wuvvum
Rotating knobs are often still a Bowden cable, with a rack & pinion type arrangement. On the LDV it was the clip which holds the end of the cable sheath in place which had come off, so the knob was just pulling the entire cable assembly up and down rather than pulling the cable through its sheath. Here you can see the rack and pinion system and the clip that holds the cable sheathing.
