Ok as some may of noticed I am chasing another car in Spain. The seller seems to be ok but he answers my questions with a single line of yes thats no problem. If anyone could just give him a call to let him know that I am serious (just booked a flight for £37) that might help things along.

That 7 looks a bit odd from the front, like it has a black grille like a 14 or something?  Or perhaps it's just the way the shadow is on it.

Either way it's gorgeous.

Oh well this is not going well. He has gone from saying "No problem" to " Good morning tells me the owner of the car that it is not possible to make the deal, I'm sorry anyway I pass your phone so you can talk to him if you like 722138117 without another particular greeting" the google translate is a bit crap but it looks like a no go unless someone can ring him and tell him I really want to buy it. There is another 7 about 60 miles away from this one that I might be able to get a deal on as the flight is booked.

With grateful thanks to Ramon the seller has now decided he will sell to me but there are a few bureaucratic hurdles to jump through. Fingers crossed we can get there and get this lovely little 7 over here.

If you pull this off I am interested in hearing about the paperwork.
I have no problems re registering a car here but haven't yet managed to get a Spanish seller to make a deal due to no nie number or whatever it is they need to complete the sale and re-register it.

There is a UK registered red one on an 'S' plate which has been here ages, you'll find it on Google.

The difference with your previous purchase could be the registration as a historic vehicle. Sadly this one is not, and the process to register it as a historic takes time and it is about 500 Euro, so it does not make sense for this deal.

As a standard registration vehicle, and in my knowledge (so take it as a provisional and non qualified advise), I can outline the following, pending confirmation with the Transport Department tomorrow:

1. The vehicle needs to be SORN'd. This is a simple process costing around 9 Euro for cars up to 15 years old and being free for older ones, that is your case. So zero Euros for this. This needs to be done by the seller or a representative at the Transport Department. He needs to fill a simple form declaring that this SORN is due to "export", or to be more precise while the UK is still in the EU, due to "Intra-European Transit".

2. You sign the contract, fill a couple of forms, and the car is yours. This can cost about 200 Euros or so if you involve a local agent. Then you have HMRC Equivalent in Spain, that will calculate the value of the car and charge some taxes. Who pays those taxes is a matter of agreement between you and the seller (in most occasions, a matter of disagreement)

From this point you have 3 options, I mean legally ;)

a) You put the car in a transporter to get to the Ferry in Bilbao, and when you arrive to the UK you use another transporter to get home. In your case the seller has offered himself to transport the car to the port.

B) You put the car in a transporter to get to the Ferry in Bilbao, and on arrival you store the car at the port, waiting for UK registration.

c) You ask for a provisional permit and green plates before you leave Spain. That would allow you to temporary insure the car and legally drive it in Spain and all over Europe for 60 days, till you sort out UK paperwork. I have done this several times between different European countries in the past.

I don't know if there is other option on arrival to the UK with a SORN car, maybe some other autoshiters would know other ways around.

Well, option C sounds good for most of us, but there are a couple of caveats:

1. The car needs to be MOT'd in Spain. In your case, if the condition of the car is as expected, it would not be a problem (fingers crossed) Anyway it should be sorted in advance and would cost you 50 Euros. Only thing is convincing the seller to take the car to the MOT station.
2. You, as a person, need to have the infamous NIE (That is a registration number for foreign people either living in Spain or financially dealing within Spain). Good news is that it is not as difficult to get as people usually think (Well maybe I am being a bit over optimistic when we talk about the authorities of my country of origin) Let's say that it would take 3 to 5 working days to get it done at the Spanish Consulate in London, or you could do it at any Police Station in Spain (Which I don't recommend at all, delays are mental for anything ID related) More good news is that I can deal with that for you at the General Consulate in London.

Tomorrow I will make that call to the Transport Department and will update.

Hope this information helps anyone interested in the Spanish market.

Yeah it does seem a bit of a nightmare. Which is a shame as I have found Spanish sellers are prepared to answer rubbish google translate questions. Buying parts for the Seat has been a lot easier than buying bits from private sellers in France. Hopefully we can find a way to get get the deal done in the short time period before my flight. At least if it falls through I am only losing the £35 quid for the flight. I didn't risk booking the ferry as that is nearly £400.

I think I might of worked out why buying the Seat was so easy. I am fairly sure the seller was a policeman which might explain how I got away without the NIE. He photocopied my passport and on the "contrato compra-venta" The box marked DNI he has crossed out and written my passport number in. He did say that the plates would only of been valid for a couple of weeks to get the car back to the UK. This is certainly turning into quite a learning curve for buying in Spain. There is very little information on the net about how to import from Spain legally.

It is starting to look like I might actually be able to pull this little purchase off after all. Although none of this would be possible without Ramon's help (for a new member he has really excelled). It is quite a complicated process to buy in Spain but it seems my seller will sell to me as long as he delivers it to the port so it leaves the country straight away. I will probably have to get it picked up when back in the UK as well or take my trade plates with me. Once everything is finalised I will turn this into a collection thread !!!

Have you used ferrysavers.com? £400 sounds extreme for the ferry booking......Ohhhhh the penny has just dropped....are you going Bilbao or Santander to Portsmouth?? If that is the case then as it is a two or three day booking it is compulsory to book a cabin....that'll be why then...

When I drive to Spain I go Dover > Calais (cheapest I have managed to get it with DFDS out of season has been £52 return using that ferrysavers website - they constantly spam the heck out of me) and in prime season June time I think it was I paid about £130 return.

I suppose you have already but have you weighed up car and trailer vs. hassle driving back?

I looked at taking my truck across and was quoted something chronic like £350 return from Dover to Calais otherwise I'd be to'ing and fro'ing every week had it been more inline with the cost to get the car across!
