It'll weigh sod all when you come to move it.  I could push it about with the engine and box in while it was all on underinflated tyres so you'll have no bother.  Just think, by the time you come to dropping the rear subframe you could be in that nice new double garage you showed us.  Not that I'm at all jealous in any way.

I'm kinda hoping I can get to that stage and done before then! Blind optimism.

 

 

No. We're not jealous at all.

I'm still likely paying less for the house than your North London pad is worth. Just sayin' like. ;)

 

 

Moving far? I managed to get all but one project roadworthy last time I moved so it wasn't too much of a ballache to shift all the cars to the new house - just got a local guy with a truck to follow me to the new house with said car. It was only about six miles though.

25 miles, some of which motorway. So a fair way.

Either that or claim the bulkhead is from a Victorian stately manor and that it was part of a coal scuttle and that's where Austin got their design from, yours being the prototype.

Either that or it was me. It's zinc primer underneath and that went on ok. However the white enamel went on a lot thicker in cold temperatures. My suspicion is that the paint contracted too much when it dried as it was cold. Also not helped by me trying to speed it up with a fan heater. The tin said not to paint in sub 10C temps. It possibly may have been less than that... :rolleyes:

Door off without rounding off any heads this time. I did it all with my impact wrench with a Philips bit on the end. They did fight quite a battle, despite 1800Nm of "nut busting torque".

This outer sill has been partially replaced. I'll take some pictures underneath the outer sill later. It's pretty funky looking.

Love that mustard paint underneath - the colour of all Austin 1100s in my childhood memories

I do like a good bit of harvest gold. However my MGB is that colour so I've got one example of it already. Plus my wife hates the colour and as she's going to be hand rollering it, she kinda gets control of the colour. Her favourite so far is a sky blue kind of colour. I'm not entirely convinced of that though.

You cant change the colour! i so lovingly picked that for another project that didnt happen hahaha

This has taken a backseat recently as my life has been rather eventful. House moving has started happening quicker than I thought and my Nan has been very ill.

 

Anyway today I've had time to get on with some bits. My primary job on this car now is to get the passenger sill done. After that I think I will pause bodywork until after I've moved. I really can't be in a situation where it's not mobile when we exchange contracts. There is still the problem on figuring out how to move it.

 

First order of business was to tackle the previous plating on the floor to inner sill. This probably would have been alright to leave to be honest as it's strong, just messy. As this car realistically will only be a summer car it's not likely to get crap and dirt between the metal. I could use it all year, but to be honest it's got so many areas for rust traps (including these sort of bits making it worse) that winter will quickly destroy it.

I wizzed over with the wire brush on the grinder, then cleaned up loose/hanging bits with a flap disc. Then ran a couple of beads over.

Once that was done, it was time to remove the old sill. I had to move the front wing off a bit so I could get full access to the front of the sill.

 

I'm not sure how the wing is supposed to come off (I know bits are welded on), but brute force and ignorance got the bottom section moved out. I started by cutting the bottom off, next then pulling it out. After creasing the front wing, I realised that I needed to cut this arch brace.

It was fixed in some way I couldn't see from all the rust and underseal in the way. As the metal is so thin, I used a blunt wood chisel and a hammer to punch holes along this edge.

Which got it off as much as I needed. This bit is proper crusty rust. Not sure what I can do on this bit later as it's going to be pretty hard to find clean metal thick enough to weld to. But then it's not structural, so Krust and paint will probably be fine.

I then set at the paint and filler with the wire brush on the grinder again to clean up where I was going to cut. I've only recently started using a wire brush but I wished I used one sooner. Much better at removing paint, while leaving the metal underneath ok than a flap disc. Also doesn't clog up anywhere nearly as bad either.

 

You can see where the sill had been replaced in sections. The back and front are replacements while the middle appears original metal to the car.

Required a fair bit more cutting than the other side as more bits of the sill membrane stayed attached.

This all fell out from the front.

At the back the inner membrane had been welded before. However these tacks were weak as. I broke them with a bit of levering on a screwdriver, so this had to come out for proper replacement.

Then wizzed along with the flap disc ready for the next job of offering up the sheet steel to make a new membrane at the bottom of it.
