bigstraight6
Is the 1.2 engined Clio belt driven, or does it have a chain?

pogweasel
belt. Must be, there's enough of the fuggaZ on eBay listed with 'good runner until the cambelt snapped' type ads.
Albert Ross
1.2 Clio had 2 different engines. 1 was a chain drive up to approx 1993 and then went to belt drive with the ENERGY range of engines. The chain drive was also the original R5 engine, and other earlier stuff too.
25v6turbo
Albert, sorry but i must correct you,ALL 1.2 clios are belt driven, theres only one renault clio made with a chain, and its NOT a 1.2,can you name it(talking about clio from 1990 on)!!!you need to be a bit of a renner fan to remember them... Ross_K
The 1149cc D7F has a belt anyway, and they don't tend to stay on very long.I remember hearing 36,000 miles mentioned as the changing interval.
Albert Ross
You are thinking of the Night & Day.Only available in Black or White.But..............there were 1.2 chain drive Clios........May not have been a genuine UK spec model, but I'm certain, as it took 3 weeks to get a head set for it.Or am I wrong and was had over by my motor factors?? bigstraight6
Many thanks for all the informative replies chaps! I just had a notion that the 1.2 engine was the same old chain driven relic from the R5, the reason I'm asking is that I have the task of finding a replacement shiter for the sister in laws '85 Toyota Corolla that shredded its cambelt and kippered the engine so I thought something with a chain driven mill might be a good bet! Ratdat
The Nissans Sunny's from about 88-90 (Late N13 model) with a 1.4 or 1.6 are chain driven (GA series engine). Might be a good replacement for the Toyota and usually dirt cheap to buy.
mr-reno-139
to be really pedantic C1J engine is 1397 cc C1E is 1108 cc clio night and day/R5 TL C1G is 1237 cc R5 TR but what do i know ? surely if buying any car with a cam belt if you change it on purchase thats one problem solved at our end of the car market something else is bound to go wrong with it any way before the cambelt breaks on us then ( most likely some coded piece of electronics )
shite_meister
Nissan K11 Micra=chain driven
Richard
Timing chains are far from indestructible. You'd be better looking out for something with a non-interference engine.
Milford Cubicle
Nissan ones are supposed to last the life of the car, as long as oil changes are adhered to.Aren't many non-interference engines, I can only think of one off the top of my head - the EF12 found in Subaru Justys/Sumos. r.welfare
Or find something that is (a) cheap/easy to get your friendly local grease guru to change the belt on, or ( has had the belt changed recently.
Richard
You own one, I believe. I'm pretty sure the 8v SAABs are non interference. There probably aren't many examples now, what with the modern way of throwing everything except cubes at an engine to maximise the peak power. I know that Mazda engines used to be but I'm not sure about the more recent ones. One of the Pinto engines was and CVH engines appeared to be but weren't. I think some of these mechanics' data books tell you.
Volksy
Fiat F.I.R.E. engines were none interference, but your right, higher compressions to try and squeeze maximum power out of engines these days has put paid to that.Chains do last a lot longer than belts, but when they do need changing they can be very expensive.
