Agreed, but I intend driving this some fairly long distances, and I'd like to get out not suffering from backache, tinnitus or cramp..........and it's not so much that old stuff is "dangerous", it's more their vulnerability to modern traffic and driving habits. The thought of doing a 200 mile trip in a something lik a flat head Ford Pop would fill me with dread...


A Ford Pop is a pretty extreme example though; there's loads of 60s and 70s cars that are comfortable on long distances and even pretty quick.

1988 Benz 230E, new battery
1993 Saab 9000 CSE rehabilitated
2012 Volkswagen T5 2.0tdi LWB (currently works-for now)

It's now tacked in.after some "chassis modifications." It all lines up, wheels are in the middle of the holes where wheels should be..............everything clears..suspension geometry is pot on........measured it all up, and we're just over a millimetre out of true.........

Those wheels are going in the bin...weight of engine should drop it another 2/3 inches

I agree.....unfortunately......the 403 isn't one of them.........this will have three times the power, far better gearing, and spares off the shelf..........

We also discovered that both mounting plates for the transverse leaf suspension [front] were about the part company from the chassis........which could have been unpleasant......

Going to use the Golf loom and ECU.........Plan is to fillet the guts out of the speedo and use a GPS transponder to run it......

There is another option, if you're keen to keep the original speedo:

So long as there is some kind of pulsed signal related to road speed, you can use this to drive a mechanical speedo. I've been using the cruise control sensor on the Stellar as an input, and has worked well for the last 12k miles.

After it's finally welded in, going to re-instate inner wings, with a small detachable panel for access to the strut tops. There's going to be plenty of room both behind and in front of the engine, access to everything will be far easier than when it was in the Golf...........rear end should be a doddle, as the floor of the 403 is pretty much flat, just need to fab up strut tower location, and top spring seats. We're using standard Golf 5 stud steels, and we might have to roll the arches a tad, or reverse band them [reduce the offset about 1/2"] and band them inwards so that we can get some decent tyres on it.........

Engineering at this level certainly looks like a valid way forward.  There's a Minor van running around Barrow that's a 106 diesel underneath.  To see it from across the road, you'd never know.

Regarding the engine swap, didn't someone on here do something similar and when they were done they first sent off the V5 with a change of engine number, then send it off again a month later with a change of capacity and no one at the DVLA batted an eye lid?

That's what I'm going to do.............and hope! The fact that I'm not massively increasing the cubic capacity will hopefully mean I can sneak it through

This is the type of thing which seems to be completely luck of the draw.  If I were doing this I'd be keeping every possible part of my anatomy crossed that the application lands on the Swansea desk of somebody who is in a good mood that day (or just doesn't give a shit), otherwise you could be in for all sorts of fun and games.

Poor old thing has suffered from years of "get it through the next MOT welding'.......everything will be vac tanned and stone chipped........and then wax oiled [other rust proofers are available.]

 

We now have a rolling chassis, engine in next week.....

Engine in, albeit sans turbo [plenty of room for that....radiator is going to be a snug fit, but it will fit......stereing column also in.......

Not sure why that would work, other than they have written software that ignores change of engine number as it Must* be a straight swap and ignores change of engine size because must* be a rebore.

If you require an engineers report confirming the engine size, I'd need to see it with the head off, so I could measure it.
