  1. How to start a New Year. Meet a Shiter you haven't met before. Relieve him of his car, that's out of MoT and been standing for months. Drive it 40 miles home and leave it at a nearby garage for major work that I can't do myself. The Shiter in question is Hillman Imp, and the car is the red Jaguar XJ8 Sport that he recently offered at no charge. Well you can't turn that down, can you? Handover accomplished, on neutral ground. Note the registration, that cued up the car's new name: Hairy Pussy. If that doesn't suit a Sport-oriented Jaguar, what does? So now that I've taken possession... Yes, the Woollard shot. Has to be done. No fuelling shot, because it didn't need any. I've now dropped it at a nearby garage where the welding work will take place, and probably a couple of other small jobs it might need for MoT. Updates to follow. Meanwhile, since I drove it back to Barrow, I can say it's a lovely car. Yes, there are things that need doing, but it's pretty much plug-n-play. Have a couple of snaps from my end of the journey.

  4. As some may of seen in my other thread, I became the owner of a 1988 Fiat Croma I.E Super today, my first venture into old cars after passing my test in October! 32,000 miles from new, even have the original bill of sale for £8995! Needs some attention before I can start using it, most noticeably a lumpy idle, cut out on me a couple of times on the way home. Everything seems to work alright apart from the speedo which just jumps up and down at will and I’m pretty sure the steering is a lot heavier than it’s supposed to be so that’ll need looking at. I’m not to knowledgeable mechanically so I’m sure this’ll be a great learning curve*. As a side note anyone in the North East know any garages/mechanics that are knowledgeable on old shite. I’ve spoken to the Italian specialist in Ouseburn about the speedo and he was quite helpful but more than likely quite expensive going off his usual clientele of classic Alfa owners. I’m sure some of you here will appreciate the pix!

  5. That has gotta be the most unimaginative title in the known universe, but it's all i got! This thread is to document the adventures, and lets be honest misadventures of me and my vehicles, the main focus of this thread is to document my Range rover P38 i bought at the not so idiotic age of 17 from a chap in Worcestershire. Pics are few and far between. Originally I passed my test and my Dad wanted me to buy something small and economical, i left the house telling everyone I was going out to view a citroen Saxo VTS, And rocked up with this a few hours later! My Parent IE my Dad was speachless and the rest of 'em. Well either laughed with pity or walked away!! It went haywire when I told them it was a 4.6 Vogue with LPG ? Spec wise. Vogue specification Wood/leather steering wheel 16ish way seats with 2 person memory + heaters Harman Karden sound system Satnag 4spd Auto with sport mode "chortle" 18" Comet alloys Monte Carlo Blue Air suspension Climate pack - heaterd front and rear windows. And a few other odds and ends . The standard practice after buying such a car is to start driving it hard and long distance Daily.. Of course it got covered in shit from all the country lane jaunts, My Main love of cars comes from fixing them and cleanin' 'em myself, as such the old girl had to look her best, As odd and knobby as it sounds I do get rather nerdy when it comes to cleanin' Washmitts and speshul buckets anorl!! And thats it for an into! More later when i can find and correctly post regarding pics H

  6. Quoted for truth. I met this beast today. Credit to Mr @sdkrc 'cause this thing is ace. Interior and exterior are gloriously patinated from a mixture of Arizona sun and a small interior fire, the massive V8 pulls it along quite nicely and the autobox goes through gears smoothly aside from the jump into D or R from neutral. On reflection this may be because it is currently idling at about 1,100rpm which is probably faster than the 'box is designed for. This is the first Yank motor I've driven and only the second left hooker (The first being @320touring's GSA), steering is effortless, torque is endless although it handles like a small yacht and the brakes require some thinking ahead as it's tiny drums all around. Once you adapt to it though it really does go nicely. Other bonus points - Heater doesn't work so, no desmisting but a squeegee on the front window works fine + it's an excuse to open the pillarless windows. The bits of the interior that haven't been baked in the Arizona sun have been on fire, characterful as fuck. Sounds fucking amazing. Quarterlights open with their own handle - Posh as fuck. Remote mirror adjust - Posh as fuck. Lap belts to chop you in half in the event of an accident. Gets an mpg figure. Seems to have been painted cream at some point and then changed back to the original colour. Leaves a trail of lacquer in it's wake. Hubcaps detach while on the move for pedestrian slicing action. Is exactly the correct length for a McDonald's parking space + about 3ft. 11/10 top shitting - would daily in the summertime.

