Lancashire scrap yard (image heavy, low quality)

Welcome. I browse your pictures on Flickr. That looks like the yard under the M62 at Winwick near Warrington, Wades I think? He's been there more than 30 years and there is always some old stuff, Mk1 Cortinas and Corsairs were my targets. That is the yard that I got kicked off when I asked could I use my camera.

The camera is okay, but not great. limited control and for my hi-res photos, taking pictures quickly... i can take two, and then it has to clear the buffer. I long fo rone that can shoot hi-res of several frames. That's why i went for the video option on the return trip, but they're out of focus. You've got good eyes though!

I travel from Preston to North Somerset very regularly along the WCML. Always looking for the scrap yards and derelict buildings along the way!

edit after monza's post

Yep, it's that yard. I only know it as being two minutes train ride before / after Warrington Bank Quay. I don't drive yet so I don't know roads and motorways :(

Doesn't sound positive if they kicked you out for wanting photos. My personality means I'd probably squirm in front of a telephone and eventually call them and ask in advance, and say that if they dont wish the photos to be on the Internet, then they wont be. Not sure if that'd have more chance of success.

Wow. Is this place still trading? Traditional scrappys like this are hard to find anywhere now, the only other two I know of like this are in St Helens (not too far from here).Let's hope Gormless Brown's team of 'Green Dreamers' aren't able to close those, otherwise that just leaves us with main dealer or Hills in Skelmersdale :x . This brings me to a question: Since when did car breakers start charging VAT??

Can't answer your VAT question but the photos were taken in May 2008, and the yard seemed to be open. I've seen activity and movement of stock there but I get about 3 or 4 seconds at the most to see it.Would love to know where the other scrappies like this are in Lancashire. There used to be two in Preston but they seem to have been closed, and i have pics from a Chorley scrapyard shortly before that was cleared... will upload those another time if I remember!

The two at the end of Kent St are still very much alive and kicking, though one has gone all "waste metal recycling merchant" and wont let you forage by yourself. There are two in St Anne's near Queensway (one specialises in BL & Rover rubbish) and one at the back of B&Q in Chorley, there is a bike breakers in Chorley too (as well as A1 in Preston).

The yard is open. It's called Wades and is in Winwick, between Newton le Willows and Warrington. 'Mallys' in Haydock St Helens has some old stuff. It's behind the Huntsman pub on the A58.

Mally's (or G&E Carbreakers to non regulars) is, I think, the ONLY traditional scrappy around here. I've been going there since I had to replace a front headlamp on my Chevette 17 years ago (cost me £5 as opposed to £90 at Vauxhall) and it has changed little since then 8) . Well worth a visit :D .The other one is Atlas Salvage near Fingerpost. They are a little more 'EU friendly' (as in they put a lot of stuff on the shelf) than Mally's but you can still wander round it if the need takes you... How do you get to Wades and will they let you wander??

There was a big yard in Adlington that was good though I am going back a few years. Also in the area, theres a couple near Accrington and a big, traditional scrap yard near Barnoldswick thats well worth a visit.
