1998 Range Rover DSE Auto - Bit of a project

The fleet reduction continues, although it would probably help if I stopped buying things! This is my 1998 Range Rover DSE fitted with the superb BMW 2.5 litre straight 6 engine. I have owned this for nearly 3 years, the previous owner had it for 12 years, and there were only 2 owners before him. When I bought it, it had never had a tow bar fitted so had lead an easy life. According to the previous owner,  it had a new engine in it just before he paid 12k for it, but there is no documentation to support this. It certainly is sweet and uses no oil, so I suspect it is true.

Since I have owned it, it has been my tow car - something it excels at, returning mid to high 20s with a big Ifor Williams trailer on it, and low 30s solo, and not hanging about. It is only the constant electrical niggles, coupled with the failure of the rear shock absorbers that have seen it replaced. I was going to replace the fully functioning air suspension (fully functioning but the source of most electrical problems) with conventional springs, but have bought a Discovery instead, having had one before.

Good points:

Mechanically superb

Excellent cream leather interior

Fairly tidy bodywork

Never FTPed

Always starts and drives fine, no matter how long it sits

Would probably pass an MOT with rear shocks replaced

Low mileage for year

Everything seems to work, elec windows, sunroof, mirrors, heated seats etc)

Bad Points:

Some corrosion to bodywork

Front spoiler damaged (though should fix easily enough)

Both rear shock absorbers failed (snapped off)

Rear bumper off (removed to fit tow bar, metal bit was rotten but still have the plastic cover which I always intended to refit)

Various electrical warnings come and go on the dash, none seems to have an effect

The viscous coupling failed so I removed the fan and bolted the coupling. I never refitted the fan as it never gets too warm, even towing and it saves fuel (OK I was too lazy). Fan and cowling is with the car.

No code for the radio/cassette/6 CD changer

Tyres legal but will need changing soon

No battery

New bits fitted whilst I have owned it - water pump, oil cooler, regular oil & filters, gearbox oil flush and change, genuine LR tow bar, genuine LR plug and play trailer wiring socket, new glow plugs. The glow plugs are chinesium versions, and so it requires 3 heat cycles from cold, but then starts straight away. There is no battery as the one on it is 3 weeks old and cost me £167 so it is going on the Discovery. The one off the Discovery is getting near end of life, but is going on the Forklift.

Collection: There are several options, collect with a trailer/transporter, I can deliver at £1 a mile one way, bring a battery and a pair of rear shocks (48 quid off ebay) and use my shed/tools to fit them, a simple job (honest) that involves 2 nuts on each, the wheels do not even have to come off, and then drive it anywhere to a prebooked MOT (I am totally confident it will drive anywhere) or bring a battery and have a very bouncy ride to a prebooked MOT!

Swap/PEx for something suitably shite, preferably old shite. I have probably forgotten lots, pm me if you want to know more or ask for a phone number if you want a chat about it.

How much for  this amazing piece of Solihulls finest* motoring history? £500 and a bargain at that as it would undoubtedly break for more but I have too much on to do that myself.

That was quick. I remember sitting in that at Shitefest while Tayne tried to sell me on P38s.

Sell?

I might have pointed out that these were the nicest to sit in whilst you wait for the AA...

I reckon Drum might have bought this.
