"I have in my hand a piece of paper..." - yup, the 406 now has 12 months' ticket. I was like an expectant father in that MOT bay, I tell thee...

 

OK, so eGay appears to be full of idiots nowadays, especially now you can't leave negative feedback to a buyer - one wonders where is the best place to sell? RR - cue comments of "if you were 7" closer to me I'd have that M8"; Autotrader - nothing similar available for less than £475 within 100 miles of me; Freeads?

 

Car stands me at £354 all told, so do the assembled sages of the board reckon that £395 is too much to ask for a clean (well, it will be valeted to RW standards tomorrow!), fully-serviced P-plate 406TD with a full years' ticket, working e/sunroof and windows, that can run on the all-important veg oil? Downsides are erratic c/l; radio needs a code; 230k miles; not much in the way of history.

£395 for a diesel donk with 12 months test - bargaintastic, Without road tax that = £33 / month for the car - cheaper than the train I tell ye.If you were so much closer to me M8 etc etc etc :twisted:

Good selling point that - used it before, may use it again! It's even stopped crunching in 2nd and 3rd gears so maybe the linkages have dropped back into the correct place...

That's almost cheap enough for me to consider buying it for the engine (to bung in the ambulance, mated to an LDV Pilot gearbox and propshaft) and then weighing in the rest - with the knackered Perkins Prima and Sherpa box out of the ambulance stuffed in the boot it'd weigh in for around 300 quid at the minute. Don't think I'd get round to doing it any time soon though...

Should be easy to sort this particular fault. Plenty of downloadable code-breaker programs available from a quick Googling - the calculator for Ford M series stereos is particularly good - failing that, quote the serial number on the relevant forum and you should get the correct answer in no time at all.Edit - Re. the mileage - Can't you clock it and state "replacement odometer fitted, previous reading unknown" ?? (Prob not now that you have a test cert...)

Yes Reg, I was impressed with your foresight!No problem with using AT, in fact probably the preferred route as mine would be cheapest. I've had some success at the bottom end of the market on AT a while back, sold a Rover 220SD with a year's ticket (164k miles) for £600 and the phone was white-hot!

I'd go in high at £650, and drop the price a few days later if no-one calls. You would be suprised with the trader a few months ago I knocked out a (admittedly spotless) Grand Voyager 3.3 with 174k on it for £1400 :shock: With only 5 months ticket - all down to presentation, the buyer was fed up looking at shite. Go in above £500 at the very least :wink:

What's your local rag like?Our local paper has NOTHING under £500, ever, I assume it all either gets ebayed or fragged instantly. Ergo a sub-£500-er is likely to be snapped up quick.Also, can you put 6 months rent in the window and bump he price up?This means that your car is far more desirable to the utter dregs of society who run without insurance or licenses. I wager that the rent would have a queue of polish builders and methadone users round the block begging for it. OK, so not moral but easier to shift.

Think I'll go in at £495 to (just) break the psychological £500 barrier.Mk2_Craig - unfortunately I can't change the mileage as (a) it's electronic and (B) the sparse service history, apart from my own receipts, is made up of the last 3 MOTs from the MOT website...each with the mileage on!Just got the stereo working too - add another £8.99 to the total! (Couldn't find a free one)

No problem with using AT, in fact probably the preferred route as mine would be cheapest.
Oh right that makes sense. When reading this, I was confused as to why it appeared to be amongst a list of negative options!

Car's not continuosly insured Pog, so can't put rent on it, unfortunately - too much faff/expense to add to my existing policies in admin fees, and by the time ASKMID updates if you go the Tempcover route, that itself gets pricey. Used Tempcover today to get it to MOT centre and back, using prebook Road Traffic Act loophole.It's on SORN at the moment and any purchaser will sign in blood, in duplicate, a receipt which states the time of sale so hopefully I don't get in schtuck with DVLA.Will look at the local rag, but think it's quite pricey to advertise. I fancy Adtrader/Freeads and Gumtree Reading as a starting point, then move on to Autotrader for the Bank Holiday weekend if it hasn't gone before then.

£495 is it`s mark. £395 would be too cheap, definately. Dewsbury is the cheap car capital of Yorkshire, which in turn is one of the cheap car capitals of the country, and there`s some right unappealing stuff with short test being £395`d by really untrustworthy roadside traders at the moment, your 406 would be a peach by comparison and wouldn`t last five seconds round here at £495.