  9. You know when you think you have had a quiet year ... then you look back through the threads .... well Big Green Bastard - one of the longest term cars on the fleet mainly cause Northern Monkey wouldnt let me kill it. A free car that I lost money on. It survives and now lives with Clayts AVO failed MOT spectacularly on rust so was stripped and used to make others go faster This 406 gave up the ghost when the fuel pump started to play silly buggers. I had just filled it with fuel and we were supposed to be off to Scotland. Literally started cutting out and so was dumped at home before using another car. Went off to the scrap man. I cant quite remember where I got it from I got a lancer to replace it which was an AS bike and collected from Scotland. Really nice car if a bit rusty underneath. Thought the tyres on it were shit, till I found out the rear calipers werent working! Changed to new calipers and all was good. It went to Northern Monkey in a convoluted swap including a Mondeo and Golf Mondeo TDCI (no Pics) - Got from Northern Monkey, took it back the next day as the DMF was rattling its tits off! Swapped back and ended up with the golf Golf - My brothers car and a really nice one. DMF had utterly failed so did a collection via breakdown people who kindly shipped it home for me and gave me a hire car. New clutch and DMF were fitted by NM motors before some car swappage. Ended up running it for a few months but not being an estate wasnt very useful with dogs. Sold to a lovely couple via autotrader. Golf TDI This SMART was offered up for mega cheapz on AS so I snapped it up with a Bucketeer delivery service bringing it from the far south up to Accrington. Has had some odd electrical fobiles, but currently sits on brand new tyres and freshly serviced. Getz then was surplus to requirements - Sold to the shadow. I think I sold this way too cheaply but as I had got a good deal on the SMART didnt mind too much. This little pug was under threat of being scrapped and so it was saved. Loads of issues with it, all improved with having a cherry bomb exhaust. Lent to Bucketeer for a month or so, who fell in love with it. Ended up going to Lacquer Peel, then many other Shiters - Now living in Saabnuts home for unloved cars. AVO was replaced with BAL another 1.6 Mx5 - bought from Mitisigma on the day of the MOT running out. It came with a water leak which seemed to fix itself on way home. Bits were swapped over from AVO and MOT obtained with just wiper blades needed. It was swapped with Bucketeer for a volvo estate as needed a dog wagon and had bought its replacement Its replacement was another red MX5 this time with a turbo strapped to it. Purchased from Fatpirate, it is an absolute loon of a car. I love it and dont want it to ever go anywhere. Will need to start work on the snagging list of jobs including inlet manifold. As mentioned above volvo 850 estate - swapped with Bucketeer for BAL. Becomes a dog wagon for new mutleys. Winter tyres stuck on it and it just works. Boring though so instead bought a turbo v70 v70 turbo bought from Ohdearme for scrap money - the intent was to do it up but then Northern Monkey hatched a plan over a coffee for a multple swappage car deal. (more of which later) Then I won a micra in a roffle -I love little K11s and a 1.0 is one of the best in my eyes. This is a real keeper I then bought BAL back and swapped BAL and Turbo Volvo for a Saab Aero estate with Northern Monkey - although that should be marked as pending! So the year ended with the following fleet Nissan Micra Turbo Mx5 Volvo 850 Estate SMART Saab Aero (ish) Plan this year is to sell the 850, MOT Aero and get it on the road. Fix niggles on mx5 Turbo, drive the micra lots.

  10. Internet connected today, woohoo! New house is proving a lot of work, in a good way. In addition to the electrical tape waste pipe in the kitchen, the one under the bathroom basin is 'repaired' with brown parcel tape which also, astonishingly, doesn't leak. House move went surprisingly smoothly, except for a puncture on the hire van a few miles after setting off. Happily, the hire company replaced the flat tyre free of charge and the rest of the drive was uneventful. In fact, of all the house moves I've done over the years this was by far the smoothest of the lot, and not just because I was wafting along in a BX. Interestingly, the starting problem the BX had vanished after the long run. The starting issue was bad again a couple of days ago but has once again vanished, so I really don't know what's causing it. Either way, 300 miles of motorway slog seems to have mostly sorted it. Scariness of trying out a new MoT garage - I've got a good shortlist of recommendations thanks to a post elsewhere on the forum - later this month though, realistically, I can't imagine what would cause issues at test since I've not done that many miles since the last one and honestly, the car has been really well behaved. So yeah, I'm now in Kent and it feels weirdly like being on holiday. Princess will be arriving later this month, I hope, all depends on cost and who I can get to bring it down here for that one.

