Seems very harsh to me.I'm not sure on what grounds he can be forced to get rid of them. Obviously there is some sort of legislation I'm just confused as to what. Is there a point when you have so many cars that the council can say 'thats to many, get rid' or is it just because some walkers have complained? :?

I had a look at the village on Google Earth just out of curiosity. There are a lot of cars in a backyard in the village which I assume are the Trabbys, the yard appears to be pretty well out of sight to everyone but the neighbours, walkers and others probably can only get a glimpse at best. So I wil guarantee that the main complainer was a neighbour

I think this will be his garden in the middle of the picture.

You can zoom out with the scroll wheel to see the surrounding area. It's in a National Park, which maybe makes a difference, but it looks as if you'd have to try pretty hard even to see them from the ground. Maybe I'm odd but I like coming across things like that when I'm out for a walk.

For some reason, old cars seem to have some extreme horror value to neighbours... having autoshite seems to put you in the same league as being a serial killer, mugger, kiddie fiddler etcMy social climbing neighbours HATE me because of my autoshite, and i dont even have that much!

I'd also wonder about the legalities here. It appears the legal action was taken based on the cars being an "eyesore" and to "prevent harm to the character and amenity of the area" I don't consider 49 trabants to be an eysore, quite the opposite in fact :) I would consider a huge collection of garden gnomes to be an eyesore but as i'm not a busybody and it's just a personal opinion I wouldn't complain. But if I did would the council force the owner to remove them. Doubt it.Now if Mr Goodall was running a commercial storage/scrap business without planning permission or if the cars were leaking fluids into to ground and causing pollution then it would be more understandable that he'd have to remove them. Also it could possibly be argued that the cars are "waste" or "litter".Anyway this Mr Goodall seems like a less extreme version of Michael Grimes of the Kells Trasmport Museum here in Ireland. If someone thinks that 49 Trabants are an eyesore I'd love to see their reaction to 200+ rusty buses :D

They added Mr Goodall did not have planning permission to store the cars in the grounds of his home.

repeat.....

Excuse me but how can they dictate what he does on his own land? That's just wrong

Dave, if you're ever passing through Auchtermuchty here's an impressive shite collection you can view, just off the main road. I believe it was once a churchyard and much of the church building is full of cars too. New arrivals are hoisted in with a crane that you can just about see a couple of rows in from the Back Dykes end.You can't see a great deal from the street, just an unfeasibly large number of Land Rovers/ Range Rovers and a forklift in an unfeasibly small space. As an added bonus there's a guy further up who has two Mk1 Escorts, a van and a camper. Aerial photo

I agree. Since when did you need to have planning permission to store stuff on your land? If it comes to it there's a house I pass everyday where the garden is chock full of gnomes and other tacky nasty ornaments. Maybe I should complain about that to the council...

Looking at it from the other point of view I suppose there may be some kind of environmental issue, but seems a bit draconian.

I wonder why he wants 49 Trabants anyway? Why not get 1 and a variety of 48 other cars, be much more interesting. Come to that, why would you want even ONE Trabant?

when i lived in Munich we had a big ol crumbly house in a millionaire suburb. My flatmate had a couple of post Bambinas in the garden..and the nazi neighbors complained..Yan found out u could have cars in the garden as long as the engines were removed..so thats what he did..dropped the motors out and left the carcasses..much to the dismay of the grizzlys next door..Trabis replaced gnomes after the Wall...everyone had one in the their garden after that..its also practically compulsory to have a wreck in yor driveway here in NZ..whilst in somewhere like Tasmania where my Dad used to have a small farm..it was illegal to have a dumped car..he had a A60 stationwagon of which was practically gone that he had to keep quiet about..

Mr Goodall seems to be being treated very unfairly and the reason is surely that Derbyshire CC is so poncey about its 'lovely countryside' which well-off weekend visitors are wont to go a-rambling in (and spend money there because they like hills, dales and historic villages, not appreciating Alteostdeutschlandautoübershite). A pity he can't get a Top Bastard Lawyer to argue & win his case (like drunken footballers do when they are caught being twats in their vulgar cars), or maybe declare himself The National Peak District Trabant Museum, as with that clever old chap in Ireland and his buses. You probably only have to fill in a few forms, charge admission, put in a baby changing facility, and the next thing you know they're giving you a £6m Lottery Grant and the MBE.

But the one about 'eyesores' being 'offensive to neighbours' is useful to know. Don't mind gnomes (which are a bit surreal and poignant), I'm going for pebbledash on Victorian brick. Oh yes, and replacing perfectly good sash windows with PVC... Got a little list.

I've been to Middleton by Youlgreave, it's a hoot!!! You can't see the Trabant field unless you really look hard, but there are a few Trabi's knocking about on the street, including last time I went (just after Christmas) a car Transporter with about 5 on. Including an estate!!

cough splutter..think i just choked on a carrot grown on top of a trabi grave...dont u think sensible storage is a better idea... one here in New Zealand can acquire a sizeable shed to store everything savely away rather than let them rot in a field..there are at least 85 classic cars here on my street and they are all indoors..i live above my Viva and a Bambina...i love junkyards so i feel like a hypocrite..but i ve also seen scrapyards out of control and environmental hell..http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=147404358

You seem to have slimmed your fleet down a lot lately Dave, weren't you up to about 8 at one stage?

