So yesterday, I went to have a look at a car

A lucky black cat came to say hello as I left the house

And I walked to the station

Got on a train (remembering to buy a return ticket this time, just in case)

post-4462-0-59493600-1526995673_thumb.jpg

Got off the train and waited for another one

Got on the next train

Got off said train and did a bit more walking

(this just isn't the same when it's not 'live')

And I met the seller, quite possibly the nicest person I've had the good fortune to buy a car off. The deal was done within ten minutes but I was still there almost an hour later chatting away. I didn't take a pic of her in case she though me weird :)

Eventually, I got my arse in gear and sorted some day insurance and drove off with my new toy.

I didn't stop for fuel so no pez pics but how about a car wash pic instead ?

I've been idly looking at these for a while, this one appeared locally a few weeks back and no one had taken an interest - I wonder why ?

It has been family owned for many years and is in suprisingly good condition - the mot history is one of the greenest I've seen

The fails are only for lamps, I reckon this could be worth a gamble

Allan the cat is a lovely wee fellow, he sometimes comes and says hello when I'm messing with cars :)

So, first impressions of the a2 - suprisingly nippy and fun to drive (once I'd put some air in the tyres, it had been stood unused for a while), the little 1.4 turbodiesel has a pleasing note and should cope with my daily commute to Edinburgh and back. The interior is fairly light and spacious, it needs a good clean (autoshite beige fabric) but should come up with a bit of elbow grease.

The seller did mention there is an intermittent fault with the abs light coming on but her brother, also an a2 owner, had made a repair following info he found on the a2 forums. I later discovered his repair*

Doing a bit of research myself, this appears to be the standard bodge for a faulty brake pad wear sensor - I jiggled the pin and the warning lights have gone :)

ah yes, the funky grill

Pull the bonnet release cable and it hinges open

The dipstick, oil and screenwash fillers are here

Then you twist the two nobs to either side and you can do this

Neat, but what exactly is wrong with using hinges ? You know, like every other car in the world ?

These are one of a tiny handful of Audis I actually like, mainly because they've got some genuinely interesting engineering and quirks going on.  The little maintenance hatch on the front is probably the weirdest thing on them, useful if you've mobility issues that make lifting a bonnet difficult, but other than that very much a case of what is point, it solves a problem that doesn't really exist for the majority of car owners.  Still, they're interesting and while they do have that bland Audi exterior, the proportions stop them being a complete dullfest.

Aerodynamics innit, the removable bonnet allows tighter panel gaps over its hinged equivalent and therefore marginally less drag.

That's what Audi's engineers claimed anyway, which makes it possibly bollocks.

That interior is epic!

Could that duct be an alternator cooling duct? My E36 has one, I never knew they were a thing before.

Also, my parents had a VW T25 when I was a kid, and I'm sure its rear number plate hinged down to access basic fluid fillers and the dipstick, or am I imagining things?
