BX GTi 4x4. I'd forgotten all about these.

Wasn't there a 4x4 405 as well?

I had one of those (the BX - in that colour - in fact in might have been that one) They were true shite.  The transfer box was made of cheese and the unique parts (such as the exhaust) were discontinued they day they left the factory seemingly.

There was a specialist who charged £800 to rebuild the box back to cheese OEM standard so it would last about another 20K

Some Citroen beard told me there were only 310 RHD ones evah.

There was an estate too IIRC.

A Friend has a Renner Scenic RX4. It is quite frankly the worst pile of shit I have ever seen. The 4x4 system appears to have been engineered by a blind drunkard using the very cheapest possible cheese, The tyres are a size not available anywhere in the UK, the engine is overworked, and has hence shat it's head gasket, the interior trim is kak and it's really not very large. It also has shite ground clearance, and the spare wheel on the boot gets in the way of everything.

Utter Autoshite.

Where can I get one?

The transfer box was made of cheese

Same issue as the early LR Discovery gearbox-to-transfer-box-problem. It was splines between a shaft and a gear that are very poorly lubricated and then fret against each other, wearing the splines away until one day you go to take up drive and just get a clicky-whirring-grinding noise and no actual movement.

Killed the vast majority of them well before 100k miles.

525ix was 4x4 wasn't it?

Yes, back in the days of real BMWs (same sausage, three sizes) an X after the model name denoted 4x4.  Often not available in the UK along with the diesels that were deemed not worth converting to RHD for the backward British.

FCA recently brought out 4x4 chargers and challengers in an effort to squeeze the last juice from the Mercedes platform...  Still would though, there can't be too many 300hp 4x4 cars available.

They were built in Nissan's Sunderland plant in the early 90's.

Were they sold in the UK? I can't find any definitive info but it wouldn't be the first time Nissan had built interesting* cars in the UK but not sold them here (see 16v Bluebird GP, Bluebird 3-door Turbo). :)

AFAIK the Mondeo,Cav,405 ect 4x4's were released in order to allow them to be used in BTCC at the time as Audi were cleaning up with 4wd

The Mondeo even went as far as to be tested in rwd but it wasn't fast enough....

I don't think that's true - I went to a lot of BTCC in the 1990s - ALDI did win the 96 by using 4wd - but in my recollection then changed the rules as the ALDIs were indeed way ahead.  No-one else much used 4WD and it was banned for BTCC in 1998.

Sticking with the UK market, Mercedes 300 4Matic. I remember a lady of the manor type where my mum worked owning a 300T 4Matic.

Four wheel drive versions of regular cars seem to be making a comeback, especially versions of RWD executive cars. I don't see the point when winter and all season tyres are so good now.

The 2.0 eGT was sold in the UK & Europe, also lower spec (LX, SLX) available in Europe. The build volume was very low,so they're like unicorn shit should you decide to look for one!
