Thinking of selling Rover 400 auto with shite brakes for £200

Being that I’ve got to renovate the garden the concrete hard standing has to go so also that means Rod the Rover will most have to go.

It’s an automatic so it has a nice reliable Honda engine rather than A head gasket eating K series and is rot free although it has the odd giffer dink from the previous owner but has a nice long mot.

I recently spent £190 on suspension work to get him through the ticket but I don’t know how it got through with the brakes as they are terrible even after spending the kings ransom getting them fixed.

It hasn’t done many miles as I think it’s done 70 something thousand and pictures will follow.

Here’s the lying Honda D series engine in all of its glory and another few pictures I’ve just taken.

It needs a wash but it does scrub up nice.post-9282-0-81195800-1527012222_thumb.jpeg

It wouldn’t be the same if I got them the right way up but if there’s no takers it’s not the end of the world.

Only the 416 auto got the Ronda lump the later 45 auto had the K series hence why I bought this old Ronda in the first place.

The mechanical bits are fantastic it doesn’t use any oil or coolant and drives like a dream it’s the stopping I don’t like but it passed an mot no problem so it could be the BMW just has better brakes.

The only problem with the car is when warm and you brake you get a shuddering feeling through the wheel which I think is a warped disk but I might be wrong and it could be slider pins etc.

It has a long mot as well and all the handbooks etc

And I recently spent close to £600 on the car with the new calipers and master cylinder and the work needed to get it through the ticket so someone can have a bargain if they want it otherwise I need to find storage for it for next winter.

Yoinks.... If this were a 420 T-series I'd be on the first train down to Bexhill with a wad of cash.

Unfortunately it misses the Clayts tick list for a few unfortunate reasons, the main one being the auto box which just ain't for me, sadly.

No doubt I'll sleep on it and change my mind as I fancy a trip to the seaside. And £200. Well cheap.

Yep, the early HHRs got the same engine and box combo as the R8, as Rover still hadn't worked out how to bore out the K to 1.6 and 1.8 at that point. Later they changed to a 1.6 K (probably under BMW). It's a real minefield on the 216 cabriolet if you have an engine/gearbox preference.

Also, the D series cars have licence built 4 speed Honda gearboxes (discernible by the 1/2/D3/D4 on the shift gate) whereas the K series got a CVT box.

Yes, a lack of use causes the HG on the D to rot out. If a car's been laid up for any extended amount of time an HG swap is worth doing to stay on the safe side.

Don't agree with gutless, it's more that they're revvy and like to be driven hard (Rover describe it as 'sporting'), the manual gearboxes they came with just aren't suited to the engine. With the autobox, the 1.6 D is a rocket around town, though they do lack a bit of high end, so motorway economy isn't as good as it could be, though the cars themselves can sit at motorway speeds relatively easily, if a bit noisily.

I put it for sale on the Friday ad website and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing.

The first guy who came round just slapped the money in my hand signed the logbook and off he went he didn’t even want to take it on a test drive.

The added bonus was I had the old doors which had spare electric windows plus a new mirror I was going to put on and he took that away as well as he was a real autoshiter who said you can’t have enough spares parts.

He even had a Chrysler grand voyager petrol in a lock up with injector problems and turned up in a E46 so that’s what you call a true autoshite hero.

And what did I do with the £200 well I did what any car horder would do and used it as a down payment for buying my old E36 back as obviously having just two cars is never enough lol.

Not sure what car I need to look out for to see you around town now!

I will still be about

My cars now will be just these 3post-9282-0-06962600-1527353498_thumb.jpegpost-9282-0-99956800-1527353577_thumb.jpegpost-9282-0-41541800-1527353632_thumb.jpeg

The red one will be the wbod but to be honest it’s too good for the job as it’s a low mileage garage Queen so I might get the train for work during the winter and use it only when needed.

One out of three the right way up means I’m getting better at using this phone lol
