barrett
Brighton circa early 1980s. They were using these Atlanteans all the way up to the mid '90s and I remember riding on them a lot as a kid. They all went when the Brighton Corporation vanished and Brighton & Hove Buses became the sole bus company down here. I remember quite vividly the brown vinyl seats some of these still had, the smell of those mixed with the belching diesel engines is an olfactory delight completely lacking in modern bus transport! This street still looks more or less exactly the same today, which is nice
freebird
1960s/70s EssexEdit: Just noticed the Austin 1100 in the second pic. The reg no is almost identical to my dads old 1100 which was APK 267B which he owned around 1972.IIRC, they are surrey registrations, my Dad had his when we lived in North London and this pic was taken in Basildon Essex. What are the chances of that, huh!! boobydoo
I do like these old picture threads. You just want to dive into the picture don't you and have a gander about! Not the 1930s ones so much but deffo the sixties onwards. Tayne, as an Autoshite stalwart, I'm disappointed you don't recognise a 604 when you see one. I'm wondering if there should be some sort of 'shite' exam before people are allowed on here? Tayne
But I did recognise it. If you cover the front lights in that picture the body looks a bit like an early Audi 100 and if you look at the front lights alone they look a bit like an NSU Ro80.And they sold how many 604s over here? Actually that exam might not be such a bad idea...

jonny69
Shame a lot of the pics in this thread are now dead. Picked this one up on the 'Old photos of London and the East End' Facebook group. Forest Gate Maternity Hospital, 1985. Forest Gate Hospital had been an industrial school from 1854 to 1906, and in 1908 became a branch workhouse of Poplar union. In 1911 it was bought by West Ham union which reopened it in 1913 as a workhouse infirmary. By 1930 it had 500 beds for maternity, mental, and chronic sick cases. An extension with 200 beds was added in 1931. The hospital suffered bomb damage in 1940. New maternity wards were built in 1950. The principal building still retains its mid-Victorian institutional appearance. It is a brick range, 15 bays long and three storeys high, with round-headed windows to the ground floor and the central bay raised to form a low tower. Looks like someone was doing well for themselves with their nice new XR3i, but the rest of the visitors were suffering the stink of petrol and exhaust fumes in their hopeless old rubbish. michael t and Grundig

Tetleysmooth
Loads more pictures here jonny: http://newhamstory.com/image Norf of the river, but you'll get the idea. I'm 62 in July, and there's loads of stuff I've forgotten, but my East End days will always be with me.My favourite play area was Temple Mills railway sidings. Bloody dangerous or what!!!I was born in Mile End hospital and lived in Stratford until I was fifteen.Definitely wouldn't go back there now.I sometimes wish I could wire my head up and print photos from my memory.Where I lived in Temple Mills Lane was one huge bomb site. A young boys' dream playground.Anyway, less of my nostalgia and back to the thread......

Spottedlaurel
Just seen another Laurel, looks like they were popular in Colchester. This shot means something to me. In the very early '80s on a shopping trip to Colchester I got bought the Matchbox Superfast Corvette (maroon with white stripes, still have it). I remember getting it out of the pack before I'd got home and letting it run down the slope in that covered pedestrian walkway across the road from Keddies. Some of those photos make 1986 seem like a very long time ago. A memorable year to me as it's when I left school and started work. trigger