  12. Heater works. Its the button above the radio. I was using it this morning as it was a wee bit nippy. Nice to meet you Eddy. Hope the car serves you well. Happy it should have a new lease of life. Had a great drive over to meet you too, its a fantastic car to drive. Will miss it but prefer someone using it instead of it just sitting there rotting until I never get round to it. I dropped the Porsche off where the Jag lived yesterday and got a photo. Porsche is there for a bit but I'll probably bring it back tomorrow and the Legacy will be back on the road outside my house after a brief moment on the drive. Hopefully the welding isn't too painful. I'll try and remember how I got the radio code last time. Like I say John K might be able to help.

  17. Years ago I used to feel obliged to go to pubs and new years eve parties etc etc. Now I'm older I don't even have to make excuses. This was my party, in a talbot in a field in the middle of nowhere. I kind of wanted to stay up and watch some fireworks off a hill or something, but I fell asleep at about 10:30. I think I outlasted the mrs and both dogs by at least two episodes of Bottom.

  18. Then I took it to my folks place and gave it a good wash, slurmed some polish on it and gave the bumpers a coat of linseed oil. It looks OK for a 28 year old car. While I was there I had a quick look at the exhaust which has started blowing, it's the down pipe/first box, so that'll be the next job to do.

  20. To me the Autoshite ethos seems two-fold: keeping interesting older vehicles on the road, and helping/encouraging others to do the same. Why have that shiny PCP’d Fiat 500 on the drive when for less than a bag of sand you could have a crusty Jag or some such. On AS There’s the bangernomics side of things (keeping older white goods type cars on the road well beyond it being socially acceptable) and the love of the quirky and unloved. Many people run a modern and an unloved gem or 7, many people just run the bangernomics type vehicles. Some heroes daily drive the weird and wonderful everyday. For me your Focus holds no particular interest. But the beauty of AS is that others will do. I mean FakeConcern wants to see pictures!! But I will warn you... when I signed up to AS I had one car, it was nearly new and fairly dull (a BMW 1-Series) I now own 6 cars, the newest of which is 22 years old and I recently bought a non-running Yugo just because... why not. Best thing to do is get stuck in. It’s a fantastic community. Join in, go to events meet people. I’ve yet to meet a Shiter who’s a complete knob. And some Shiters I’m now lucky enough to count as friends. Anyway it’s 1.48am, I can’t sleep and I’m getting soppy now... I’d best go off and bid blind on some festering heap on eBay...

  22. For some it’s a way of life, for some just a bad habit. A few have elevated autoshite to performance art and there’s one or two who I think are just doing it for a bet, or maybe a condition of their parole. Autoshite is cars (and vans or trucks, even bikes if you’re strange) that people down the pub or Jeremy Clarkson fans say is crap. A shite car was probably never cool, but if it once was then either it’s gone utterly out of fashion or it’s in such an unappealing spec or condition that someone says that the council must come and take it away, and everyone on Mumsnet agrees. Rarity due to apathy is also a hallmark of shite. None of these are rules, just my observations after ten years here. We don’t really like rules, except maybe ‘don’t be a git’. Generosity, integrity, real knowledge, wit and swearing are valued and widespread; arrogance, belligerence and dishonesty are not. Welcome along, anyhow. None of us is really comfortable with eye contact, by the way.

