Travelling with a camera: my photo scans from the early 90's

Thanks for the comments! Glad you like them Brammy - my old Canon AE1 took my best ever snaps and the 35mm film captures a certain ambiance that the more clinical digital camera cannot reproduce. I've actually started using that Camera again too. The Opel is a mystery - perhaps it was rallied or maybe exported to Ireland?

A few more taken 'back in the day' all in Oxfordshire circa 1992/93.

This was taken in 1992, and liability expires only a year later.

Snapped sometime in the early 90's - part of the joyriding craze that swept the area at the time.

Sanpped in 1992, and scrapped shortly afterwards.

Scrapyard snap in 1993.

How do you decide what to put on http://www.reallyloud.co.uk Flickr or whatever? Are there some "rules" or is it just random?

Totally random! I have more pictures than I know what do with to be honest. I might put the lot on flickr as it solves a lot of hosting/storage issues and so far flickr seems to be quite reliable.

A few more scans - these ones are a bit more recent.

That explains that then, thanks. :)

Went right through just one section on http://www.reallyloud.co.uk over a few days and couldn't believe how many great pictures you have! Soo many different makes and models that you just don't see any more. Makes you appreciate how difficult a job DVLA must have keeping track of them all! :)

Blimey an R-reg Accord!

It's good that you had the foresight to take these photos when these were just ordinary old shitters rather than something with more interest as they are now especially in the pre-digital days when your 24 frames meant you had to be more discerning! Excellent pics as ever :D

The majority are actually scrapyard shots, while I took quite a few streetshots for some reason I was a little more concerned about privacy than I am now.

A few more, slightly more Japanese-centric. I'm starting to have trouble in remember specific years on some shots....

I'll get some more up tonight before bedtime!

I have descriptions and a bit more background info on all snaps on flickr too, as dumping them on here and then walking away seems a bit uncharitable.

I took an even spread - obviously concetrating on stuff from Japan, but this is just a random selection - I'll grab and load of British stuff for scanning later this week. I've noticed there's a lack of German cars too, so that will be addressed at some point. I reckon I took in the region of 1000+ cars on 35mm film in scrapyards alone - so I expect the scanning to go on for a while yet......

Ace stuff RL! The yard shots are very atmospheric.

In fact - they have such a 'feel' to them, I swear I know what it feels like to stand in some of those spots. That yard in the trees looks very much like one near Chobham. I used to get plenty of R4 bits and some Crown parts from there back in the day.

If it is the same place, then you must have been visiting there roughly the same time as me - 'cos I swear some of those stacks look familiar (I'm guessing early Crown, 604, R14, 128 are some of the shots from there?). Having said that - those old stacks seemed to stay in place for an age - there could have been a decade between visits and it would look much the same. :D

More recently I visited while 'passing through' - they then seemed to be having a run on Acclaims - there were five or six of them, all looked like going concerns.

It wasn't a complaint by the way, just interested! Scan whatever you like :D

Agree with what has been said, these are wonderful pictures 8)

That white Volvo has, in the back window, the 'Don't Ban 4 Star' sticker given away with Practical Classics.

I put my sticker in the back of my Panda (which used unleaded....). Would be about 1997.

Why did you take these photos in the first place, was is foresight that the cars won't be on the road in 20 years?

A little bit of that, I was always keen on 70's cars - even when they were current. I noticed how quickly most of them had rusted away in the early 90's and decided to seek them out. It actually started as an art project - research for drawings and then it got out of hand and almost became an obsession..... I always find these place quite serene and I still get a huge kick out of visiting these places.

Here's a few more random scrapyard scans dating from 1992 to 2000. Scary thing is that when I took them it didn't seem like that long ago....
