I've always been slightly puzzled about the Rootes Group nomenclature.  "Hawk" is a great name for a car - a hawk is a magnificent creature, fast, elegant, and deadly.  So when they were looking for an appropriate badge for the bigger, faster, more powerful version of the Hawk, some bright spark said "I know, let's name it after this".

It's amazing that any of these cars lasted until now.

Those headrests are in completely the wrong place. If someone rear ends you then you're going to get awfully sore necks.

http://cdn.metrotvnews.com/dynamic/conte...

You're quite right. This is exactly what happened to me in my XJ40 when I got rear ended. Only problem was that in the XJ40 you can't adjust the headrests!

I had two of these - lovely cars. They drive well - one of the few cars that people actually approached me to say I had one etc. The brakes were always a bit marginal on mine and they do like to rust. Also they seem to suffer from water pump problems. As a lot of you will know the engine was built by Armstrong Siddeley for Rootes - beautifully smooth. I think the earlier single headlight ones look better - they were modernised later on. Sold in tiny numbers so Rootes never really made the money to replace them and they survived into the era of the Rover 2000 so were a bit old fashioned by then. Government loved them - used by Ministers and Civil Servants. The owners club were in my day (20 years ago) a bit fusty but hey things may have changed. Spares were a bit of a pain then. Nice purchase - now you just need a pipe.

I quite like the later quad-headlight front end, but I don't like the squared-off rear window that came with it.  Still wouldn't kick a late Imperial out of bed, with its Selectaride rear dampers and Coachwork by Thrupp & Maberley.

I have never seen a better match of attire and motor car, well done sir.  Both are quite outstanding, those Super Snipes always look absolutely massive to me, or is that just a trick of the styling?
