dozeydustman Posted March 20, 2018 Share Posted March 20, 2018 My brother's golf died just after Christmas with clutch failure. Currently sitting on mum & dad's driveway looking a little sad. MoT expired in January, and since declared SORN, but as he took that Focus off my hands instead of getting this repaired, it's just malingering feeling sorry and he asked me if there was any love for it on here. Local scrap yards aren't too fussed about taking it off his hands, which is a shame as it was a lovely car to drive around in, good ones are still above shite money. 2004 '04 plate. 1.9TDi 5 door hatch in Silver. Just coming up to 130k and passed the last MoT with only an advisory. Please note until a couple of weeks ago it was wearing a private plate and online records haven't quite caught up yet (check for A82REA which is now on retention). As per usual photos from my phone attach upside down. It's not an Aussie/Kiwi import! It does have some history and a couple of keys. It will be a tow away job if anyone does want it. The car is located in Gravesend, North Kent which is not far the the Dartford tunnel. Spoken to brother this morning, the car does drive at low revs, but over 1500rpm or so it slips, so you could probably get it up to about 35-40 mph in top along level ground before it slips. It's just a worn clutch friction plate that has failed. It is a DMF type clutch but it didn't have the rattle of death before the friction plate failed, so maybe just new friction & pressure plates. I do know in good order these cars are still valued over a grand so could be an easy flip-on for someone here if they did the job themselves. He's been offered £300 by a VW specialist who'll break the car, but in our eyes it's too good a car to break or put through the fragger, so £300 or I'll roffle it. People seem to like the 2.0 litre versions better but the 1.9 litre engine is supossed to be more reliable. Its worth more than scrap to any youff as they seem to love these cars. Exactly, if there's nothing else wrong with it, why break? That would be a waste of an otherwise perfectly good car. To me it looks like the Golf has plenty of life left in it once the clutch plate is replaced. I'm sort of tempted by the potential roffle - don't know why; I've got nowhere to put the car!! stephen01 Posted March 21, 2018 Share Posted March 21, 2018 Probably more money in breaking it than a fix and sale, add NO MOT into the mix and the repair bill can start to get to the sale price of a sorted car, plus if they are a specialist flogging cars, sales of goods act and all that crap that goes with it. break it for spares, frag the rest. These lads are just down the road from me: http://www.leeclutchcentre.com/ They did my Mondeo V6 clutch when the slave cylinder went (clutch was on its very last legs when they got it apart, so they replaced that too) for 400 quid all in, and on the Mondeo it's a big job, have to drop the subframe. I daresay they would do the Golf for less if they can get at the box easier (I know nowt about Golfs, but I do know that before I used their services they did a distant relative's Mk5 Fiesta for a ton or so). I'm tempted to buy and flip it myself but have no easy off road storage or way of insuring it. Happy to try and help out anyone else who's interested in it though. My faithfull old Focus that i had owned for over nine years.The thing is although i would trust is to go anywhere it had lots of things starting to fail the worst being a corroded wiring loom at the ecu that was effecting the smart charge and pats systems (but that could have be sorted as i had been there before but it's a big faff). If you added in the broken bonnet catch,mil lamp on because the egr valve was blanked off,slight knock from the clutch,bigger rattle from the gearbox and the fact the inside was filthy as we used it in its final months as a van then it just wasn't worth spending on. That said it would of walked another mot no problems. I did think about offering it on here or Ebay but a ''we buy your scrap car'' place offered me £200 for it so off it went with 0% hassle. It did hurt letting it go for scrap and i kept putting it off for weeks the soft bugger that i am. P.S the newer one on the truck bed was also going for scrap as it had recently had new injectors at vast expense then the oil pump failed. That was the thing, Car Take Back offered £25 to collect and £75 if we limped it 40 miles to the scrappy with the best offer. This will be a birthday present for her so I fully intend on getting the clutch sorted, a fresh MOT, full valet and then she should have a reliable car to drive.
