'04 Astra H - Fuel gauge prob

Hi all,

Astra sometimes cuts out with 1/8 still showing on the gauge and about 30 miles on the fuel guestimator. When I say cuts out I mean it just won't bloody start despite coughing and spluttering.

Did a google, it's a known fault where the thing doesn't recalculate properly and vauxhall quoted £410 for a replacement dash with upgraded software.

Other than keeping the tank fuller than usual, is there any other hack / bodge to make this situation better? - I can live with it but it just gets a bit annoying!

Ta,

Rusty

A line of tippex on the gauge so the empty line is 1/8 higher?

A gallon of pez in the boot?

Battery off for a day to reset anything resettable?

You might be able to flash dashboard software with opcom or something... I think red5 is your man here, he seems to lick Vauxhalls. Personally that sounds a world of arseache when you could just remember to fill up earlier. I'd be crimping when it got to 30 miles anyway!

Mine is exactly the same. When I first got it I parked facing uphill with 26 Miles on the range computer and it wouldn’t start. It also sometimes takes a couple of minutes to re-calculate after I fill the tank. My old Vectra B was the same, so I think it’s just a Vauxhall thing.

I tend just to fill up when the light comes on, in mine it’s around 45 miles range.

Whereas amys Zafira is deadly accurate and happily drives along with 3 miles showing on the display of possible truth and the dash light flashing away. Luckily she took the piss in the meriva which just had the flashy light and ran out so generally fills up with 20 miles left

Not dirty contacts on the contacting bit of the sender is it? Probably easier to just ignore the first quarter of the gauge and fill up with 1/4 to go though...

Is perhaps a small piece of grit in the sender preventing the float from going all the way down?

Had similar on an old Renault. Had to remove and clean the sender out which didn’t actually work and had to replace it anyway. But it wasn’t a tricky job, although a much simpler car.

Otherwise mental note to refill at a quarter tank is possibly the cheapest solution!
