I've decided that the e28 shouldn't really be pressed into service as a wbod for various reasons with the primary one being that the heater is currently non functional due to a knacked control valve.

 

As i'm temporarily unemployed the need has arisen to have something a tad more sensible to run as a wbod.

 

Scumtree has yielded a suitable candidate from one of the less salubrious areas of Bristol. I'm on my way to collect now in the E28. If you haven't heard from me in the next hour i've either broken down or been murdered!

The drive back home was interesting to say the least!

 

It was clear that the Rover hadn't been driven in a good few months. The brake discs were rusty as you like and it smoked a little on startup. It seemed to drive round the block ok and idled cleanly so paid up and off i went.

 

All was well for about five minutes until there was a funny burning smell! Pulling up to a set of traffic lights,i was rewarded with a cloud of acrid smoke emanating from the o/s front wheel. Hmm seized caliper then!

 

Decision, park up and wait for the disc to cool or press on for the remaining five miles home? The latter was chosen, reasoning that the cooling breeze from driving along would suffice!

 

Got back ok but disc was glowing cherry red. Rightly or wrongly, i lobbed four 2litre bottles of water at the offending disc to cool it down. Just been out in it and It seems to have solved the issue as the caliper is no longer binding.

 

I wasn't expecting a lot for the derisory amount that i paid for it but have been pleasantly surprised. The difference compared with driving a modern diesel is like chalk and cheese. The L-Series feels very agricultural and sounds like an old school diesel should - clattery. You have to drive it a totally different way as you don't get that instant response like on a modern turbo diesel. I had one of these diesels many years ago and forgot how much i enjoy driving them.

Seems that from looking at the MOT history, the car was off the road from 2011 through to 2017 which explains the low mileage. My guess is that an old giffer died and it got left in the garage. I've got zero history with it but it looks like it has been taken care of over the years.

 

Needs a few minor jobs doing such as aircon regas, tack the sacking headlining up, sort the saggy door trims out and try and fix the fecked Pekatron Trafficmaster clock.

 

The engine management light is on and delphi shows the code as P0251: Fuel Pump Control Unit - Signal out of range. I've tried resetting but light comes back on almost immediately. Its doesn't seem to affect the car in any way in terms of causing any performance, emissions or economy issues. Airbag light comes on intermittently which is hopefully just the seat connector.

 

Stank of dog as well so whole interior got the shake and vac treatment.

 

Service bits being acquired tomorrow as oil is black as night!

L-series diesel for the win, well chodded sir.

 

Brakes on these 45/HHRs are a known weak spot - when I bought the V6 two of the calipers were completely FUBARed and binding for England. If you feel up to it definitely worth spending some time checking over the calipers as the guide pin bolts (especially the top ones on the front) have a propensity to seize, and the piston seals usually have bloody great holes in them. Bigg Redd do repair kits.

 

Clock - TADTS - replacing is a bit of a faff as it's centre console out I believe.

Clocked up 250 miles in this so far and can confirm that mpg around town seems to be 42mpg ish which isn't too bad.

 

I've narrowed the slightly lethargic performance down to one of two issues. Either the fuel pump timing solenoid or the pump ecu.

 

The engine won't rev over 4500rpm and is quite loud at idle (known in Rover circles as tractor syndrome).The part is also fitted to the transit duratorq engines so easily available. It doesn't both me that much as it achieves motorway speeds and beyond easily enough, but would like to address at some point (part is £170.00). If its the pump ECU, then it can be fixed for around £70.00

 

However, today's mission was to create a little more wind (quiet at the back!) from the interior fan. Speeds one and two were none functional (TADTS) and three and four provide way too much gusto for constant use.

 

Ebay provided one of these chinese, expertly crafted items. At least they used thermal paste

The correct method is to remove completely but i couldn't be arsed with that so it got twisted until i could pop the retaining pegs clear of the frame.

 

No one has been in here since it was built, although one bolt was slightly rounded off

All put back together correctly and tested and wind on all speeds has been restored - although not in the right order!

 

For some bizarre reason, speed 2 is actually slower than speed one! My guess is that its been soldered incorrectly. Not a massive issue and will live with it. Off on a 80 mile round roadtrip tomorrow to Landfords Breakers to source some pre-project drive bits from a Rover 75 Conisseur SE that they're breaking.

The blower motor resistor that has been making the fan run at a higher speed on position one than two has now decided to get its act in gear and allow fan to now run in the correct speed order. Weird!

 

In other news, the pump timing Solenoid is definitely fecked. Just filled up after doing just over 100 miles since the last fill up and it took 15 litres which equates to around 32mpg ish. Solenoid is about £115.00 new but pump is a Bosch vp30 unit as fitted to Ford tddi and Duratorq so will nip down the breakers and see what they've got.

With the arrival of my new Swedish/Chineseium company wheels and incoming barvarian and hedge dwelling tat its with sadness that the viking shortboat is now up for sale.

 

I'm primarily a hoarder, not a seller so this is quite tough. Its been super reliable as i've been using for the last 3 weeks or so as my daily transport for work whilst i was waiting for my new company car to arrive. during that period its covered over 2000 miles with very little complaint and now has just under 60k on the clock!

 

Its had new front discs and an o/s/f caliper, and an aux belt and tensioner fitted in the last few weeks. I've not had a look at the tractoring as i haven't had the time to take it off the road and it really hasn't that noticeably affected performance in any way as i've been averaging around 49mpg. Drives fine at 85mph on motorway and it is generally a good steer.

 

I've got absolutely no history for it whatsoever but have had a look at the cambelt and its barely worn. All electrics work including the heated seats but aircon needs regassing. Seats are full black leather and free from rips although the door card and headlining material is a bit saggy in places.

 

Pekatron shite clock is fooked so i use my watch!

 

Its had a slight knock on the o/s/r in the past but not that noticable and hasn't been subject to any insurance claim ASAIK.

 

It will have a fresh MOT on it on saturday morning (this will happen!)

 

I need around £500 from it to offset incoming shite purchases.

Swedish/Chinesium - Volvo S90?

 

Love the Rover- never had more than a Mini (so not really a Rover...) But always thought they made really well sorted and good looking cars.

I wish! No it's a V40

 

There is definitely more than a hint of project drive going on with the 45 but it just feels a lot more solidly built and better screwed together than the 75. I actually much prefer driving it to the 75
