    The grumpy thread

Not actually a grump but miracle of miracles my VISA arrived about eight hours before I was due to fly. Unbelievable. As a result I now live in New Zealand - I am here now having arrived about two hours ago. Doing two weeks managed isolation in Christchurch, after which I am free to trawl TradeMe and buy some dreadful shite. Heres Cathedral Square, my view for the next fortnight. Nice room, food and drink on tap, can’t complain at all!

  2. 4 days later, I got a delivery that I rushed home from work in my lunch hour to accept - with a helper from work who is also a fan of old chod - what a sight to behold when I arrived: Apart from a very grotty front arch - at first inspection it didn't look too shabby at all! Even underneath was seemingly solid apart from some surface rust. As luck would have it - my friends brother had recently purchased an equally cool ford that was there to help get it jumped: Very nice. Sounds lovely and is luxury inside. Looks well on those wheels too. ANYHOW, the chap

  3. So, having finished welding up the front of the Acclaim last weekend I rolled over to the workshop today with the aim of sorting the rear seatbelt mounting area, ARB mount and possibly starting the rear valance. As the car was jacked up and axle stands applied a conversation occurred. "Eeeeeeeh, this isn't getting an MOT" "How?" "There's a chunk missing out of this chassis leg." "What? How? We mashed the entire lot with hammers last week." "It was there last week, now it's fucking gone." And it was. Our best guess is that our mullering it with hammers disturbe

  5. Hello! I'm glad to say that I was the lucky chap that snagged the transit from @jollyfkr2 that was very kindly offered in this thread: I understand a few people were in line before me but sadly couldn't collect/sort it for varying reasons and it finally came around to me! After sending a picture of a rusty, faded transit van that has been sitting for half a decade to my fiancé at 10AM on a random wet Friday - she promptly replied "Sure" and "I think it could be fun!" (I have no words for how awesome she is!!) Our plan? A self built small camper for fun weekends and advent

I get this too - although my neighbours are strangely supportive, despite being of the curtain twitcher crimestoppers-on-speed-dial generation. When I first started tinkering I got quite defensive and uppity at all the staring until the nice old dear across the street mentioned in passing that she was glad to see these old cars still going and that they weren't going to waste. Another neighbor asked me to look at a warning light on her dash when I had a second. It actually turned out to create some goodwill. Apart from the dick across the fence. 7. That is one of my favourite kits, nicely detailed and it goes together very well. Here's mine from 25+ years ago: Had a good weekend working on the Skyline saloon: Main thing now is the foil trim around the windows, then final assembly. Black trim and bumper painwtwork was done by hand with a brush, no masking tape. There's a family thing with shaky hands, but doesn't seem to be affecting me much yet, just had to be grateful for my new varifocals......

  8. Yet another arrival for the bulging Corgi cabinet this weekend... Mmmm, it's the C403 Chevrolet Superior Ambulance, as seen in the Corgi lineup between 1978 and 1980. Complete with occupant. In he goes. Off to the hospital with you, me bucko. They'll have that aubergine out in two shakes of a lamb's tail. Although obviously based on the Chevrolet panel van, this was a completely different casting with much more detail - the panel van had completely flat sides to facilitate stickers, while this has properly picked out doors and handle

  9. Next step was to get an honest eye on it to see how much work was needed to get it welded up to a roadworthy state. Contacted a friend I have known for a little bit from the car/drift world, who owns & runs Byrneout Welding. Good fabricator, honest guy who would do anything to help you if you were in need. Hugely recommended. He's done a few transits as it happens too. Does good work I can trust. He gave it a good look over for about an hour, getting everywhere, under carpets, underneath, taking off plastic, poking and prodding. He came to the conclusion that - although it d

  11. I swapped the engine on an LDV Pilot once and that nearly finished him. Incidentally, that Pilot was the reason I got banned from the drive. After fitting the engine I fired it up and it emptied nearly the whole sump over the inlaws driveway. The engine was from a pug 405 and I'd neglected to install a blanking plug on the end of the head after the vac pump was moved. My self congratulation over the engine starting rapidly vanished, being replaced with sheer panic. "Dennis! he's done it again, look!"

