Chris_W_Q4
Check out this beautiful Maxeeeema I've spotted on Autotrader with 19,000 miles resplendent in gold...I'd love to LPG it and quickly put 100k miles on it before it rots to death!http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/ww ... x_mileage=
Ratdat
Blimey, I'd love to buy that, they're getting pretty rare now. It'll have at least another 30k in it before the autobox packs in.
carlo
They had particularly fragile boxes didn't they rd, seem to recall the exhaust manifold causing problems as well. I had one about 4 years ago and the lasting impression is of the sheer effortless power of the thing, it was like the proverbial steamtrain. That and a brilliant sound sytem too.Would certainly like another go one day.
Spottedlaurel
That auto box issue seems to haunt most of the big FWD Japanese cars, V6 ones anyway.
mk2_craig
Are these the ones that invariably seem to have been pre-registered by Nissan as "demonstrators" ?
Marty
There is an N registered QX (ex Fred Coupe Nissan MD car) up for grabs near me that seems unbelevably cheap at £200 - short test and tax, but surely worth more broken for bits? What are these like then? Its either maroon or brown - it was dark and I couldnt make up my mind under the sodium lamps - not black though, which kind of rules it out as a pimpmobile. Ratdat
I wouldn't allow it being a Nissan dealer MD's car to cloud your judgement. My local dealers MD had one and it was a pile of turd. It always looked unwashed and utterly neglected. He recently filled his new Pathfinder up with petrol too You think with them not actually selling petrol ones he might have known better. I have a feeling that the later QX aren't vulnerable to transmission failure like the old J30 Maxima was. I have seen them in scrappys because of blown head gaskets though. It's the DOHC V6 which is much more of a pig to work on than the SOHC in the Maxima.

Knowledgeable Australians, on learning I had a Mitsubishi Sigma, warned me that autobox implosion was probably imminent.
reallyloud
We had a '99 V6 Galant with an Autobox a few years back, gearbox had rendered the car useless by 34k. Shame really considering the japanese have always made smooth manuals.
Volksy
Does anyone know if V6 Camry autos are affected with premature box explosions? I was quite fancying a 24v Auto one..
pompei
My father in law has a V6 Camry (P plate) which just keeps going and going ...
Guest
I wonder why this happens - in the US they'll have loads of FWD Japanese V6 autobox motors which will average a lot more miles than we'd do and if they blew up every 50K there, you'd have heard something by now! Volksy
I think Hirst it maybe due to the Yanks obsession with 'Lube Jobs' (ooh err), a huge amount of people here never change their gearbox oil.And plus with 90% of cars sold in the US having Automatic Transmission, they probably have the necessary expertise to rebuild/repair the transmission at most garages, rather than in the UK where you have to farm it out to a specialist, and incur their often frightening costs. Spottedlaurel
Does anyone know if V6 Camry autos are affected with premature box explosions? I was quite fancying a 24v Auto one..I'm sure I've seen one on eBay with a dead 'box (estate like mine), maybe they were just unlucky and otherwise they're OK. V6 only came with auto here AFAIK. Followed one the other week while I was in mine, felt odd! That was a J-reg and clearly still going strong.Thirst would put me off though, but I bet they're quick. Something like 180bhp? Given how well 130-odd pulls mine around they must be a hoot.
Ratdat
I wonder if the UK vs USA reliability difference is because of more gear changes due to the nature of our roads? People definately drive cars harder and faster here than in the US from what I saw when I was there. Traffic pace was generally quite leisurely I found. r.welfare
I think this is a factor. Very short, low-speed, stop-start journeys can also play havoc - my mum's Honda Logo needed a recon CVT box last year (£2.5k!) and it's beginning to judder again after only 5k miles...the trans specialist reckons there is a new fluid out to combat this, but if this doesn't work (a month left on the warranty) it will get another one fitted then traded in PDQ.Having said that the 'box on my 170bhp Sigma was perfect after 115k, just a shame the head gasket was on the way out... Spottedlaurel
Funny how if it’s not the ‘box then it’s the head gasket(s) that are a problem on the FWD V6 J-cars. Or sometimes both if you’re unlucky…I’d dearly love a Legend one day, especially a coupe, but could never consider spending decent money in case something like that went wrong on it. At least with something RWD a different engine and ‘box can be persuaded in if all else fails, that’s my theory with the Laurel.Going back to the Maxima, the original J30 model which here was a bit of a luxo-barge without much badge appeal seems to be well regarded as a sporty saloon in the USA. There was mention of it in Car & Driver this month. Here I think the Maxima was dropped for a while, haven’t checked this but possibly Nissan GB didn’t immediately sell them after they took over from Nissan UK. Given how well 130-odd pulls mine around they must be a hoot. They are as far as I remember, A few years ago we had a unregistered brand spanker in our garage, seemed quick, think thats why i want one.. This one was owned still by toyota, it came to us for storage and minor repairs after it had been stolen from the dealer whilst on a test drive and subsiquently used in a bank job. So i guess the robbers thought it was quick enough too!
r.welfare
Either that, or so anonymously styled that no witness would be able to correctly identify it as the getaway car! I seem to recall reading a test of the Passat VR6 in Car that said something along similar lines.
Mash
I'm certainly dubious of older Japanese autos after a £450 bill to sort out the one on my Civic and then it still wasn't right. In a way I'm glad the Accord is a manual, I like autos but after a couple of bad experiences I shy away from them now.
