  2. Despite Mercedes' reputation for their 90s cars rusting badly, mine doesn't look too bad: The rust is all hidden. As mine is coming up for needing an MOT test, I thought it wise* to address the sill end corrosion that it has had since the day I bought it. It's a common spot to go on these and is within the prescribed area for corrosion on the MOT, not only for the rear subframe mounts, but also for the rear seatbelts. My Saloon was gone here and had some truly awful patching over it to just barely scrape through another MOT, so I've seen it can be a bit of a pig to do properly. Th

  3. The great 2021 clean has been completed. My quick head count is 199, about the number of real cars I have had and each 1:43 representing a full sized car. The shelve containing the yellow Maestro and above are owned in the past cars. There are also a few random models I have owned for a very long time in the loft and an assortment bag of ply worns donated by Quicksilver under my desk. I am a few short, most notably Rover R8 that I have never seen in 1:43. I need a Bond Equipe convertible that some years ago I saw a white mental kit for but at £120 was too expensive for me. 5. That scene looks like the storyboard for a dramatic episode of Emmerdale. What is the brown thing on the bottom left? Current small scale projects: 1967 Impala that's going to be fitted with the LT5 engine from a Corvette ZR-1. ARG Sandalwood Beige paintwork, which needs polishing. To save putting it back in the box, the donor Corvette is getting built without an engine. Again, just-applied paintwork needs to be polished. Colour is Ford Caymen Blue for an appropriately '90s vibe. I'm also resurrecting this long-stalled project, having recently

  7. It's... Interesting. The engine is revvy and willing, although it hunts a bit at idle. Bit of an oil leak down the front, hopefully only rocker cover gasket. Thermostat a bit iffy, meaning heating is poor. Easy enough to sort. Suspension clatters a lot at the back, needs bushes and/or shock looking at. Occasionally get a clicking from something somewhere, perhaps central locking or something. It wouldn't be and Italian car without a bit of electrical shenanigans now would it? Steering pulls a bit to one side and has a slight wobble, which improved when I put

  9. Finished the Range Rover. I'm pretty pleased with this one, especially the blue and pink stripes, just how I recall them. Since I'm happy I can still make aerials like I was shown all those decades ago, I may have gone a bit overboard with these. I like them though!

  16. Inspired by Mr HubNut's rotor arm... ...how many of us are willing to admit to similarly stupid things they've missed when fault-finding? A couple of years ago I was servicing the Capri. The alternator was failing, and was going to be the next job. So, after having replaced all the service parts (points, plugs, oil, filters etc) and it failed to start, I thought the battery had drained again. I checked (ha) through everything I'd done, then brought the Nissan around to give it a jump... clipped the jump lead to the earth on the engine and wh- oh.... W

  19. Things here are starting to heat up again after the Christmas break. I was able collect my Mercedes parts order from before Christmas. While I'll let a professional do the replacement of the springs in the back I also got my radio aerial gaskets for the back. This is what they are supposed to look like: Turns out I still cannot install mine as a part of one of them is missing, the painted aerial cone usually comes with a rubber ring inside of it, you can't buy it from Mercedes (the cone you can but it would ideally be painted, the gasket isnt a separate part) so I will need to make o

I got rid of Facebook a decade ago because I realised it was terrible for my mental health. I was at Uni and a lot of social events were organised there and only there. Quickly came to the conclusion that my actual friends had my number and would call or text me. And guess what? They did. Sure I'm not always the first to know their news but when they actually do call they have something to talk about... Don't miss it one little bit.

  23. I fear that I'll realise this so-called spares car is in better nick than mine and just shove my engine into that body shell. My latest issue is my exterior door handle on the driver's door only seems to actually unlatch the door about 1 time out of every 10. I opened up the door card the other day and it seems to be activating the latch fine, I just think things need adjusted. In the process though, the boot release button escaped and spat its little internal spring somewhere so now I need to fix that too. In summary: I love it really. The door handle situation is g

Made some progress on the diesel C2 today - the old alternator is now off. I ended up unbolting the aircon compressor (first time I've used the ratchet spanners I bought in the ECP sale last year) to get access to the bottom rear bolt - there was no way in heck I would have got to it otherwise, but with the compressor out of the way I could get to the bolt from underneath. As soon as I started to undo the bolt the alternator flopped down under its own weight, but because I am an idiot it took me about 5 minutes to realise that this meant I could now access the bolt from above, so I spent 5 m

What I'm here to discuss, because I think it's hilarious, is this Corgi Rover SD1 that I definitely didn't buy. "THE PERSON I BOUGHT IT FROM SAID HE BOUGHT IT NEW REMOVED IT FROMTHE BOX TO LOOK AT IT AND PUT IT BACK IN THE BOX AND DID NOT PLAY WITH IT AS HE HAD BOUGHT IT TO COLLECT" So, presumably it was malevolent spirits that went at it wankily with a black permanent marker and added "details": And then fired up the printer to create some bewilderingly toss

The lada continues to sit unloved. I can’t find the bonnet release, although the grille on the bonnet has been prised a bit like someone has had to release it directly via the latch. When things calm down (hopefully not too far ahead) I’ll bang it into my local chod friendly garage and get it recommissioned. In my imagination, there’s a shitefest happening in the future and I’m driving it there......

  29. Mercedes Benz. What images does that throw up? Quality? Prestige? Elegance? Hewn from Granite? This is absolutely none of the above. A very quick intro as to the why: While looking for engines that run well on Veg oil, I discovered the OM606. Turns out this is both the most powerful and just about the last engine available in the UK that uses a mechanical injection pump, and hence is an ideal candidate for SVO. What vehicles were they fitted to.. well, the interesting one is the G-wagon of the late 90's, specifically the G-300TD. They cost HOW FUCKING MUCH??? ok, I'm not get

We had just mopped the floor of all the spilled old oil, made sure everything was clean and tidy, and began to fill up the engine with new oil. We poured 5 litres in with nothing showing on the dipstick. As I went to fetch another can of the stuff, I hear a loud "OH SHIT WE FORGOT THE SUMP PLUG!", rushed over and found 5L of oil now draining down the freshly mopped floor! One £16 more expensive learning curve for the both of us...

Before this can be welded the inner arch had to be rebuilt. there’s all manner of curved bits in here, as the body shape fits around the fuel tank pipes etc. All this I sort of made free hand, as there was little of use / original cut out to template from. there’s one small bit here to finish at the rear edge, and then the outer panels can be repaired, and I can call this side ar

I would have a night out somewhere in Cornwall or Devon and then go into Exeter and Taunton on the way back up to Coventry. I would do this twice a week, ie Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday. On a Wednesday I would do a one-day run to another part of the country. Late in February there were reports that snow was going to be affecting the south west much more than usual, as I believe they usually e
