Saw this beauty in the carpark of our local Morrisons, and it struck me as to how common they used to be and how rare a sight they are now. The owner of this one seems to use it as a workhorse as originally intended

Triple that and you are probably still not even close to what they make now that scene-tax has properly kicked in.

I saw a stripped shell, which needed welding and with a very dodgy ID make £700. Madness.

As a proportion of production versus roadworthy survivors the mk1 Escort is probably doing as badly as the likes of the Renner 14 and Moggy Marina. The difference being if you find a R14/Marina roof, it isn't worth attaching a new set of panels to it

I was about to say something similar Pog- wonder if the owner knows what it's worth? From it's rather battered state, I'd guess not! Whilst standing in the car park at a local retail park the other day, I was struck by how scarce anything over about 7 or 8 years old is these days. It's not that long ago, is it, that a good half of the cars you'd see in any big car-park were 10 years or more old. Guess it's down to "easy credit," the relative cheepness of new cars, and the price of scrap!

That it seems to be getting expensive to keep our shite on the road, I have a mk2 Astra 1.6 auto and have been doing a tour of the local exhaust centres for a front down pipe, 3 years ago I got a complete set for £100 and now I have been quoted £90 quid just for the down pipe. It was worth seeing the expression on the guys face though when I told him what I drive, 'Rare beast those mate' ' can't get the parts no more'!!!!!!!!

I went to Kwik Fit last year to book my Renner 25 in for a full system, and was told "No probs mate, just bring it in any time, and we'll do it." I suggested they may want to check on availabilty, as they're not exactly common place any more. I got one of THOSE looks ( ) as if I didn't know what I was talking about, and so I said I'd bring it in after work the next day. Was unsurprised, and quietly pleased, when they called me and said it would take 4 or 5 days to get a system in. Hate it when the bored, superior staff at these places assume they know better than the customer.

I believe the Escort vans are rarer, you don't even see more MkII vans or estates than MkI vans or estates....infact not even loads more MkIIs than MkIs of any sort! Do the vans go for more than the estates or is it just that all MkI Escorts go for shitloads whichever type it is? (apart from the sporty ones which go for shitloads x 100).The H reg estate looks in good nick to me! Not pristine no but very respectable! (....and I've just returned from the opticians with no real problems to worry about either! ) Mr Cubicle don't you mean circa 1970!

Exactly. On a few occasions over the last few years when I have actually had some money I have contemplated buying something 'well known', for example a decent Mk1 or a VW bus or whatever. But then you think, why the chuff should I pay through the nose. I'll stick to my bargain banger, ta.

The RWD Escort has been a victim of its own success. I've got a Mk2 Ghia, brought in 1995 for £250 and back then Mexico Mk1's were selling for £200 to £3000. (a garage near me had a mint original TC about a decade ago for £9000...) Four door models made much less, including auto versions with the all important wider transmission tunnel the racers want.Prices have been rising due to the rise of historic motorsport, many RWD Escorts have been smashed, plus they are still highly popular in Ireland in non historic competitions, yet as there is no supplier of new shells, standard cars have been brought and mercelessly stripped to the point they are now making serious money and STILL being stripped for competition use. (any two door auto is worth $$$).As for that van, its an early version, G platers are very rare so that figure for it hardly surprises me, it might even have the early spec front suspension making it super scarce.

They're fairly bland/common 1960s fodder, I don't get it. I imagine they're sweet to drive and all that, but they're so dull for the money...

Not THAT exciting though. The one I had was adequate, would thrum along at 70 all day, X-flow valves-a-clattering, and wouldn''t necessarily fall off the road at the first corner (still a bit sea-sicky for my liking), but nothing to really write home about. I will concede that it is a very aesthetic shape in all forms (except the van, which was a bodge), which has weathered well. I guess it's the 'everyman' appeal, there were that many fruity ones churned out that many folk have strong memories. Plus the fruity ones are probably the closest we ever got to the Mustang "race on a Sunday, drive to work on Monday" thing.

Silly Mk1 escort prices make me love my Datsun 510 even more. A superior machine and a fraction of the cost. Shame they sold so few in this country. I laugh at the poeple paying crazy money for a car with cart springs on the back and more often than not an OHV under the bonnet They are a cool looking motor though..can't deny them that.

Well spotted. Definitely something funny going on with that one - check out the spray job on the underside. Whoever did it managed to get everything - the axle, springs, shocks, everything except the exhaust:

 

The guy selling it goes by the name of 'Capri Spares' - he musta decided to branch out into Escorts. Not surprising considering the seeming endless number of victims, er, enthusiasts knocking about these days.

I think he means that the Ezz still looks like it would have in about 1977 when it was a few years old.I do quite like the Mk1; a guy I know has a very tidy, low-mileage 1300 XL 4-door which is a beauty of a car. The driving position felt spot-on as soon as I got in it. I have to say, if I was getting one, I'd tend to go for one like that rather than the sports models.The prices are just crazy though, and I suspect bandwagon syndrome. Give me something more obscure (and cheaper because of it ) any day.
