Autoshite is full of absolute nonsense posts at the moment, so I thought I'd just post in this handy spam thread instead.

Nice MK2 Cavalier from the brochure, I scanned this. I like MK2 Cavaliers, I would quite fancy owning one at some point. I pondered buying a red one that turned out to have been previously owned by someone off here, but the buyer seemed a bit "off" so I didn't proceed. They're such a handsome and proper car. I like the MK3/MK1 too, but the MK2 is my favourite.

Funny thing is though, the spec of them is very "mean". It's taken me a while to decide this, but I think Vauxhall are the tightest when it comes to specifications. Ford actually do more worse-off cars in all kinds of ghastly specs, but the mid-tier stuff is quite decently equipped. Always seems like you have to go a bit further with a Vauxhall before you start getting an AM radio and suchlike.

I notice it has a trim ring and centre cap combo, that's a stylish way of going about things. Wonder why car companies didn't proceed with that look, it's a really good way of having a basic wheel but it hides all the muck/pitting that you inevitably get in the steel rim. Even the tatty steels on my Stanza look alright when I lob some trim rings on.

Back to the Cavalier though, I think I would definitely have a saloon, it's more "me". I think my dream Cavalier would be a prefacelift MK2 1.6 GL saloon in that industrial blue they made. Has to be said, Vauxhalls have come in some pretty horrendous colours over the years - not like absurd BL style safety ones but all kinds of grim light plant machinery type colours. You just have to embrace it though, that's what I'd do, that's why I want it in that blue.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the picture at least.

Nice thread hijack Hirst! Maybe you should hijack some of the non-spam efforts too.

Forum regular Richard utterly hates Mk2 Cavaliers, he probably burned this one down as it's not that far from his house.

I have a probably irrational mild liking for them as I imagine they're as clumsy to drive and miserable to own as Richard says they are.

My old neighbours across the road had the 'anti-Hirst' spec Cavalier 130 SRi hatchback in bright red when I was a kid, I loved it.

I do admire the way Vauxhall were dead set on colour-matched interiors at that point in history. You can just about see it in that photo - the poorly-dog-shit green paintwork and the poorly-dog-shit green seat fabric. I don't know what the dash would have been like on them but on my grandparents early ('89) Mk3, the metallic blue paintwork was matched to blue seats, blue carpet and a blue dashboard. It actually used to make me sick, it was that blue.

I guess they had the factory set out wrong, and the cars were painted after interior was fitted but before the glass?

Wow, when was the last time you saw a pre-facelift one like that? A long time since i've seen a booted version of any sort too. It's funny, looking at that picture you can see how much they bought over from the MK1 around the rear end, but the hatchback version looks like a totally different car.

I like the MK1 best, I think that whole era of Vauxhall styling was really coherent, and that 'aero' nose really singled out Vauxhall from any other British cars. I like how they managed to keep a pretty solid 'brand identity' with the next generation of cars too (MK2 Cav, MK1 Astra, Senator etc)

I just get the impression that they'll drive alright, though I'm not fussy really. About the only thing I can't really do with is a rubbish gearbox and I imagine a Cavalier one will be nice enough.

This is the colour I mean, I've seen this one out-and-about. Weird Hella spotlamp grille! Wonder if they still make those. It's even got a TNB numberplate like my Laurel, I should get it for a matching pair.

Check out this for weird!

First Vauxhall Cavalier and it's in a configuration we didn't even get! Presumably after that shot, they hastily removed all the badging, turned it into a Chevrolet Monza and fired it off to Brazil.

Wonder how/why? I've got a launch brochure and they're not even mentioned. I like a good 2-door saloon, dunno why South America gets to have them all.

I was never a fan of mk2 Cavaliers until recent years when I noticed most have now disappeared. I would love to have a drive of one now.

The reason for probably not liking them is because the former wife of one of our old neighbour’s (of whom we used to have countless arguments with before she left her husband and two young kids - she used to love parking right on top of our drive making it near impossible to get on/off it) had one pretty much identical to the one you first showed, Hirst. It was a saloon and in that very colour too. It was either a base model or an 'L'. I'm pretty sure it was only a 1.3 jobbie too, for added shite points.

