I love the sound of the proper oil filters, any recommendations where to get one from? (just moved here so not sure where the main stealers or better still decent independents are yet in Huddersfield).

 

Today I have been carting decorating shizzle around such as massive steps and paint and stuff, to Leeds and environs, car behaving very well, and I think I may be developing an unhealthy affection for the old girl :)

 

I still haven't got the bog roll out due to it banging it down when I got home, but I decided to sling the stereo of no fascia, and fit an old Tevion unit I had kicking around, with an ISO adaptor that wasn't a big snake pit of wiring hell - turns out three of the four channels in the car are dead, only music from the driver's side (Harmon Kardon - very nice) - passenger side worked when I bypassed the loom with my own wiring, too wet to test the rears, so I ran a four strand wire to the rear parcel shelf and left a couple of smoll surround ssound speakers fully floating - made a huge difference for a temporary fix :)

If one channel sounds this good with a cheapy stereo, then the fully functional sound system must be the mutt's nuts I reckon, up there with the jags and Lexii I have had of late, which have been quite simply immense - Happy days to come :)

 

I know this is tempting fate, but this seems no more bother than the old XJ40 Jags I have had so far, and just as characterful, with the added bonus you can get a full settee in the back without a sweat :)

Today has been another day of total winning :)

 

Not only did I get from Huddersfield to Leeds and back no fussing and fighting, but on the way back I decided as I had knocked off early, I'd get the aircon gassed, because that's all they ever need innit??

 

Long story short, the nice man said we've filled it from zero gas to massively full, and there are no leaks, but there's something rong and the pump isn't ;(

 

shall we book you in for a diagnostic sir, at fiddy odd quids an hour?

 

No, I don't think we will, I will have a crack at it myself, I optimistically replied :)

 

Well, I fanny'ed around a bit checking fuses and pulling relays, but no live feed to the compressor, so I decided in an act of genius to bypass all that nonsense and run a feed straight from the battery - result! Compressor engaged, fired the engine up, ice cold air in the cabin :)

 

I'm not an animal, so I plumbed the line into a live ignition on a plug that was previously stuck into the redundant alarm, and tidied it up a bit, put all my tools and shit away and off into the house full to the brim of Smug :)

 

I am aware there may* be a massive issue come autumn/night time when I discover I can't turn the fucker off without popping the bonnet and ragging the wiring off, but I will file that under "couldn't give a monkey's right now" ;)

 

I suspect there is a fault at the fascia unit switch which appears to be a bastard to get out and work on, is this a common thing with these buggers? Everything lights up like it looks as if it should work, but it dunt!!

It’s probably the pressure sensor that cuts the feed to the compressor if the pressure is low. Not to put too much of a dampener on your obvious genius but if it was empty of refrigerant then it almost certainly has a leak, even if they didn’t detect it (they often don’t on standard leakdown tests)

Keep an eye on it over the next couple of weeks but be prepared for a low to follow this high

Oh I am fully prepared for karma to kick me in the nuts with this bugger ;)

 

I wasn't even miffed in the least when the guy told me something was amiss with the system, I really expected all sorts of issues straight off the bat, apparently they use a dye in the refrigerant so if it does start to spew it's contents into the ether then it will show up so they tell me :)

 

I'm quite enjoying this devil may care attitude I've adopted with this beastie, normally I'm all over the little details, but that would be a swift route to the nut house if I kept that up with this one!

Status update,

 

been using this beastie regularly to Leeds and back to Huddersfield, knocking around and about, and nary a muff from the now virtually silent engine, mainly due to fitting a reconditioned kenwood stereo and fixing* the aircon so I don't have to drive around with the windows down anymore :)

 

This is not to say the engine is any quieter than the gentle knock I have become used to, just I have improved the insulation between it and my ears, so winning ;)

 

I found myself reading up on Landy forums and Pistonheads and so on about possible causes of the noise, and general issues of these motors, and despite the intense doom and gloom, I find myself trawling the bay for an LPG converted model, as I seem to have become bewitched by it's charms :shock:

 

I don't recall taking a blow to the noggin, or ingesting any mind altering substances, this appears to be a very real liking for the whole rangie experience, not least the fact that after a hard few hours graft, fifteen minutes sat in it seems to sort my back pain out 8)

 

The nearest to this kind of excitement I have come to in recent years was my four litre Daimler XJ40, which also was in BRG (ok the rangie is probably called something else, but it's dark green), in fact it just feels like a Jag on big wheels, but miles more practical :-D

 

How the hell have I managed to go this long without discovering the joys of range Rovers?? !! :? :-P

Better the devil you know, sort out the knock and get yours converted to gas rather than buying someone else's problems.

Don't bother with LPG, its genuinely more trouble than its worth. Have a look at how many P38s with LPG are for sale with knackered engines.

Look how many petrol ones have knackered engines too.
Those with LPG and problems have probably done a lot more miles than the same aged petrol vehicle too.
A properly fitted, specified and correctly adjusted conversion will cause no problems, a £200 Turkish DIY kit with gas ring mixers will just be a source of grief.
Filled up on the motorway today with 121 litres unleaded was £1.41, LPG was 61.9p i would be swiftly bankrupted at 16/18 mpg on petrol.

There seem to be just as many with knackered engines that aren't on LPG!

 

In fact finding running one's is like hen's teeth :shock:

 

If all goes well I may be getting sims00's Lexus, we shall see, I am finding these tall barges are the bollocks at my time of life and health :-P 8)

The P38 needs to have a sequential setup on LPG, more bits and more expensive - but it should also do better than the 16mpg everage that mine has over the last few years

 

Mine is a earlier 3.9 with distributor etc and runs very happily on LPG, well for the last 140k miles anyway. 

 

I have a closed loop (takes input from lambda sensors to micro adjust the mixture) single point (lpg feeds into the air inlet side of the efi plenum)

 

Cheap running for normal stuff. oil stays clean for 6k but is as thin as water when it gets changed so I tend to change it a bit sooner.

 

The only issue I encountered is that LPG is not quite as powerful as pez, normal day to day I honestly cannot tell the difference. BUT towing 2.5tonnes up a steep hill I did find that flicking to petrol helped me maintain momentum. 

 

My engine still has its original cam and followers at 180k, I had the timing cover off a couple of years back and replaced the chain. Plus the sump came off and no sign of black death anywhere. it still pulls very well and fuel consumption has not changed a bit.

 

I will get around to replacing the cam and followers should the heads ever need to come off. 

 

maybe have a chat with Tinleytech. I bought my kit from them and fitted it myself. not rocket science and the bits are good quality. they checked my car over before first fill and issued a compliance certificate for the insurance company.
