Renner Eleven

Here's the R11 GTL I picked up today. This is probably the most original car I've ever bought. It's lived it's whole life less than 2 miles from the dealer that sold it new, Mann Egerton of Lincoln. It's been mot'd and taxed on the dot every year and all the paperwork and history is still with it. It not only still has the invoice and order sheet from the dealer, the dealer sticker is still in the rear window, the Mann Egerton tax disc holder is still in it and the keys even still have a Renault/Mann Egerton key fob! It's been garaged and has had seat covers on it from new and only has just over 40k on the clock. I need to give it a good clean and some polish but for now, here's some pics...

All I can find wrong with it, is a wobbly LH door mirror, the plastic chrome gutter trims could do with replacing, RH door mirror rubber boot is perished, wheels need repainting and the LH door lock and digital clock aren't working. It could do with some new headlights some time too as the reflectors are beginning to rust inside. There's the odd ding here and there but it's never had any body repairs previously and there's no rust. To say I'm happy with it would be understatemant of the year. I only wish I could find more cars like this! It's a joy to drive too ..feels like abrand new car with no squeeks or rattles at all.

Looks really lovely that - I had it in my watch list too but again, Lincoln is way too far for me to drive to collect a cheap car.If the seller had posted better pics they might have had more interest - how much did you get it for? The £250 BIN?

Er...actually, no...I paid more than that! It may seem odd but you see, when I left to go see it there was no BIN on the auction so I I offered what I thought was decent price which was cheap for me but enough to tempt him to pull the listing (£400). He never mentioned it (fair enough..would you?) To be fair, I don't feel robbed. It would have been nice to save £150 but it's still a bargain for what I paid. Considering it's just had spent £485 on it for five new tyres, a new battery, new front brake calipers, hoses and a new exhaust back box four hundred seems quite reasonable.

Some more pics...

Unused ashtray and lighter. Blanking plate below for Radio. It's never had one despite having an ariel on the roof :?

These were in the glove box... bet that original Renault touch up isn't much use now!

Under the boot carpet... bit of dirt but just shiny paint..

Appologies to anyone who was bidding BTW. I feel mean going and doing a deal direct but it was too good an oportunity to refuse!

You just can't resist, can you Ed? Seriously nice example, very original and unmolested. I like the TXE but this is very cool too. Seems to be a strong non-J-tin theme running through the Ratdat scene at present.Very much look forward to a little drive in that...

Nice one Eddie.Good value too - I wouldn't worry about that BIN price. Wasn't the chap selling it on behalf of his mother?I always like to feel that on those sorts of sales an extra £150 means the little grey-haired old dear gets to keep warm next winter? :) The cynic in me also wonders if sometimes the son just hands over fifty quid - tells her that's all it went for 'cos no-one wants old bangers these days and scrap's worth nothing!! :(

I know but there's more to motoring than Japanese cars! I generally like more Japanese cars than any others but French stuff comes definately second. Besides which Nissan and Renault have an alliance which kind of makes me feel even more justified

Both her sons were there helping her to move home down to Dorset, nearer to them. She had had some trouble with her eyes and after treatment failed had ended up pretty much loosing the sight in one eye hence not being able to drive any longer. I think it going to a caring home was pretty important for here but I'm sure getting a higher amount was equally appreciated. They were pretty nice people too.

All the more reason to feel it was a good deal for all concerned then - good stuff! :D(I didn't mean to imply that my cynical view of some of these sales 'on behalf of...' applied in this case - just popped it in there 'cos sometimes I do wonder)

Usually I'm dubious of "on behalf of.." type listings but it this case it was clearly because the lady was very elderly. A lot of people do seem to use that ploy though. I wonder if they think they can't be held responsible if it's a crock they're selling.I must admit ity was refreshing to find a genuine car that was what it appeared to be and more. These days it seems that being mislead, having cars mis-described to you and being dissapointed has become the norm.

At it's test in 2006 it had done 40075 miles, in 2007 it had done 40195 so it was tested but covered very few miles. No clue as to wether it was taxed or not but I should think it was. It's been taxed every May and the current tax disc is the same. The '06/'07 MOT cert is missing too but it definately had one as the reciept for the test is there.Incidentally, on the new car sales contract, it had a 1976 Renault 12 estate PX'd for it. Reg was MTL892P. I checked by it's been unlicenced since 1990 so long gone I would think. There's also some paperwork from a garage date 1986 with a contract in which she was going to PX the R11 for a new Escort Ghia. Attached to it is a letter she wrote to them two days later confirming her change of heart so the deal never went through. Close one...if it had have been PX'd I bet it wouldn't be about now (there would have been a clean Escort Ghia for sale though  )

You can get full details of every electronic MOT a car's had at the web address it tells you on the certificate. It even tells you what it failed on. Use the number off the newest MOT or the V5 for a complete history, an old MOT number just gives you the history up to that test.

Amazing! As we’ve discussed before, now is certainly the time to be buying these elderly-owner ‘80s cars, I’m looking forward to doing more of the same once costs associated with the house have settled down. Having helped Baz pick up two of the 9/11 range has made me look at them a bit more, definitely think the hatches look better than the saloon.
