Great fleet of cars! That Corolla looks so right in that colour and on the Watanabe wheels!

Thanks! It's late 80's all in one compact package.  :D

Thought I'd update this thread with a bit more treat for you guys too.

You may think that I've released all the shite landmark in this country already, but no. As promised, there's more. This one I've already chronicled in some other forums but thought I'd share this here too. And I'm sure some of you will probably squee.

Located a bit over 100km from Bangkok. Pattaya is known for many things, beach and whores mostly. But lies in the middle of it lies one hell of a hidden gem.

Datsun & Nissan Museum at Thaworn Phornprapha Hall of Fame.

The concept of it is a basic park where people can go and relax. But not so well hidden inside the park is a museum to commemorate Siam Motors Group. A distributor of Nissan and Datsun motor cars in Thailand up until the early 2000's.

Fantastic and with bonus elephants! :-)

Oh I remember why! The advert for Datsun 620 (as depicted) over here used an elephant to stand on it to show toughness. I think it's a reference that only a Thai would get but I had to include it in when I saw it!

Done a few things to the Corolla. The car is really solid all around without any mechanical faults. There are, however, some details that needed addressing. They're just tiny little stuff yet so detrimental to the user experience.

post-26170-0-13964800-1530698309_thumb.jpg

Keep fit window handle was broken so a new one went on.

post-26170-0-88613800-1530698376_thumb.jpg

The sun visor was stuck in open position, the mechanism was broken inside.

One folding seat puller also was broken.

The window handle was a new reproduction, but is exact fit. The sun visor and the puller came from a breaking yard specialise in 88-92 Corolla. They all cost me £2.28 each.

I also went and put on a centre cap from a Camry. It's not an exact fit but it won't fall off. This was less of an aesthetic decision (although I'd like to think that it'll fool non car-people) and more of it's actual job of protecting the hub spindle. It was £9.

The car used to run on LPG. In order to fit the tank the rear spare cover was cut in half. Which makes half the support for boot space being the carpet. I cut some thicc cardboard to cover the spare. Might be a little bit thicc so the floor isn't even but it was free and quite tough!

Little things that costed little too.  :D

Great thread, and it's brilliant to see the quality of some of the cars in Thailand. My brother is probably moving out there end of this year, so now I have 2 reasons to visit....

Thanks! Over here cars don't rust, but many aren't taken care of. And interior trims and plastic will be broken off in your hand if it's not specifically designed to withstand sunlight. Toyota is quite good with that but good luck finding something like a Volvo 850 without a cracked dash.  :P

I definitely recommends visiting both museums I've shared if you ever decided to visit! There's actually another one that I haven't visited yet but might do soon. (This one is for bike shite!).

Haha! Nice! I see a meet up is imminent.  :D

Korat to Jesada Technik Museum would be about 280-320km depending on where in Korat that is. Also you should go up Kao Yai National Park too if you're already in Korat. One of the greatest driving road around if you don't wish to drive up north. A Mazda 2 would be nice to bomb around too.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody already put Camry 1MZ-FE into an X-Type because some tiny components in the original engine went tits up and they cannot find replacement.

ขอบคุณครับ  :D

I think if you wish to go anywhere a hire car would do nicely indeed as public transport system is very much shit. If you don't mind a bit of chaos.  :P

Depending on where in Korat it is, it would take about 3 hours at least to drive from the capital. As you'd only be able to drive about 90-110km/h on the national road system. (With frequent speed camera). But if you were to go to Korat from Bangkok (or anywhere west), I'd still suggest going through Kao Yai National Park, especially if you have a hire car. This will be why.

(pardon the superbawful music)

It is not a detour, and it's a must especially during November-February.

The museum is West of Bangkok thus entirely the wrong way. It is not that far but with frequent intersection until you're way out of the city range. And most inconveniently, the fastest way then to go to Korat next would be to drive through the capital through motorway system.

If you're going to the museum on Sunday, I'll definitely be able to accompany you on a road trip. I might even be able to accompany you up to Korat as well.  :) (Might as well do that, haven't been there in a while! It's possible to do such a visit in a day).

Which company will you be hiring the car from?

The address system is going to be quite weird I guess!

The important bit of course is the Thanon (Street), Kwang (District) and Khet (Sub-District). There might be a Soi (Alley). While Moo is like a Sub-Sub-District (or village, although it wouldn't be obvious it's a village. NOT A COW MOO!). And in fact is being phased out already although if it's the old system then obviously it's quite important in not going to the wrong place! If you get the whole address then it'd be alright!

I don't think many people still do AE82, sadly.

Moo!

That picture would've been in Pak Chong which is in Korat too! The car appears to be Fiat 125 and ADO16.

@hairnet If you don't mind I might be able to look into the address for you! (via PM of course).

No, but I drive through Bangkok on a daily basis.  :P

Anyhow, we can't avoid the fact that road fatalities here is about the highest in the world for a reason and 85% of them is from motorbikes in the countryside. But as long as you're aware and being careful you'd be alright!
