Christine
Them vag bottles level go up n down lyke yoyos My t4 might go bleeep "I need coolant top up! " once a month..then a week , then a month again .Maybe a cupful or so . Plastic thermostat housings ,with steel bolt hole collars , the collars corrode ,expand and distort the housing , and it weeps... it's never wet ,just stained red with dried antifreeze . Don't worry about it ...
bigfella2
Does the fluid level increase quite a bit when the cap is released? So the fluid does rise when the cap is released? Hate to say this but deffo looks head gasket related. Because there is so much pressure in the cooling system the rubber hoses expand a little, so when you released the cap, the pipes contract and raise the fluid level. Craig the Princess
If it's driving 100 fault free miles at a time just use it until something develops. Ohdearme, The Moog and Lacquer Peel
Tayne
I think i read somewhere about a variable level when hot or cold but now can't find that page on the web (I don't have a manual for the car).I'm going to take it out for a run this afternoon, get it properly hot again and let it cool and see where the level ends up. The new bottle being clear, rather than discoloured sodium orange, is both helpful and a source of worry.I sometimes wish i could be one of those ignorant people who walks through life with a smile whilst remaining oblivious to the consequences. Tayne
In other news, I found out last night that wipers can rock the car. Its not visible from outside, nor when the car is moving but can be felt when sitting inside (my passenger also noticed).I could feel it through the pedals as well. I'd put it down to the light weight of the car, softish suspension (though being an Audi it doesn't ride well) and what must be a torquey wiper motor to drive the big pantograph wiper. Tayne
Right, update time. My trusted mechanic has confirmed we are in a state of HGF. The car doesn't overheat but pressurises the coolant and i've been depressurising after every journey. It did drive 100miles without incident after i put the new expansion tank on but I haven't done more than 20 in one trip recently. I need rid so will be weighing it in next Monday (19/11). Zelandeth
Surely someone would be interested in taking this on. Looks to be a tidy enough example and these are interesting cars which seem to have quite a following. I imagine in typical modern car fashion that access and the amount of stuff that needs to be removed to get at it is the biggest barrier to getting the head gasket changed? Tayne
No, there's a fair bit of space around the tiny engine. I think the bay was designed for something bigger. Full disclosure, its not as nice as it looks in the pictures. The wheels are a little scabby, the paint has a fair few scratches, there is corrosion bubbling through on the rear driver's side door, the remote fuel flap release doesn't, the interior is still manky, the heater fan screams all the time, one rear brake has a slight drag, it will need brake pipes and wheel balancing, there's a clonk when coming on or off the power which i think is a loose exhaust and the stereo is horrible. skattrd

dome
These cars intrigue me, and I like this one. The fact it's broken makes it doubly appealing. However I have no money and need to lower my Toyota count significantly before I considered anything else. Would buy some roffle tickets though! Supernaut
£3 per ticket roffle for a broken car? Hell, even £2 a ticket could work (possibly, what are scrap prices like right now?) Springer