Not really.. I'm in the process of slimming down but not there yet! I've shuffled where they all are about a bit to stop the neighbourly bite.Currently -3 Cortinas - the mk4 2.0S and a Mk4 2.8 Ghia I've just bought... the S is parked at my parents as no tax so not a problemThe mk3 GXL is down at my mate's in the borders for some work and should come back MOT'd then i'll probably ebay it.2 calibras.. I ebayed the good one and it fetched the crappy sum of £290 on a £350 reserve so I've sold the trim, wheels, K+N filter, gauges etc and I'm going to weigh the rest in this week. Shame but hey ho.The other one still awaits the removal of its LPG kit, then that will be going too... hopefully next monthVectra - STILL at the insurance garage nearly a year on awaiting payoutBlue probe - daily driverRed fiesta - Girlfriends daily driver till the MOT runs out in june then will be weighed in. She refused to put any oil in it so its now a blue smoke special. Shame.SO - if all goes to plan, I'll just have the Probe with LPG on it as a daily and the 2 mk4 Tinas as backup /funMissus is going to run about in the 2.8 day to day when the fiesta goes.May even have room for some more shite - I fancy a Rover SD1 8)

Absolutely. Rented a house years ago in a posh village outside Guildford. One Mundaino owning neighbour told me that my van (orange tiger striped J2) was an eyesore and he would be complaining to the council about it. I pointed out to him that I find all Mondeo's eyesores, and yet I am forced to look at hundreds of them on a daily basis. He stormed off muttering, but I never did get a letter from the council. On saying that, it's not fun to fall out with neighbours, no matter how unpleasent they can be. They really can make your life hell, as this poor old Trabby owner has abviously found out.

Absolutely true. I am lucky that my neighbours both sides are great - one side take parcels from the postie for me (usually containing car parts), saving me the trek to the Post Office in the village; and I actually supplied a car to the ones on the other side!Obviously I don't take the piss by cranking up the grinder or welder at 11 at night, which probably helps. Usually get interest and a few words of encouragement when I am underneath something on the driveway at the weekend; have also received a number of tools on long-term loan (i.e. free!) from them. They do think that I'm either mad or unemployed, due to my 56-reg Saab 9-3 (which wasn't actually "mine" anyway) now having been replaced by two L-reg Peugeot 405s, but hey...I guess it helps that I have an attached garage (only house in the street - others have a garage in a block but they don't put their car in it  ) and offroad parking for 4/5 cars, so I don't get involved in the territorial disputes over parking at the kerb directly outside one's house. Generally my neighbours play this game sensibly, but there are ongoing levels of resentment between certain neighbours surrounding this. They've recently built some more houses at the end of the road with insufficient parking provision, so it's only going to get worse...

In the States some towns/counties have local bylaws that state the number of non-'on the road' vehicles you can keep in your yard/garden - (this being in urban areas).I think it's fair for councils to respond to complaints about shite-hoarding (using 'shite' in a more general term) as houses with lots of crap around them, be it cars, building materials, old furniture or cookers whatever are usually fairly unpleasant to be next to.However taking that prinicple further to complain about individual old cars is a bit too far. There was a old boy in North Wales who had 200 2CV's or similar festering in a forest valley. When they finally cleared all of them, the recovery company (with a couple of 2CV club people on site) said there were about 2 cars worth saving. Ultimately leaving a car in a garden, field, under a patch of trees etc, for more than a few months will ultimately consign it to scrap status in our climate - seen this happen many a time myself in west Wales, with everything from 1970s Lancias to Volvo 740s.

I had a similar conversation some years ago with a neighbour who took offence at my red-oxide 1967 Reliant Regal 3/25. I had had a beer or two when the confrontation took place and was therefore not at my most tactful; my response was similar to yours but "all Mondeo's" was replaced by "your missus". I came out the next morning to find that someone had smashed one of the rear side windows of the Regal - completely unconnected I am sure.

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure storage is a damn site more expensive in the UK....if you can find any.Old barns get converted into posh expensive houses and planing permission to stick up a hanger sized store would be laughed out of the council offices. That coupled with the fact that old houses were built with no parking spaces and new ones are built with too few mean that most roads are full of peoples cars.

^^^ What he said. And someone told me recently that local councils are going to require planning permission to turn a front garden into a driveway, or something. I did mine about 3 years back, so I hope it's not going to be applied retrospectively. To get barn-type storage you need £££££££ to buy an old farm or similar, here in the South-East at least, today. Or move somewhere else - SL seems to have come up trumps in Norfolk, but that's an awful long way for me to commute...Just one of the problems around living on a small, overcrowded island I guess - certainly the wide open spaces of NZ, Oz or Middle America have appeal! The other option is to rent a lockup garage from the local council, going rate is between 7-9 quid per week down here. I've got one with nothing in it, actually. Need to rectify that - Simon, did you get those pics of that 528i on R-R?

I live in a pretty snobby area and seem to get away with owning shite, although a new neighbour up the road gave me a bit of a mucky look when I first rolled up in the beige Galant playing banjo music and unloading crates of moonshine from the boot. This was offset by an elderly couple admiring it and giving their full approval.I reckon a lot of it is to do with me keeping everything shiny and clean. If I had a load of cars which were moss-covered or missing most of their panels, I suspect it'd be a different story. They're kept in the driveway, so they're not really hidden from view, but I can't really say I've had any complaints. However, some people are utterly unreasonable and will kick off with their neighbours over the slightest thing - pathetic really. I don't like crazy paving, but you don't see me writing to the council about it.
