This was unusual even at the time though. Seem to recall it being more yellow than the photo makes it look. All these were in a yard on Rivenhall airfield in 1997,they had lots more 50's stuff but the photos of those are shit beyond belief.

The following were in a yard near Lyons Gate in Dorset in 2003, I think it was Tytes or Tates but I imagine some of you will know the place.

This was my third car, replacing a real dog of a PC Cresta. One old boy from new before the dodgy classic dealer we got it from. A lot more rotten than we realised and with some truly delightful giffer repairs /bodges (household lightswitch screwed to the dash for the solitary fog light) but with a history file containing every fill-up, every service and every penny spent over their 26 years together, the handwriting growing noticeably shaker as time went by. Nonetheless a car I was fond of and would have another of.

With Amish Senior's 4-litre R, a 48k from new all - original boat anchor which unfairly coloured my judgement of them for years. This is still about but had an engine transplant about ten years ago. It now works properly. Both pictures from around Easter of 1998.

This should be the last of the really crap shots. Autumn 1999,Newfield Road Coventry and my A99 and Manta outside my house. Annoyingly this is the only photo I have of the Manta, bought from a council estate in Wolverhampton and definitely the fastest thing I'd driven up until then. Crudely modified and on ancient rock hard tyres, I owe my life to its unreliability although I had my fifteen minute commute down to seven and a half at one point.

Behind is L407VKV, a diesel Rover Metro which deserved better than to end its short life as a pizza delivery chariot. Rip little Metro, I still remember you fondly (and, not coincidentally, drive a lot more carefully in the rain than before)

Peugeot 403 estate there? Some racers near me had one on their driveway for a while, came from a local bloke who'd had it in a barn for years. I don't know if they raced it themselves, so maybe it got sold on and that's the one in your photo? It'd be about the right time.

The Crown is an interesting one. An awful lot of them got raced in the late'90s/early '00s. That one is apparently on SORN, back in 2003 and for a few years thereafter I think that would have been when it was still an annual declaration, so for it to still be on SORN suggests it might still be around?

This probably ended up going the same way. I was talked out of having this as a daily in summer 2001.

No, instead I spent more on this. I don't even really like Maestros, let alone full misery Clubman turbo diesel spec, but there we are. It shit its head gasket about four months later and a local farmer bought it to fix for his son. I was offered it back about eighteen months later but wasn't interested enough to own it twice

Yes, it was a rhd 403 estate with not much rust and its original owners manual (in English) gaffa taped round the passenger b-pillar. Funny the things that stick in your memory.

I remember that 403 being raced (I live two miles from Hendo) and the AC 2-litre below it...

This thread is brilliant. It’d have been around the same time I was massively into banger racing too, me my dad and my mate went to loads of meetings. Some of the cars they were using as routine at the time was amazing. I’ve got some old pics from one of the Firecracker meetings at Arena Essex on the computer, it’s wall to wall Yank chod and Brit classics! Sadly racing is nothing like it used to be anymore.
