They have the weird old 12v 4 cylinder engine, carbs, and the dash is too similar to my Civic so I'd just get bored. 4th gens have an F-Series, injection, and a much nicer interior. Besides, the older cars are starting to appreciate as classics, and are a bit more spendy than I'd like. (also 'rusty wheelarches' is a red flag on Hondas).

 

Also, I'm getting it as a long distance cruiser so I really want an auto.

I've had a lightbulb moment and am looking into the Lexus GS.

I had a 96 GS. Dull, not particularly quick and very thirsty. Nowhere near the same league as an LS. Nowt ever broke on it though.

 

A far more interesting proposition would be a Galant. My wife had a couple, quick, smooth, involving to drive and very well engineered.

I like the Giugiaro styling of the 1st gen GS, but I can imagine that the i6 ones arent particularly quick. Then again neither would be that Accord. They are probably great luxury cars but definitely not cheaper to run than a Legend if that really is an issue. Really not a fan of the 2nd gen's rearend.

Well it turns out I can insure LS400s for £reasonable.

 

Seems I can indeed go full-size executive - so LS400s, first gen Legends, XJ40s, 300SE etc is now what I'm thinking. 
Parents will probably tell me to fuck off, but I think my dad secretly likes LS400s.

I've had a couple of LS430s, a GS300 and have driven a mates LS400. There didn't feel like there was much to choose between the 400 and 430 whereas the LS felt light years ahead and utterly unrelated to the GS.

Beware though, there are some real dogs out there.

Before I got the super low mileage Omega that now resides with Brodders, I was about to go and view the only GS300 I'd seen advertised for sale that genuinely looked cared for and original. Most of the Mk2s really do look rough now, unfortunately.

 

I have a real horn for the Mk1s though. I nearly went to look at one in Sarf London but figured it was too far a drive to risk.

A real shame, but it was ever thus.  Buying cheap cars (which this is) has always been fraught with danger.  There are a few things you can do to mitigate, but sometimes you just have to walk away and chalk it up - especially when you're looking for one specific marque/model.

 

As for the LS400, genuinely (and this is the friendliest of friendly advice) have a real think about how long you can not just stomach the fuel consumption - but can afford it.  20 - 25 mpg might sound feasible and a bit of a laugh, and you can employ all SORTS of man maths (like the current drop in unleaded prices) but the brutal truth is...

 

The mode average mpg for the LS400 is 21mpg.

85 litres to full - total refuel cost is £101.15

Next ETA at filling station - 390 miles.

390 miles later you have to find another £100.

 

Sorry if I sound like a patronising old fart; that's not my intention.  But I'd hate you to get one - love it - and not be able to enjoy it.  The worst thing is when you've only got £10 to stick in, the needle barely moves and it just about gets you home before the light's back on.

 

As a second car for best? A great idea.  But as a daily?  Put it this way - a friend of mine bailed on his after 6 months and he earns a considerable amount.

I took my LS400 down once when working in Blackburn. It too the same amount of time as using the Derv Fabia I had at the time.

 

It used twice the fuel, but was twice as comfortable.

 

I was happy with the trade off as I was getting mileage paid.

 

 

Costs of running a big barge can be ruinous - think long and hard.

 

That said, I had a 4.0 xj40 when I was 19. Best thing I ever did. I also had a sensible daily (MK1 Seat Toledo TDI).

 

If the civic is staying you may be able to just keep the LS400 for best?

I run my LS400 as a daily, do a puny 7000 miles a year and would unlikely be able to afford to fuel it if I didn't get business miles paid back at 40p a mile. I do 180-250 business miles a month so usually get the cost of a full tank reimbursed. I tend to put in £70 every 12 days or so (can work from home one or two days a week to avoid commuting) and every third tank is a brimmed-to-spilling-point and maybe lasts an additional four or five days on top of the 12 .

 

HOWEVER, 21mpg is your ballpark MPG figure for most larger engined automatics so if you decide you can afford it then go in for a pound, as it were.

 

Or find one that's LPGed - not my cuppah but could nicely offset some costs if done right?

I daily cars that get the same MPG numbers, however my commute is fairly short. No matter what you get from that list though, they'll all be in about the same ballpark if not constantly cruising on the motorway unless you get a manual 4-cylinder that doesn't struggle with the car's weight. For me personally all that is worth it though if I dont have to drive a crapbox or something I couldn't care less about.

 

And yes, plenty of LS400 with LPG around if you are patient.
