I've spent most of this year scrabbling about under cars and haven't got much more left in me for this. I just want a hassle free option.

I had this and it was ball joint shield rubbing.

What's weird is that it does it at idle, although less loud.

In all probability, a 2.5 KV6 might be a better buy, most of the diesels are nails either cabbed or just worn out. KV6 more likely to have been cosseted all its life by its octogenarian owner.

Would disagree with this.

The diesels are capable of many more miles with much less hassle..........sometimes.

Petrol has head gasket, belts, thermostat housing, fuel consumption, problems. I've probably forgotten a few more.

I realise it sounds wasteful but quite frankly I'd chuck the money into a better one and bale this one. If you were completing the work DIY it would be debatable whether it was worth doing, paying someone its literally money down the drain, buy one off someone who has been daft enough to chuck money at it.

I don't know what the racket from the engine is but the clutch is £4-500 easy, then the rear arms again another couple of hundred at the garage, before you know it you've chucked a thousand quid at it.

Could always stick it on Gumtree, mention the noise, hope they don't notice the fucked clutch and hope for £300 or so. A lot of agg potentially but you might drop on someone that will have it.

Ok after some encouragement I have decided that the least I can do is investigate the noise, even if its just to get closure.

A shit sleep and a massive turd of a working day have likely aggravated things, not the best mental environment to be making decisions in.

Off out running tonight, usually puts things in perspective.

Sounds sensible, man.

I knew that if I didn't at least have a go with the Gooner Twins, I'd always have had that quiet little voice muttering away, "what if it were just something really simple?"

It was a bollocky few weeks, but at least when the pair of them did go off to their uncertain fates, I was sure in my own head that I'd done all I could - and their maladies exceeded my skills and wallet.

The just-fucking-bale-it crew were right all along, but I'm still really glad I was able to confirm it for myself.

Here's hoping it does turn out to be something really straightforward on the Rover; you're surely due a lucky break.

Sorry to hear you're having more bother with this thing man, it's been an ungrateful POS so far. I'd have suggested top mount were it not for the fact it's doing it at idle as the previous owner to me did the nearside mount and spring before I got it. Might be worth checking the bottom engine mount as well incase its burst another. Investigating it is the right thing to do even if only for closure so you know you're not sacking it off for something daft but I can understand why you're at the end of your patience with it.

You have got me thinking. The upper aux belt pulley has rubbed away an as yet unidentified component that sits between it and the inner wing. Its a small dome-shaped thing that appears to be capping off some sort of pipe. Perhaps the upper mount has partially collapsed, dropping the engine onto this. Turning left might be shifting the engine further onto this and increasing the noise.

I'll have a look next week as I am investigating the Corsa's waterpump tonight as it is weeping a bit.

I havent started it yet because it only really made the noise after a short drive. Everything points to it, the noise right behind the dash, turning left so the metal part rattled off the inner wing and doing it at idle.

I reckon it got worse only recently as the handle of the screwdriver wore away and it loosened. The pulley and belt look fine thankfully.

I shall use it for the station on Monday to see for sure.

I guess not having to rely on it just now makes me more relaxed about whether it will or won't still make a racket and I reckon thats a good thing. I might take it to the station tomorrow.

The engine is still healthy though, so is the gearbox and the body and interior are looking rather smart now. Plus its sunny and mild for the forseeable future so that means I can shite away after the wee man is in bed without any barriers, as long as I'm in when the streetlights come on.

If so, that would be a fine result.
