I've had this for years.

I replaced the turbo, vortex filter thingy, crankshaft pulley, etc with new BMW stuff

I've also recently replaced brake pads, new handbrake mechanisms on rear. Swirl flap have been blanked.

It had two new rear tyres in the summer, and I've just put two on the front. (I had four tyres blow due to hitting potholes in the space of six months).

It had two new injectors last year. Injectors were properly seated and they do not leak.

It has the M-Sport interior, and is very tidy with no rust on the body. Everything works. It's a manual gearbox.

It just failed it's MOT today and I really can't afford to get it fixed so it has to go.

Anti roll-bar linkage ball joint excessively worn O/S/F

Exhaust emissions exceed level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine

Exhaust has major leak of exhaust gases

Parking brake efficiency below requirements

Handbrake works fine (I had the brake discs off and set them up a couple of days ago) and I can't see any major leaks of exhaust gas, or blowing. It smokes like any other diesel over 4000rpm hard acceleration, but no idea on emissions. Might help to go to another MOT tester.

No raffles sorry. I'm by Chester.

The black smoke will be a boost leak, probably a split in an intercooler hose.

Would that affect emissions? I did a quick check a few days ago. It’s tight down there.

Mine had the common problem of a tear in the upper rubber hose where it fits to the EGR intake. Any boost leak leads to overfuelling and black smoke. They can both be removed (not bad once the under tray is off), cleaned up and inspected. Mine had a very small split and caused a lot of black smoke.

Emissions probably related to exhaust 'major leak of gases'

New intercooler hose and cheapest ECP drop link on it, weld up exhaust or ‘repair’ with some bandage, test it then stick it up for £995. Then wait for half of Eastern Europe to beat your door down.

The hoses are 20 quid on Ebay new. The exhaust leak could be the flexy joint, not nice to fix but bodgeable.

Fixed drop link, the blow in the exhaust was a sleeve joining the cat and the rear back box. Three days of the usual back and forth service from Euro Car Parts, and replaces with a new one and re-re-re-set the handbrake.

car isn’t producing any black smoke but it failed retest in emissions.

i read emission testing in diesels has been adjusted (stricter of course), and I’ve never had a diesel fail in emissions. I can’t smell fumes and it’s had the usual MAF, injector and o2 sensor replacement last week or the year before.

any expert knowledge on what I should do with this, bar the obvious.

That's weird. You need to compare the reading with what's on the VIN sticker - this one is 1.83, older ones (Euro 3) are 3.0 maximum iirc.

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 18.14.48.png

Here is what DVLA say - no sticker, you're allowed up to 3.0.

A common dodge is to fit a Cambelt changed at ******* sticker over the vin plate, then it has to be tested at the higher value.
