I've never had one, in the past I've tended to break out Mr Angle Grinder when it comes to getting rid of a car after I've cannibalised it for spare parts and deliver the bite-sized pieces to the local recyclers, sadly I don't think we can do that here as the one and only scrapyard doesn't have a weighbridge. Pillock Posted April 24, 2008 Share Posted April 24, 2008 When i sold my Mondeo as scrap on ebay (kippered clutch at 197k...), the guy only checked it still had a cat on it before winching it onto his recovery truck. anything else was a bonus i guess, I got £102 so £40 for the cat, £60 for the engine and the rest is frag-feet profit. it still drove if you were careful! I can see the damage but that looks like it might have come from being forklifted around in the depot, even with major mechanical failure those things surely can't be life-expired at seven years old. r.welfare Posted April 25, 2008 Share Posted April 25, 2008 It still seems very new to be frag-fed, although I do wonder if the damage to the roof has anything to do with it, as the sunroof/windscreen ding doesn't seem to be forklift-inspired?It's depressing to see an LS400 in there because of the fact that I can remember reading all the car mags back in 1990 saying it was the best car in the world. I know that's 18 years ago, but still - it remains a desirable car to me, at least. The Discovery less so, but still seems odd to find one being cubed given that I would have thought demand was still high enough to ensure most don't get cubed. Having said that, a mate of mine recently spent £1300 on getting the rear floor of his welded, so it may have been more cost-effective for him to have done this (or learnt to weld). I saw a really clean 900 go past on a truck today, the Hiab boom resting on the roof didn’t bode well for its long-term future. CortinaDave Posted April 28, 2008 Share Posted April 28, 2008 Was at the car auctions in Glasgow yesterday looking for some shite for the missus.. and was surprised to see how many cheapies could still be bought given the high scrap price at the moment.Bargain of the day i thought was a T plate laguna with 5 months test.. looked a tidy car all round although i hadnt paid it any attention before it came under the hammer so i dont know what horrors may have been lurking.Sold for £110 plus the £50 indemnity (con) feeMy local yard is paying £160 now so buy it- if its a no hoper- weigh it in.. no loss.I only passed as i had no way to get it home since my missus was also buying. pity.Got her an S plate Fiesta 1.25 Zetec with long test for a shade under £500.. all that i can find wrong is dodgy door locks. My mate has just had to get shot of his car, running costs getting too high, most of his money has already gone of mortgage, council robbery and the ever increasing shopping bills! There could be any number of easily/cheaply repairable motors which are weighed in simply because hapless owners can't be arsed to see to them. Only option is ringing!As for the locks... cant get a new key as it only came with one.. which is a copy and not the red key annoyingly. pompei Posted April 30, 2008 Share Posted April 30, 2008 Seems this could be a way for disgruntled bunny-boiler ex-wives etc to go one step further than ripping the arms off your suit ... she takes your prized motor to the yard, and scraps it I am shocked that you can't buy a complete car from a breaker and run it again on the road if you're prepared to repair it. I guess a lot of rare classics have been broken for this reason.I'm reminded of the old BR steam loco stock that was scrapped at places like Dai Woodhams yard. Eventually everything got sold for restoration, even those engines that were considered too far gone, on the basis that anything is rebuildable with enough time, cash and effort.
