That part looks like to be a resonator. Produces a clock frequency that the IC next to it uses.

EDIT: Oh wait, I think you mean VR[something]? Looks to be a sliding variable resistor should be there. The resonator is the 3 legged blue device (XL501).

Aye that's out of the changer. If you remove one go careful as the sliding potentiometer is screwed to the changer's body & needs unsoldering from the board before the board is moved. Except this one wasn't in the past & it'd snapped, either that or those bits of CD you found in it broke it.

MoaR info and pics over in the techy thread http://autoshite.com/topic/20640-techy-corner/?p=1618568

In other news, now I know I've got power out of that fuse & with how many 'known working' reversing sensor modules are on ebay I rather suspect a failed module is the reason they don't work.

Right update for today's tinkering...

As planned I took a look at the brakes, the NSF caliper was a bit sticky on it's sliders as suspected  all the calipers were rather manky so the pads couldn't move smoothly. I've been around all four & sorted this. Hopefully the slight judder on the brakes at times has gone & maybe even a couple more MPGs will appear (it did 5mpg less than the book claims on the way home). The OSF wheel was stuck on the hub so I kicked it to try & free it, guess which idiot managed to kick the manky arch & knock the filler out so it looks really rough now? It took lots of clonks to the back of the wheel with a soft faced mallet while spinning the wheel to free it in the end. I cleaned all the hub faces & smeared them with grease to stop that happening again.

For your entertainment* pics -

The now completely ruined arch

Richardthestag's MOT man must need to clean his glasses as I found this 4" long hole on the seam of the NSF floor/arch joint, about 3" from a jacking point & less from a chassis rail so should have been a fail I think. I'll have to get it welded at some point in the next 11 1/2 months.

One wheel nut on NSR was missing it's thick washer so wasn't clamping the wheel properly, I found a slightly large OD washer with a slightly small ID. I quick wizz around the inside with a grinding stone made it a nice tight fit on the nut & once hammered on it sits in the slot for the washers without falling off. It even fits in the hole in the wheel :)

I ended up wire brushing right along the inside edge of the sills & all four corners of the floor pan as it had surface grot etc, here's a before & after of the NSR.

Finally the OSR bumpstop was hanging off. I remember my XJ40 having exactly the same issue & I fixed that just the same with Gorilla glue too. Note the hi-tech* equipment used to hold it in place as the glue dried.

post-20217-0-26980900-1538239112_thumb.jpg

While I was waiting for the glue to dry I vacuumed the car out & sprayed furniture polish everywhere inside to get rid of dust & marks etc. I didn't think it was dirty before but it's come up well. I might wash it tomorrow.

My insurance swaps monday so I can tax this & take it to work, hopefully it'll fill the whole car park on it's own to annoy everyone else. I get 7 days cover on the Saab too, so that's ok for taking to it's MOT retest after I replace the coil spring.

Oh & I think one of the main mounting bushes for the rear subframe has split next to the OSR wheel. I shall have to ignore that for a while as it doesn't seem to be an issue yet.

I did a cleaning thing... I even fed the leather as I've owned a bottle of leather feed for years & never opened it. I need to buy some wax but it shines up pretty damn well for a shonky old cadmobile. I've also swapped the drive around from the just got home pic.

Finally I had to wash around this

I think it might need anti-freeze though, appears to be rust coloured water in the header tank. I think I need that OAT stuff, I'll check up & do that this month before it gets too cold.

I hereby wish to declare I'm withdrawing my earlier comment about the Saab being faster.

Now this is running sweetly and there isn't 3/4" of folded up mat under the throttle pedal it's that quick 50-100 (with no sign of it tapering off) that I was actually laughing, there is no way a drawing room should move that quick. I need to try a XJR more than ever now!

not sure I ever got the wheels off this car :D never needed to. that gash underneath though  . Tim is a mega fussy bastard, he wanted to fail it because the amber reflectors were missing from the front bumper.

Glad it is being used. missing the speed that the horizon can approach. but also the casual 77.5mph cruise on the motorway (50% of its potential!)