  13. So another entry from the “I had totally forgotten when and where and why I bought this files” this Vitesse 1/18th beauty appeared back in the summer after a long hibernation. (In my defence the box was always battered but it’s still got its mirrors!) I had a similar 1050cc Golf as my real first car (the FIAT 127 I bought off a painter mate of my dads was sold back to him when its replacement was written off within a few days!) however KPD52W was black with GTI stripes and grill - and couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding 😁 Looked cool though and it’s probably why I bought this

  16. Finished this, today. a £200 Marketplace purchase. Looks a fair bit less 80s/90s now, IMO. I rollered the FG beams and angle iron purlins with Rustoleum Combicolor, replaced the roof, white fascia and RWG and spray painted them in my spare bedroom lol. Here’s some before, during and after pics. Pleased with how it has came out and it will hopefully keep a lot of the weather off the car, until I get around to building a garage.

  21. I was out working in the badlands of West Sussex today when i spotted this absolute honey outside a garage in Horsham. I give you a 70's Spitfire that's been mated with what looks like a early 30's Austin 7. If the rad was moved upright/ pulled in tighter to the engine and below the rad was tidied up then i think this would be way too cool for (old) school.

Hello there. It's come to my attention that I haven't been very active on here since acquiring my latest car, and I thought you lot may like some pictures. Here's my 1993 Kia Pride 1.3 LX, 1 of 26 remaining MK1s, and mine's in the lovely Kingfisher Blue. I came into her through a Facebook car spotting page; the previous owner posted after pulling her out of a garage where she'd been laid up since 2015. An intended spares car for a 121 he had at the time, though he remarked it was far too tidy for such a purpose

  29. Right then, time for a bit of problem solving : It would appear that in order to fit my wheels of choice, some sort of spacer is required. But how big ? Rough calculations guesswork suggests 40mm might be appropriate - let's have a look and see if it will work out I'm sure I could have just done a bit of careful measuring but where's the fun in that when you've got POWATOOLZ No need for a commentary here, enjoy ! So 40mm is ideal, I might even get away with

  31. Mostly underseal and bitumen sound deadening pads, occasionally myself. I suspect due to being so cold things simply freeze and the air is dryer. In the UK on top of the road being salted for no real reason for most of the winter our milder winters tend to be more wet than freezing. Then the rest of the year is also fairly humid and not massively warm. Nothing really dries out, everything rusts, we're an island, lots of sea air. Garbarge. All hail The Cause. Underseal can get fucked. It's shit, lasts a couple of years if you're lucky before it starts cracking/coming awa

Don't get me wrong, I love visiting the place but cars just dissolve. I mean you expect Triumphs to rust but even that Volvo is fucked. I bet they don't even rust like that in Sweden.

Been a while! Not much to report. Sorted the dodgy front bumper, replaced the alternator, ticked over 50k and passed the MOT in August. We've done London, York, the Peak District, Sheffield, Liverpool, Cornwall... Also had a feature in the Retro Cars magazine around February with my friend Jude and his fantastic white 1.3 LX 5 door.

  37. Right- I've now had the V70 over a year and have decided it's a keeper....Despite only having covered 92k it's had a hard life and looks battered. A couple of weekends ago I spotted someone breaking a minted car in the correct colour (Failed autobox).£150 and several trips later I had... 4 17 inch wheels, 2 wings, both front and rear bumpers, all boot carpets and speaker covers, 4 doors and various other sundries. I've got a week off work and much enthusiasm. Lets see how far I can get with my £150 Ovlov Makeover. Today was rear bumper day. My old bumper had this ugly cut-

  38. This arrived last week: Much lighter than the standard one, and feels nicely made. Tidies the rear end up nicely. This had to come out too, with it in it sounded close to standard. It doesn't look like much but makes a big enough difference. It was rivetted in place too - taking a drill to your nice new exhaust is fun......I guess they have to do this to pass type approval? I even made a wee video. I'll do a better one on the bike it it ever stops raining' Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk

Fresh oil, fresh filter, fresh plugs if they're fouled then see where we are. We got our neighbour a free Fiesta that way... someone had put really light weight oil in a Valencia engined Fiesta...it was like water thin. One oil change later the smoke was gone. They got another five years out of it before terminal rot got it. If the rings were that knackered I'd be expecting to see really obvious exce

The only reason I bothered was that 3 years ago , in this very post office I answered an ad that said “ Red BMW car £250” and ended up with a one owner e34 520 which we kept for a year or so before moving on for a nice little tickle.

  45. As alluded to on the News 24 thread, I have managed to find myself another Rover as a daily. I got the call last week, so headed up there yesterday, armed with a jump pack as it had been standing for months. But I needn’t have worried, the seller already had it up and running. I took it for a run, it felt great, so I handed over a small amount of folding and drove away into the sunset in a fine piece of Ronda. So what have I bought? It’s a Rover 620 SI manual in Old Giffer Gold. It’s done 98k and has a reassuringly large amount of service history, old MoTs etc and two service books w
