Foxwell NT644 pro OBD diagnostic thingy

Has anyone ever used one of these things and have owt to say about it?

I’ve wanted a decent OBD diagnostic gizmo for a while and just might have enough spare money just now to buy one of these instead of yet another car project. I notice they don’t cover Rovers (need to speak to DNJ to get that covered) but seem to be pretty comprehensive otherwise. I am not sure if this is actually any better than a knock-off Delphi thingy for ¼ the price though? The only car in the bo11ox fleet that it would currently work on is Mrs_Nutz’ 54-plate Fiesta, but if I get a PSA HDI motor or whatever I imagine I’d be glad to have it, and of course any nearby shiters who needed a plug-in could probably be accommodated.

You can get it from Machine Mart for £395. 400 sheets is a lot of money but if I think I am investing in the future, i.e. likely to get a return ‘eventually’ I reckon I’d probably treat myself. When I finally end up behind the wheel of a post-2001 heap of shite I know I need something decent for doing diagnostic stuff with.

Aye, the faux delphi seems to be the way ahead. I got a cheap netbook to use for garage stuff and while there was an incident with a temper tantrum and an axe that required another netbook, its been great since. I also have a knock-off Lexia, sketchy Autodata and a few other online manuals and stuff from the Pirate Bay all on the same computer. Its almost certainly riddled with Chinese spyware so I only use it for this diagnostic stuff and playing tunes in the garage through a cheap stereo.

I paid £30 or so for my ds150, run it on my normal laptop in a virtual machine.

Took a few hours faffing to get sorted but I don't mind that for a £370 saving.

Was that a Chinese one?  I've seen a few on the Bay from China / Hong Kong for around the 30 quid mark, but wasn't sure if they'd be any cop.

Yes it was.

I did a bit of reading and found that there are 2 or 3 different makers of this interface but they're all pretty much identical, so if you search for CDP rather than Ds150 they come up cheaper, mine is the same interface as this but not necessarily the same seller:

I just clicked buy on the cheapest one that was listed as being in the UK, Manchester as it happens so should have arrived pretty quickly.

After paying I noticed that the delivery time listed was about 10 days so I messaged the seller to ask whagwan, I specifically asked if they were based in the UK or China as I needed the thing quickly, they said they were definitely based in the UK and it should be with me in less than the stated time.

Anyway, of course the blagging bastards weren't based in the UK, there is an increasing amount of stuff on ebay where its listed as being in Manchester, or "UK, UK" but actually they're based in that other Manchester near Shenzhen, they send it to a warehouse here who slap a Royal Mail label on it and post it on so it looks like it was dispatched in the UK but of course it takes a couple of weeks.

I messaged the seller when the thing hadn't arrived after a week and put it to them that it was taking rather a while for the Royal Mail to get it 25 or so miles over the hill from Manc, and were they sure they weren't telling porkies about their location?

They insisted they weren't but when it arrived it was postmarked with the name of this dropship place in Walsall or somewhere, the upshot was that they refunded me a few quid off the purchase price to stop me leaving them negative feedback for lying repeatedly about their location.

Yes that's great advice, I have mine in a virtual machine, I also have Lexia on the same laptop but in a different VM so they can't cross pollinate their computer AIDS to make super AIDS.

The software is riddled wherever you get it from, so either install on a separate machine if you have one, any old XP shite will do, or use a virtual machine, again 32bit XP seems to work best.

Seriously do not use the software on a laptop you use for legitimate stuff though. It’s absolutely riddled with things like banking trojans.

I have awful visions of a naive garage owner installing it on “the laptop” - the same one that the business banking is done from

It'd be on a dedicated laptop - no WiFi and used exclusively for stupid car faffing/tuning.