This is what happened to me once I got into XJs. Thing is the logical conclusion to the range is the XJR, so it has to be sampled doesn't it? I'm completely obsessed with XJRs at the moment. 3.6 V8 X350 is pretty quick too. Ran one for summer hols and it was rapid on French motorways especially since the car itself is quite light.

Having owned a X300 and a 9-5, while doing similar miles in both (~1k), I prefered the 9-5. Handled way better with less body roll, nicer ergonomics, more modern appearance and more fun. Shame the 9-5 didn't come as a RWD.

This is why you don't like the MG ;)

Major* update after the NPH meet.

I've found a major* electrical issue that utterly* ruins the ambience and cosseted feeling of driving this automobile.

Yes the J-gate isn't illuminated, probably due to a blown bulb. This will have to be fixed forthwith.

Daimler?

Looking at that envelope is more than 1000 pound notes*

*Yes I know pound notes haven't existed in England and Wales since the 80's but they are lush.

I bought a CHIPS motorcycle out of my last pound note back in '83 from Lewis news mumbles (still trading).

Still have pound notes in the Channel Islands...!

When I first got my XJR, 10 years ago, I thought "this doesn't feel much quicker than my 3.6 Daimler & the rides terrible in comparison". Its only when I started looking more at the speedo as I was accelerating hard away from everyone else that I fully appreciated the difference.

Its the suspension you see, its so peaceful & cosseting inside, you just don't realise how fast your going... The rides harsher than the XJ40/X300, sure, the low profile 18 inchers make sure of that, but the redesigned front suspension is a massive improvement compared to the previous XJ`s, refinement-wise.

I`ve been thinking about getting an X350 to replace my X308R because of this upcoming ULEZ bollocks, if I was being sensible, I`d get the V6 version, or a normally aspirated V8, for fuel cost reasons, but I really do love the modern jumped up Audi/BM/Merc/Porsche spanking ability of the blown V8`s, so I`m not sure if I could deal with a Jag without a supercharger again..

X350 super v8 I had nailed you in the seat, big top cog and a lead foot. 8-10 mpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Smoll update on a big car...

The heated front screen doesn't appear to work although the button lights up, I'm going to check for fuse or relay issues when I get around to it. On the entertainment front, CD changer ordered off ebay for £50 & should be here weds, so I can have noise at Eddyfest if/when we go up the hills away from radio reception.

Oh & something over 400miles done now. It started fine after being parked for over a week, which is better than my old XJ40 did. That used to struggle after a week. Current average MPG is 23 according to the dash.

Finally I almost forgot to say it's stupidly easy to get the ASC light on when pulling away in the wet.

This car appears to be self healing. The reversing sensors still don't work but they now give a 5 sec beep to say they are faulty when putting it in reverse. I shall ignore them for a while longer and see what happens....

because 4 litres and v8.

And the bangy gearbox when cold, it lurches into 2nd till warm after hanging back till the throttle is squeezed more.

It only does it when overnight temps are in single figures, if it's not that cold it just makes that silly noise you pointed out. Booting it more also cures it, but I'm a natural wafter most of the time.

I'm seeing if ignoring it and regular use helps as much as it did in the Saab. It's slight annoying though as it leaves you hanging in the middle of junctions at times.

Can haz Chooonz!

New CD changer arrived today so I fitted as soon as I got home. I might yet swap the new changer into the old one's shell. The new one has that damn yellow paint on the front and a big crack in the door. That's a weekend job for when I can be bothered with all the springs etc that they mount inside the shell with though.

Fluids need changing?

Richardthestag did it last year or earlier this year I forget which. These don't even have a dipstick so I can't check the level either but as there is no leak apparent & Richard obviously knows his way around cars I'd expect it to be correct.

At some point I'll talk to the local Jag specialist about the rear subframe bushes so I'll ask about this at the same time.

I had a look at the non-functional heated seat today. The good* news is the relay is fine and there is power getting to the seat. I must be the elements or the temp cut off sensor which means taking the seat out to check.

So have a pic under the seat to see how easy* the relay is to get too, yes the brown one.76a336cde8b45ac48fe6808f190db428.jpg
