What's an active exhaust?

I have had Tayne explain it to me before.

So, from memory: It has twin pipes on the back, and only uses one of them most of the time. When under certain throttle load or above certain RPM or something like that, it opens up both of them and makes a bit more noise.

Super naught has summed it up, there's a valve in one of the pipes which opens depending on rpm and throttle position.

I'd like to say it doesn't just give extra noise but is factored into the power delivery of the car but i can't turn it off so can't measure the difference.

It also means it doesn't drone on the motorway.

Oiks can cut the little hose leading to the second pipe and plug it with a golf tee to leave the pipe permanently open to make it sound a tad rortier. I didn't bother with mine. Good car, these, but I don't want one again.
