Weird one here folks but bear with me. A local guy is selling an old moped I fancy but there is a catch. I know other people who have bought from him but he then turns up at their houses to talk bikes at weird hours and is a bit persistent. So what i want to know is how much info is on the letter the dvla send after ownership transfer? Does it say thanks for letting us know, or does it say you have sold it to Mr x of 1 main street etc. I am thinking I could do the change online to avoid the hassle but not if they then send him my address after. Don't suppose anyone has a copy they could check do they?

It says “we are confirming you no longer have an interest in vehicle VRM - make/model”

That’s it.

Most sellers will want your address rather than a promise to change ownership though in case you don’t

I know this guy as he is well known locally and have chatted to him loads of times so don't think that will be an issue, it's just that he ended up hassling a mate a bit, I don't think he means it and i will take it to show him when it is done, but I don't want him arriving at my house at 9pm but he is a nice guy so would feel awkward telling him to sod off. Told you it was a weird one!

If selling/buying  you do need to put your new keeper details on the V5C in two places , the bit the seller keeps and sends off and the bit you keep. However there are two ways round this - there may be others (1) I see no reason that you can't initially give an address as your own at a relatives house at the other end of the country as the address you are registering the vehicle at to avoid a visit or (2) use the online transfer of ownership option at the point of purchase - I have done this a few times on the .Gov.uk website with the owner as soon as I have the vehicle. The former keeper will have no record of your address then I think.

He was happy for my mate to do it online there and then when he bought a bike from him a couple of months back so that should be ok. It's a Honda mt50 which are crap but was my first bike, it's well ropey but has mot and is £200. I feel bad asking as he is a lovely bloke but don't want to have to rude to him done point down the line. Thanks folks for the suggestions.

Go for the online - I was amazed how easy (casual) it was. There is no signature etc. which probably indicates how little weight is attached to the V5 regards 'ownership' it just shows the legal keeper. You can keep a record by screenshotting the pages on a smartphone - but obviously use your own phone with the sellers permission and if its not valuable omit the screenshot or dont tell the seller. I tax my cars online but always screenshot the transaction and record.

Also as a buyer if you are concerned about their admin skills you can take the entire side of the new keeper slip, the doc ref number in the trader section is the same as the number on the main v5- in theory this allows the use of the online service in the same way as the existing keeper would with their section. Just sayin like.

Or if using the V5 come with a Swansea addressed stamped envelope - fill out both sections of the V5 sign and then put their section straight in the envelope seal it and say you will put it straight in the post and post it off.

It feels a bit Tommy Cooper - don a fez whilst conducting this operation and say 'just like that' a few times to distract them.

Yeah and when previous owner finds the bit they forgot to do, the V5 will then be void and out of date.

I only learnt this as the guy I bought the R11 off of didn't ever send it off.

An MT50 thats ace please tell me it's the orangey red they made them in, an old good mate had one when we were 16 when I had my AR50, his birthday is on the exact same day as mine and his surname is 2 letters off mine, we met by accident that's got absolutely nothing to do with the bike but its interesting* anyway please put pics up of it

It’s a no goer sadly, the guy has decided to hold onto it for a while (to be fair he did say he wasn’t 100% sure about selling it) but I have got first refusal if he changes his mind. Probably for the best as not ideal time with all the stuff going on but wouldn’t have missed out on it.
