Skattrd's red e36 - 6 pot turbo dizzle

I've got far too many cars. I've still not finished work on my house. I now have a job where I am busier than busy and often travelling by train, so obviously it's time to buy another car.

The first part of the journey is undertaken by my filthy 203.

The second, and where I am now, is on the train, budget ticket to that London procured. More trains will be involved

Is it French, diesel and a bit clattery?

Good guess but I've already got a red French clattery diesel, which I'd slightly forgotten about, make that 5 red cars at present.

Said red French clattery diesel could well be up for grabs if this motor turns out not to be an explodey deathbox.

Skattrd is currently having a pitstop at casa del six_cylinder. I've just had a shot in Red Car and it's mighty impressive. It has more power and torque than it left the factory with and the couple of times I gave it a full pedal bashing it shot off with plenty much rapidity. From what I can see of it in the pitch black it looks in excellent condition too.

15 minutes ago Skattrd left for home.

13 minutes ago I got a call from Skattrd saying he had reversed into a ditch and was stuck.

7 minutes ago myself and six_cylinder arrived to tow him out of the ditch only to discover that some passing good samaritans had already pulled him out.

5 minutes ago Skattrd set off for home. Again. Hopefully more successfully this time.

The offending ditch.

There are some gems in the eBay ad for Red Car.

Talking about 'the heart of the beast' the seller said "on tickover she sounds like a German tiger idling in the Hurtgen Forest".

My aural observation was that it did sound like a V8... so that description would be about right!

Ok, so, where did I leave off the story ... Wendover.

The seller arrived at the station within minutes of my arrival, my first impressions of the car were favourable, shiny, not pogweaseled, not immaculate by any stretch, but clean, tidy and well presented, not tired and worn.

I was asked if I would like to drive it to make sure it's ok. I said thank you and took up position in the pilots seat. There was a distinct smell of redex type stuff in the car. and the owner said he put some fuel treatment in every tank, it certainly smelt like it.

After minor tweaking of mirrors etc we were off. I was directed to the dual carriageway and told to accelerate hard. It moved quickly, not fast but definitely no slouch. The ride is fine, no untoward knocks and bangs, and the deal was done.

We had a little chat, he had owned the car for 10 years and knew the car well. I enquired about the gearbox oil, and he told me that it had not been changed as his garage advised against it, for fear of disturbing/breaking something... I shall look in to this, but I like nice gearbox oil, especially as I suspect this is still on the original 20 year, 200k mile old stuff.

I was also warned that he had spun the car twice, citing the gearbox as the culprit. It kicked down a little unexpectedly in the middle of a corner … I made a mental note to refrain from putting my foot down in the middle of a corner.

Darkness and rush hour was now approaching so being stuck in traffic on the way home was on the cards. I had been in contact with Bucketeer earlier as I was not far from 6cyl_acres, so I made a detour round to drink coffee and chat cars a bit.

6cyl and Bucketeer both had a quick shot in the red car and agreed it hides the miles well, and goes quite nicely.

Can you guess who made the wheels spin most on the test drive? hint, it wasn't me or Bucketeer ;)

I didn't take any pics on the way over to 6cyl, so here is one of a car in a ditch:

This was me turning round at the side of a country lane, in the dark, small ditch, unseen in the dark.

Two very nice chaps in a Pajero offered assistance, I had already called Bucketeer assistance and informed them that I had help on the way, but they helped anyway. A small tug and the car was on the flat. The tow rope was then detached, I offered some funds to buy themselves a drink and they declined, vey nice chaps said to put some money in for a charity, which I will do shortly.

6cyl and Bucketeer arrived just as the Pajero chaps were leaving.

After pleasantries (mainly Chris and Alex laughing at me) I said my farewell (again) and set off for home.

100+ miles later I was almost home, so just a quick stop for a kebab:

The reason for me buying a boy racer red e36?

After 100 miles range-ometer had dropped from 144 to 100, so economical driving.

Verdict, I'm happy.

It's a totally different car to drive to w202/203 Mercs I've used as dailies the past few years.

The automatic gearbox likes to change a little too frequently for my liking and it revs more like a petrol car than a diesel, which feels odd.

Whilst taking the last pics above I noticed the engine on tickover did sound like a cat purring.

The reason for it's purchase, I wanted to try an x25tds as I'm looking for an automaric veg burner with more than 4cylinders and the choices are limited.

I think it will take some time for me to get used to it. It definitely needs a different driving style to the Mercs, so we'll see how I get on with it.

I will need to get some winter tyres for it asap as apparently it's crap in the snow, the PO said he got stuck on the flat in it last year.

Thanks for the brew, and almost assistance from the above ditch Mr_cyl, Bucketeer, and it was nice to meet Mrs6C.