  23. In the 'end of year tat accounts' thread, I made mention of a 420GSi arriving on the scene (quite unexpectedly I might add). So with nothing much else happening this new year's afternoon, I'll make an introduction... Anoraks will note the fog lamps indicate this is a Turbo, and the Coventry registration means that it was also a Rover Group Company Vehicles car when new (27th August 1993). I do wonder if anyone ever actually ordered one of these at their Rover dealer, or did all 300 of them have a year with Rover, helping to make the price a bit more down to earth for the first proper owner? ? That aside, the first 'proper' owner was Barry - who lives in Eltham - and he took the car on in July 1994, pootling about with it right up until November 2019. Impressive! (Barry has replaced his 420 with a brand new Astra GTC). He wanted a good home for his Rover after all those years, and through various channels we were put in touch. Now, I wasn't really after another car, but some things you really can't pass up. It did mean moving on my Daewoo Espero (happily, now back on the road with its new owner!). A charitable donation was made for the car, and a day out to London planned, which went without a hitch. The drive home was exciting; you can drive it sedately and exactly how you would expect an old Rover to drive - in full-on 'grandad' mode - and it is a comfortable and relaxed thing. Put your foot on the accelerator though - in any gear, it doesn't matter, the response is the same - you are thrown forward with surprising speed. Crazy stuff! The next week or so saw the car get some regular use to allow us to figure out just what we'd bought. The plus points are that it's quite possibly the only surviving unmolested 420 Turbo, it's all complete with everything working and it comes with twenty five years worth of bills and paperwork. The downsides are that despite Barry's admirable and generous spending on it over the years, it's not really been 'looked after' (if that makes sense). It's hardly been washed, the inside is a health hazard, and all the muck in the back arches means it'll require a date with the welder in the next year. Still, it has an MoT until August 2020 and is in fine mechanical form. So, what next? The first job made itself known quite quickly; It had spent all its life being parked on a steep driveway, pointing up hill. It now lives on a flat driveway in a part of the world that is nearly always raining, thus it's now soaked inside. Actually with the amount of water in the rear seat base and under the carpets, it has been leaking for some considerable time. It has just become more obvious now. So out came the headlining and in went the dehumidifier! It's taken a few days to clear the condensation from the roof panel, and thankfully the weather has been dry. I've taken the opportunity to cut some new gaskets for the rear lamp units, so I've eliminated one known water ingress point. Things are dry enough inside the car now to pinpoint the exact points where the water is coming in the next time we get some rain. Sunroof is an obvious suspect, and also the top of the rear screen due to the corrosion there. There's also a lot of silicone sealant around the top of the front screen, which is unsightly but must be doing something to help currently. So the current state of play; I've got some black tape stuck across the top of the rear screen to try and keep the worst of the rain out. The dehumidifier is still doing it's thing, filling up every second day! I await further rain so I can investigate the sunroof some more. Either the seal against the roof panel or the drain tubes, I reckon. Medium term plans are to clean up the interior and get some mechanical work done such as cam belt, water pump and a general service. Hopefully we can keep the worst of the weather out and be able to enjoy taking it to a few shows when the spring and summer arrive. There's an Astra in bits in the garage at the moment, so there's now some impetus to get that project completed so that the 420 can take its place later this year. In many ways the fact that it has come with such a long MoT takes the pressure off a bit, and I don't feel that I've just added an unusable wreck to the fleet. It'll be nice to show it off in its 'as found' state!

  27. around a week after doing this job she started to have oil pressure issues, the light would flicker, and there was a knock emerging from the bottom end, at this point I was getting a bit pissed off with this V8 ? The Sump on one of these is relatively easy to remove, there is a video somewhere! Anyway mine was fulled off. There was a fair bit of white metal debris in the sump, which is never good, I had the option of pulling the crank or doing a bearing roll. I decided the latter as it was easier! The old bearings. They were a bit destroyed, The new ones were rolled in and the caps re-torqued. Sump glued back on and some Valvoline VR1 20w50 added as her first meal with new bearings. Much quieter and the oil pressure is much better, 45 pounds at idle IIRC. Cosmetic details.. -------------- After doing this I needed to do an easy job for a change, and giving the engine a spruce up was an obvious option.. Before The plastics were treated with Autoglym vinyl and rubber care, The manifold was repainted and some conduit to freshen up the bay was added Makes it look a tad nicer under there.

  31. The Driving.. Up until this point she hadn't run, thanks to the fuc'd computer for around 1 and a bit years. Having the luck i do with this thing, the obvious choice would of been to be careful and take precautions. so i went out and put 20litres of fuel in it. Put my foot to the floor and turned the key, she fired up instantly blew all kinds of shit out the exhaust and then settled down to the usual Rover V8 rumble after the tappets pumped up.. Well happy My Family has a fair few lanes around the property, so i took her out for a shakedown run, Initial impressions were good, the old ZF auto was stuck in 1st and wouldn't change up, probably due to being sat for a long time and having prehistoric fluid in it, a good foot to the matt and some manual selection soon got her shifting.. So impressions are good, she shifts and stops.. Fuel economy is shocking Offroad prowess seems unscathed Currrently i'm happy with how it is running, she still needs alot of work but mechanically it is feeling better, More havoc to come.. H

  32. Welding, mostly. There's a big strip need doing along the OS sill/floor interface. After that: there's a rubbing noise that suggests a rear brake isn't properly releasing. There's no code for the radio (at the moment) which means no heater too. Both front wings really want replacing. Further ahead, maybe some tyres would be a good thing, they don't have quite as much tread as I would like. There are some other fiddly bits too but they can wait. But, for the price, I'm not complaining! I got a very good deal, whatever it costs to get through MoT. I'm going to make sure I enjoy this one.

