Barry'd from the factory

Yo Billy, I can't believe you're waffling on about a Ford Focus, when clearly you should be waxing lyrical about these:

Vectra_Supertouring_web.jpgVectra Supertouring - apologies for the scene of 6 but I couldn't find another image I could post. Bottom right and bottom left is how they were sold, though I think it's safe to say there weren't that many of the former versions left showrooms like that.

Volvo did the same at the time with a touring car liveried S40 - a 2.0N/A  I think, rather than a T4. As above, available with stickers, or a solid colour (again, white from memory). Both versions had tasty aftermarket wheels and side body skirts with aftermarket supplier 'shopping list' stickers, which looked particularly bizarre on the non-sticker one. Only ever saw one (without the stickers, natch.)

Not only the super touring... Vauxhall shipped vectra sri v6 shells to MSD (motorsport developments - competition car builders who actually build rally and touring cars professionally), who then turned them in to the 200bhp vectra gsi. This was my old one

At last, a thread that makes me realise I am more tolerant than I thought!

I'm completely fine with almost all of these factory efforts, though while the Rover BRM mouth is a bit too shouty for my liking, I don't see anything truly tasteless on the outside, (but the quilted red leather reminds me a little too much of a model in the late George Michael's Too Funky video - I'd be forever wondering what I'd see if I pointed a black/UV light at it, and if I'd ever want to get in again afterwards)

The Corsa and Fiesta Barry Editions however, should both have been stillborn, rather than encouraging two entire generations to behave like hooligans around council estates. Neither have any more taste applied to them than the homebrew efforts the Barryboys created on the cheap. Tacky and nasty.

If they're supposed to evoke an involvement in motorsport, they've failed, instead for me evoking the involvement of spotty teens without insurance, armed with stolen rattle cans and wob.

Ahh, now this is much more like it.

I know, I'm showing my age.

Uh-oh, the manufacturer's have wandered away from the target again. Wtf is this?

Again, nooooo! Can this be the same manufacturer that brought us the S2000? And the NSX? Did you sack the wrong people?

Well, who'd a thunk it! MB showing us how to do it right!

Unlike this MB owner, who isn't.

What a knob.

Now this last one I think is a mistake. Shirley this was never intended to reach the UK market! No, this must be a design exercise that GM commissioned while wooing Daewoo (sorry) into a partnership.

"Look guys! The Cavalier isn't finished yet! With just a tiny bit of work, you have the makings of these good looking, svelte Espero and Nexia models you have on your road map! It'll set your company on the right track, for sure!!"

Did GM not realise whatever shit Daewoo turned out was coming straight back to the UK market to further tarnish the brand? Good grief!

Still, let's look to the future with a bit more optimism.

Oh.

Oh shit.

Yellow half leather seets & door trim, fold out rear seats that had no roof (optional hardtop), yellow alloys, full bodykit, timber strips on the load bed, I give you the Skoda Felicia 1.6 'Fun'

everyone in focus scene raves about them and want lots of sheckles for them

I know, it's brilliant. Just makes complete ones even rarer (far less about than the ST170, for example) which is fine by me.

This one has got the wrong wheels on it but a tidy car...

and this one has the wrong everything on it, but was actually made this way at a Ford dealer's when it was new...

I think the point is being missed a little in the case of a lot of these cars. Proper performance versions that sported bigger wheels and in some cases , now dated , aerodynamic addenda aren't the same thing at all as just throwing I'll judged body kits or graphics at an everyday shopping hatch.

A case in point is the BX 4TC, it's an actual Group B car , the road going homologation version might look a bit odd, but Barried? No, in the same way a 6R4, Delta S4 or T16 aren't .

Didn't Ford Australia do some factory shaggin wagons in the 1970s? EDIT, YES, ladies & gents, the Escort Sundowner van, complete with porthole windows

GM in Europe (opel) had brochures for dealer fit plastic a few years with the Imschiter (sic) logos moulded in a long before they decided to do the Calibre. I think it was a rouse to use up 500 sets of parts they could not shift just before the end of the run.

Its sad that they missed a trick. they should have done it with the XE and they should have done a 2 door and a convertible version. both with XE too.
