. From looking at the Dutch equvilent of the HPI, it was registered in January 1997 and had one owner until September 2020. It changed hands again very quickly and wound up at the dealers in January 2021. The 2nd picture taken this week, after successfull MOT test. More info on the process can be found on my blog

I've been looking on all the usual places for something old or interesting and not much has stood out. I went to see a 2002 Suzuki swift at the start of the week but didn't buy it mainly because the bonnet catch was broken and it was being held shut with a cable tie. I spotted this Carina today which has been passed around between a couple of friends, one of them first had it in 2017 so went along and bought it. I do have the original alloys for it which I bought when the previous owner fitted these aftermarket things so will be refitting them when I get some new tyres. It drives a lot better than it did in 2017 although the bodywork is a little crustier. I have someone up in Peterhead interested in the mini so hoping to drop it off and return in the scaab 9000 if I can organise something.

  6. Plugging away with random stuff on the old Acclaim. Bought a knock-off Cibie fog light for £30 on eBay, it's slightly bigger in all dimensions but in person you don't notice. Mostly because it's so much shinier... Did a proof on concept with heat shrink wrap to see if I liked yellow fogs. I didn't. The exhaust rattle was also doing my nut in. Seemingly Mk2 Acclaims (as mine is) have an additional bracket at the downpipe to address issues with excess vibration and stress cracking at the flange (ooh er). Mine has been in the boot ever since I bought the car, so today I had a rummage through my box of random nuts and bolts and lashed it up. Utilising nature's ramps... Bracket. Where bracket go. Bracket go'd. You'll note it's not actually tight, when tight the downpipe blows. It's a cheap steel exhaust from the only supplier that makes them, so likely isn't the most amazing fit. So I backed off the bolts until it stopped blowing with the car running, it certainly seems to rattle less. I shall test it proper on the commute tomorrow. Still to do (in no particular order): Replace radiator Replace rear light seals Reattach door rubbing strips with better tape Mudflaps Work out why the heater fan no longer runs at slow speed Respray the car

Why so much filler? Why?! Panel is a bit crappy in places but overall not horrible. Put a gloss coat on to uniform the panel and see what it looks like. A ripple and two small dents. That and the CB antenna hole. Now the trunk kinda lines up better. Sad. Plan is to remove the inner brace structure, dolly the dents out, replace the inner box and then a small skim of filler in the dimples. Phil

  9. Well actually it doesn’t go from strength to strength.... but the little Peugeot was emptied of what must of been a KG of Bordeaux red dirt, ideal for a grape grower! Not much else has yet happened to get it on the road but it’s going in for an overhaul to get the brakes and running sorted. Found some documents in the sun visors today which gave the last french owners details, bit of google investigation shows that it was last living in Tours despite its Bordeaux 24 plate, belonging to a Madame Besse who was last pottering around in it back in 1997, however she departed in feb this year at a grand 91 years old. That’s all I know other than her husband was a bad hand with a bit of filler and a spray can 😄 Will update again soon!

  16. Following the very sad news earlier today of the untimely passing of valued member Spartacus, we wanted to continue the AS tradition of raising money in memory of Giles. As can be seen, he was a well respected member on Autoshite, always willing to help others and pass on useful information and will be very much missed. Anything we raise will be donated in full to the family via @Mrs Spart or donated directly to a nominated cause as the family wishes. Anything that anyone is able to give will be gratefully received, and we appreciate this even more in the present times. The page we have created can be found HERE

  17. Personally, I'm getting a little rattled that Charlie-boy was seen sniffing round the market only a few miles away today... If he decides to extend the visit so he can nip to St George's on Friday, and then assume that he's got first dibs on the £2 EFE buses and that scratched-up Corgi Pacer due to Royal Prerogative, he'll have to go through me... "...is that really one's best price on the Lone Star Firenza? One is led to believe one can find them cheaper on-line..." "It's fufty quid or nathin', yer Rile Hi'ness... but luk, I'll give ye a wee blue beg til put it in, so I will. How's that?"

Found this in Entertainer I'll have to get the hairdryer on it later Now - I'm not especially into monster trucks, but I do like VWs, and I think a bit of wee came out in Asda when I found this, there just aren't any in the UK it seems. The previous blue version seems to have missed us entirely

  34. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Taking a plate off a car destroys the history of the car, and the plate. It's just an out-of-context series of numbers and letters, and the only people who care about 'private' plates are, to a man, cunts

  40. Today is 3 years since I bough my Morris Minor it turns out! Sadly It's not gotten the attention it deserves over the last year. I had a day off and and a slight upbeat mood this week with the urge to get mine back on the road for a few days this summer. I was missing that feel of a classic thanks to all the classics I saw around Aberdeen on Saturday! @Supernaut also popped round for a chat and generally fettle with the car. So I give it a quick look over, still looks fine enough body & structure wise. Then I set about finally doing a service, just oil, plugs and filter as well as re-assembling bit's I'd taken off. Sadly never got to starting it as the battery was flat, as expected. So hopefully get round to that on Saturday after it's been given a charge. Once done, next will be to try and sort the issue with the indicators, hoping it's something simple such as a relay. As well as that a proper check under as well as play & lube up the nipples (hur hur) and hopefully get some use! But I really should get round to painting it all one colour finally!

  41. A worthwhile jaunt to Tesco, as it turned out.. New singles case had indeed touched down. Nine-packs also available... And a fair few species of five-pack still on the pegs too, at £5 each. Didn't go clean buck daft with the singles, but happy enough with what I came away with. No Capris, as it happens - I did look through the whole dump bin, just in case. Does the MR2 have flip-up headlights? Just noticing that they seem to be raised on the unboxed example that @Split_Pin posted, but they're flush to the bonnet on mine.