I even remember the registration number - BKL 708Y. Anyway, it disappeared in the mid-nineties thankfully. It was a fairly tidy thing. It had a bit of rust on the front valance and I remember the petrol cap was pushed so far in I haven't a clue how she used to open it to fill it, but other than that it was in decent nick. Yes, it had that very fetching, matching green interior too.

I've not seen a pre-facelift model in the metal for a couple of years. I can't even remember the last time I spotted a saloon pre-facelift one. An elderly gentleman owns a last-of-the-lane, locally registered, 'F' plate saloon in light blue which I often see, but that's about it in terms of mk2 Cavaliers around my way these days.

I thought there were a very small handful of two door saloons sold here? I seem to recall seeing a press picture with half a dozen or so early 'W' plated examples lined up... I could very well be mistaken or these cars were pre-production models or something. I've never seen one in the metal though...

Try VW for stinginess! When buying a new Polo, I complained to the salesman that it didn't have a CD player - "It's a VW mate, your lucky it has 4 wheels"

Seconded. My father briefly had a K plate Golf CL. I was quite shocked to find that it only had a four speed box and manual locking, yet the two mk5 Escorts he'd had back to back though work previously were considerably better equipped (to say the least). Getting in the Golf was like stepping back a decade. Neither of them broke down either - unlike the Golf.

Vicsmith used to have a Sportshatch, it's now owned by Coggers off some other forums. Was lovely, needed a bit doing to it though. I polished the roof once, which probably helped.

My launch brochure for the Mk2 Cav listed the three door model. I think the base models had the Vauxhall trick of puting the steering wheel from the range below on. For example the base model Chevettes had a Viva "energy absorbing" wheel and the base Mk3 Cav had the two spoke Astra wheel.

I've always wondered about that photo Stan, it's in a book I have about the British motor industry that gave no explaination as to why it was a two door. I think they were briefly available though, although they must've known it would eventually be a failiure as the MK1 2-dr sold so badly. I guess that the tooling had already been made up for the european and S.A markets, so it wouldn't be such a dead loss knocking out a few for British consumption. I've never, ever seen or heard of one surviving though.

The UK market wre all to happy to embrace the 2 door Cortina, Marina, Avenger and even Mk1 Cavalier. I suppose they thought it would sell better.

I would say that the popularity of the 2-door saloon nosedived here around the time boxy styling came in, before that it was pretty popular, so you have to wonder why it suddenly came to an end.

It seemed to come to an end in the UK before the rest of europe. I think you could buy a 3 door Sierra 2.0is in France after 1986

Funny really, because conversely I reckon we were slower to adopt the 5-door hatchback. I wonder if they'd have bothered making the Solara if it wasn't for the UK?

There's a green one near me, which is driven by a Father Christmas lookalike. I'd love to buy it (if I had money or the urge to build my car collection up again), but I fear there'd be white beard fur everywhere.

How good is old shite when it's driven by some auld scrote who has no idea how super the car looks? eg. A local old man and his wife (well into his 80's) drive a truly splendid silver Nova GSi/GTE complete with RAC badges. I haven't seen him for a while though. Another is a green Polo/Golf from the 70's, again driven by an elderly gent.

I love Mk2 Cavs, but have only driven a 1.8 Cabriolet on the road. Not helped by being a 3-speed auto, but pleasant enough.

First car I 'lap' drove as a nipper was a Cavalier 1.3L. I'm pretty sure it was a 1.3. My uncle towed a caravan with it! Hence I could 'lap' drive it around campsites. Excellent.

Because he got them as company cars, I always got the brochures. I really liked them and must get around to tracking down one. The best one had the full Vauxhall range, and I loved the silver SRs with their funky wheels from the start.

I think the UK company car market had a bearing on the decision to introduce the Solara but the success of the 305 may of had something to do with it as well.

BTW, what came first, the Renault 20/30 or the Rover SD1? I really can't remember.

Had one snot green (Pea green) early saloon and another brownish coloured one with amzaingly vile sort of orange seats. Low spec ones are pretty dismal but sort of pure with a weird sense of appeal.

SRi (1.8 or 2.0 130) models are a good laugh.