I got the tracking done before it went in - best £20 I've spent for a long time. It was toeing in a total of 13mm ( :shock: ) on the front - I had to change the nearside front wheel & tyre as it was completely worn away on the outer 1/3, the rim was dented to fook as well. So I had a fun morning at the local scrapper, filling my pockets with trim bits from a P-reg petrol auto 406 (just came in but tax expired in 2004!) plus a toolkit wheelbrace and two wheels with good tyres (as the spare had a puncture) for £50.That said, from the initial purchase price of £140, it's quite amazing how the costs mount up - owner's manual and Haynes BoL £15; oil, fuel and air filters £16; oil £18; coolant £13; thermostat, gasket and K-Seal £23; new wheels and tyres £50; tracking £20; radio code £9 and finally a rattle can of paint for £3. Plus a couple of Saturday's labour on my part. I've done cheaper cars with a full ticket (Rover 420 set me back £240 all in as I recall), but this should be more desirable...It's got a few advisories but nothing major - slight play in the nearside track rod (see above, must have taken a hell of a hit on a kerb at speed or summat); front discs low (this I knew); brake pipes beginning to corrode; chip in the 'screen; and an oil leak (rocker cover gasket probably). But the tester - firm but fair, like the Moscow police - reckoned it wasn't too bad, especially for the mileage. He told me he'd seen some real horror stories recently, 3 Fezzas this week with terminal chassis rot. Good job Pugs don't rust, innit?Will let you all know the score close of play tomorrow (with ad links) plus piccies of it all nice and shiny, I know you all love the results of my OCD car cleaning activities...! I've got the glowplugs to do as well - anyone know a way of changing no. 4 (next to the cambelt) without removing all the skin from your hand???

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAR! :twisted: What you need is a cranked ring spanner, GSF sell one for the job - otherwise wait till the Circus hits town and bung the resident contortionist a fiver to change it. Plenty of penetrating oil before hand is also a good move.I actually bottled out of doing this on my mates pug and just changed the other three as I figured it would still start on three.

Huh. Everyone says that. I bottled the last two as well, but can't be arsed to spend any more money, so I'm going for it...Had a Draper deeply cranked offset 12mm ring spanner delivered earlier in the week, so let's see if that's any better than the "chocolate teapot" dedicated 8/12mm glowplug spanner I bought previously.

I changed three glowplugs on my Iveco Daily recovery truck a couple of years back and it started fine. The fourth required (from what I could see and without using specialist tools) the removal of the injector pump, so I decided to leave that one. I'd actually sold it on eBay by then - I advertised it as being awkward to start as it'd been started on Easystart for so long by its previous keepers that I thought new glowplugs might not be enough to get it going on the button again, but they were. The auction had ended by the time I got round to fitting them though so I couldn't update the listing with the truck's new on-the-button status, and it only made £450. Still, the buyer was over the moon. :roll:

The 4th plug on the 406 is virtually impossible to get at - so I did 1, 2 and 3; mainly because I only had 3 new plugs, but also because I am chicken.

 

It's still a bit smokey on startup but settles down OK. It cleaned up pretty well, but there are a few issues like strange triangles of slightly-mismatched paint on the leading edge of the bonnet, where some idiot has evidently tried to blow in the stonechips. My £3.49 can of Regency Red, on the other hand, is pretty much bob-on - but would look shit if I did the whole bonnet with it :lol:

Going to go with Autotrader (£9.99 for two weeks, web only) as it's now £4/week with Adtrader; used to be free!

Everyone sings the praises of that Autotrader site, yet I've had 0% sales success off it. Admittedly I am using it for the first time though....... that said I have boshed a motor up there at more than a grand under book price, and not so much as a sniff in two weeks. And that's for something that should be very saleable right now.

Well let's not get too excited, although it is the cheapest diesel 406 on there (and the cheapest one with a year's ticket regardless of engine type)...within 30 minutes of the ad going live I got a call from an Asian fella asking me "is it too much mileage" (er, no - 'cos it's still running), "is it good stereo" (err...it's the factory jobbie, what do you want to listen to? Ace Of Bass or Mantovani?) and finally "what is your best price?" - the old classic. When I informed him the price was stated in the ad he said "I will think about it". Tomorrow might be a better day though...
