michiel
Exactly 5 years and 1 day after we bought our first car together, we bought our second one. The Starlet was heading for some big big repairs, and we wanted more luxury and comfort (relatively speaking). I looked around, and found only 1 option (we wanted a small and light Japanese car...). This morning I drove off in this: and returned in this: They came with either a 58 horse 3-cylinder of a 102 horse 4-cylinder, so that wasn't a hard choice to make. Finding one was a bit harder, there aren't many around here... since we don't have personal plates we have to use our fantasy - so I reckon this is what a Jr sales rep (for 99 flake) would have driven. We went from a 1991 car to a 2002, so either this is our last car ever, or the next one will be a 2112 vehicle... can't break the pattern!

Albert Ross
Towbar FTW! What will it pull? Love the colour. Dutch dawdling green!!!!!
dollywobbler
Nice. I really like these. Am I allowed to say that?I'd always go for the shitty 3 pot myself though!
VWPowered
What will it pull?a bollock looks tidy that prefer the stalet though
michiel
The pics make the Starlet look better than it is... but I felt a bit sad leaving it there. It's 'British green mica', officially... I like the silly 'retroness' of the design myself, and all the chrome, it's just (sorry) cute.It can tow 350/950 kilos unbraked/braked - dunno if we'll ever use it. VWPowered
will pull afew bags of cement then chrome does suit it, not many new cars pull the bling so well
Station
That tow bar looks phallic. And what is it meant to tow exactly, a pram?
r.welfare
I reckon that will be a pretty painless ownership prospect, Michiel. And cheaper than the more boring and predictable Yaris alternative, no?Only a single electrical socket on the towbar so it will probably have towed a very small trailer with garden waste or similar. I'd leave it on, stops the back of your car getting destroyed if someone runs into the back of you at the traffic lights...
michiel
We've got a tiny rented flat and no garden, and only buy flatpack furniture that fits inside (or borrow a van) but the tow bar stays for protection indeed (will fit a tennis ball soon) - I like the idea of towing a pram though, would create a lot of panic on the motorway. :DA bit cheaper than a Yaris indeed, and I reckon I'll die before this does (and I'm 35). I haven't tried the full 102 horses @ 7000 rpm yet, it's pretty loud under acceleration, yet quiet at speed (again all relative to the Starlet). michiel
It's done 69,000km and we average only about 7,000 a year - in 35 years it'll have done a bit over 315,000... not impossible I guess, but it'll probably be illegal to drive petrol cars then. Guest
I'd always go for the shitty 3 pot myself though! To be honest the 3-pot will be a great engine, it's still a high-compression twincam which revs high. Daihatsu have made superb 3cyl engines for yonks, yet their hard work is undone because people automatically think of the toss Vauxhall 1.0 engine in the Corsa. Mr_Bo11ox
bloody hell, 950kg braked towing weight! Impressive, I wonder if they bump up that value a bit in the 'low countries' due to the flatness. 'Yeah theyre not gonna be doing many hill starts, tell em it'll do a tonne! whatever'
michiel
Very well possible... I think I'll keep looking for an old Cuore/Mira/Domino (1986 or earlier) for the 3 or even better 2-cylinder experience, the 3s do sound quite nice...
Station
I'd love one, I bet they're pretty cheap? What's the interior like?
pogweasel
I'd love one, I bet they're pretty cheap? What's the interior like?Cheap? Are they bollocks!I had a look earlier, they all seem to be about £3000, which is a bit steep IMO. Think of all the lovely, trouble-prone barge-bilge you could get with that! Milford Cubicle
Sensible choice there, I like these things. They are a bit colour dependent though, they look very 'cheap' in lighter colours - yours is just right.Surely the earliest one aren't £3k? I'm sure they started around 1999. Station
Yeah, for a 1999 car, I wouldn't be paying 3k!

Gompo
YES! I reckon these are ace, shame they didnt do a 5 door version. There's a famous writer/driver (and I think racer) who used to love these too, I'll remember his name soon. I was only thinking the other day that these should be shite soon, but as somebody said they hold their money fairly well. Shame the new version is not up to much. michiel
Didn't do a 3-door you mean? Used cars over here tend to be 1,5 to 2 times (and more) the UK price (or you could say depreciation is very low on cars...), so it cost quite a lot - on the other hand old shite is expensive too, so this might have bought me an average Beetle or shite DS... even the earliest 3-pots are still at least 2,000 euro.Florian's still at the garage (about 6 or 7 weeks now) due to parts searches etc, it's just a single bloke who needs to make money from normal repair jobs and needs to find spare time for mine. Fingers crossed...
Guest
Have to admit at one point I pondered buying a weird version of one of these, namely one of the following: I could have rustled up the money I think, but it sounded a bit too hardcore for me - it's a proper race car with a strange tuned-up version of the engine in my Cuore TR-XX (to neatly slot it into 1-litre class racing), 4WD with twin LSDs, most basic interior possible, super-harsh clutch, intercooler with external water-spray, even has a special lightweight windscreen. More info: http://www.sfc.wide.ad.jp/~uhyo/html/en ... R/car.htmlVideo (fast forward to about 1:10): Daihatsu were at their best when they were a bit off their rocker and knocking stuff like this out I think. seth
Don't think towing would be an issue with that. We manage a 300kg or so unbraked trailer tent behind an only slightly heavier car with about 40hp less...
michiel
X-4 sounds great - 120 hp, 713cc 4-pot. WTF?I might make ours into a Toyota Duet one day...Linda Ross is on my black list now. Off to listen to some Bach now!