  38. Today made a quick run over to the Vintage Stoney New Year's Day show. Didn't take a huge number of photos, nor did I stay a huge amount of time as the cold was cutting straight through me today and I could feel my back seizing up while I was walking around. Yes, as a camper owner I was immediately drawn to this. I like the old Renault Traffic...though from memory the Merc T1 is vastly superior to drive (I'm quite willing to retract that statement after another shot of one as it was 2001 when I last drove one). Of course then a Citroen was next up. Shame the UK spec GS didn't get the proper dash. Lovely little Triumph. Very attractively coloured little MGB. Always think of these as far more modern invention...Seeing one on an E plate makes me feel bloody old. Now *that* is a bodykit... Gorgeous. For all folks seem to like to hate on the front engined ones...it's a Ferrari... This thing gets the car of the day award for me...have a huge soft spot for Bugattis from this era...never mind when they're as honest as this. Actually remembered to take a few snaps of my own car. Have a history of forgetting to do that! Given she's shortly going off to a new home I was glad to have the opportunity to take the Lada out to one last show as I didn't get her out to any last year as I was feeling a bit disgruntled with the car, so nice to end on a high note so to speak. I couldn't help but find myself mentally playing the Miami Vice theme in my head seeing this thing... Lovely pair of Cavaliers. Two countries approach to what's essentially the same car... I'd happily own either. These colours would do just fine too. This sounded lovely as you'd expect. Possibly the most downright unexpected thing to find there. Friend of mine back up north had a silver one of these for a while and I remember two things. Ridiculously comfy seats and that it went like a bloody rocket. Weird switchgear too. The Road Runner is probably the American car I've got the biggest want for...even if this one is the wrong colour. Got to be the metallic blue with the black striped bonnet for me. First car I ever drifted. Entirely unintentionally. Especially on Haudagin Roundabout in rush hour. Finally know where that little warning light strip came from! Found an identical one on the ground in a scrap yard decades ago...now I know it came from a Mk II Transit.

Just a few to add from October up to the year end. Hanging yet wonderful in Stow-on-the-Wold. This pair were also in the Cotswolds. Piss wet in Pimlico. I got soaked that day. Could've done with a brolly, but a fairly decent haul was had. On the M20, London bound. Italy or Bust it says on the back. Fair play to them. A stickered up yellow modern Mini was following as back up, but still. They made it home. Ripple effect on the bottom, pop rivets elsewhere. A++. Brixton spots to finish. OK it was being used in a poncy context, but still good to see it. I ran to get this. I must've looked a right nutter. Immaculate low miler. Shame they'll have sell it, or stump up for the ULEZ. Appalling photo, but no question over what it is. Interesting* fact. A CX GTi lives 100 yards away from this shot, in that block of flats. Same road. Some pop ups to finish.

  44. Here you go, I found it. I think Junkman did something similar (later, I might add) but his had a big red line at 1986. It’s just one perspective, it’s all up for discussion — and one we have fairly regularly, e.g. here:

  46. Just back from a spontaneous outing in the mini. My neighbour “Mick the Bus” called to ask if I knew about it; I had no idea but it turned out to be a very enjoyable meet indeed. From what I gather, the New Years Day meeting at Barrington dates back to the 70s. When the organiser retired, nobody took over but people kept coming anyway. That story is probably a parable and could be applied to all sorts of things that people think need moderating and organising, but whatever (!) It was a really eclectic mix. Not classics but some vintage stuff, some classic, some retro and some interesting moderns too. It was super relaxed and a brilliant atmosphere. I’d intended to take the Sierra but the battery just laughed at me - so we went in Nan’s mini instead. The red one arrived mid photo. Alpine badged. My favoured garage have just finished repairing a GTfour for a customer. I think they’re the bomb. As I say, all were welcome. Aye - the fabled 260 V8. I loved seeing this little babe arrive. Cute as a button. The owner of this collared me and we got talking. He seemed mostly disinterested in the bASe but a nice fella. Has had it for about 30 years, done a lot of work himself and it’s just ticked around to 260k. Here’s Mick the Bus turning up! Quite an interesting story with this little Truck. It’s an Auto Union. Nope, me neither. However it turns out that they would, in time, become Audi. It seems popular around these parts to dislike MK2 Escorts, but I fucking love them. A friend at school inherited a brown MK2 in about 1999 and he was utterly ashamed of it. He’d park around the corner from college and refuse to be seen in it at times! I reckon he’d love one now! NOTREDSHOCKER I couldn’t believe it. Tried explaining how important this car was to blokes of my age when we were kids. Wife looked apathetic and a bit confused. That Morris was gorgeous. The best colour (just ahead of Trafalgar Blue) and with a beautiful purple vinyl interior. Devine. Mk1 Madness. Note in the screen identified it at as a 1959 example. And that was that. Well, nearly. Just as we were about to leave we spotted a late arrival. FUCK YES. Sexual. We should do a club stand next year. After all, if someone can take their Ferrari Testarossa out in January - you can dust down your old heap! I did ?
