Kia Magictits V6 (CLEANY UPDATE W/PICS 22/05)

From what's being discussed on the US forums for Kia and Hyundai, the delta and theta v6 suffer a lot from coil pack issues. Interestingly I came across the following youtube video about a santa fe suffering similar issues and turning out to the the crank sensor wiring.

Worth considering!

Have you scanned for codes? Not all faults throw an EML up and on a 57 plate it should have sensors all over the shop.

Not sure if any of the apps that connect to Bluetooth dongles go into more detail about fuel injectors and whatnot?

My dongle won't connect to it, and I've got an adapter winging its way to me. This was just me jumping the gun a bit.

That's smashing, didn't think about checking YT, the front bank coil packs were all swapped around between each other and confirmed to be working (at £130 each, I'm bloody glad!) So I'll look at the video again and do some more digging!

Might be worth looking at www.rockauto.co.uk for coil packs, especially if they are £130 each! Price includes shipping to UK.

1st pic is for a 2008 model with the later theta engine with the vvt, 2nd pic is if you have the earlier delta engine.

Optima is the USA name for the Magentis if you weren't aware ☺

How come when I had this bugger and asked the same questions, everyone deafened me with total silence yet 'Mr Popularity' gets all the help and assistance? Am I that unpopular?

I guess I can answer my own question... yes, yes I am really unpopular :(

Apparently the weather is going to improve next week. If that truly is the case then the cleaning posts will come thick and fast. Probably.

I've also managed to wangle borrowing my mates code reader are the end of the week so I can look further into the running issues.

Hopefully, we can get somewhere with this soon, as the Rover runs out of MOT next month and I'd quite like to get this out and about for a while.

Have you done a compression test on the affected cylinder and compared it with a working one? Just to rule out mechanical problems. Is the timing correct?

I haven't, but I didn't feel it was necessary because it was both temporary and intermittent.

No idea if the timing is correct, or indeed how to check on modern cars.

In my defence, I did set the timing on this earlier this week!

  • 1 month later...

Well, this happened a month ago, but I finally moved the Kia out to scrub off the copious amounts of bird shit.

As you can see, it was pretty encrusted.

A quick scrub later...

This was a month ago. I'll go outside in a second and post a picture of what the car looks like now.

So. I felt guilty about leaving the Kia alone for so long, so I did some work to it.

It needed moving over a bit so I could open all the doors.

Cor, look at the state of that. Can't be having that, can we?

Let's get this out for a proper clean.

41454779604_04063889c7_h.jpgKia170518-4 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

First up, the rear seat squab. Two clips on the front, and two 12mm bolts on the back.

41275496295_47c0c031f3_h.jpgKia170518-5 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Pretty clear-cut where the dirt begins and stops :D

SO. MUCH. HAIR.

Rear seat squab out, now to get the rest of the rear seat out.

42129243502_126b947420_h.jpgKia170518-11 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Piece of cake.

Next up, parcel shelf trim bits, and eventually the parcel shelf itself.

40368588950_45a93d5449_h.jpgKia170518-13 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

And out! Bit fiddly, but manageable.

41454647954_1264164c79_h.jpgKia170518-16 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

As a billy bonus, underneath the parcel shelf was a bit of trim that was missing. Happy days!

The cat came out to the car to find out why I was taking so long.

41454660434_c51fa9ad05_h.jpgKia170518-15 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Next up, all four kickplates to come off. Hate these snappy clipped buggers.

The seatbelt pillar lower trim, was next to come off. Forgot to take an after shot.

40368469190_bd059b18e2_h.jpgKia170518-24 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Next, the front seats. The passenger side nuts were quite corroded.

41275239705_262ad01d82_h.jpgKia170518-25 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Even the feet of the seat were corroded. Not good on an 11 year old car.

41275222615_258baeb3d1_h.jpgKia170518-26 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Lots of space inside now.

42175864201_9f8d522bf3_h.jpgKia170518-27 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

SevenPoundCar is now SixPoundCar. Aside from this and a couple of golf tees, there were no fun freebies anywhere.

41275188575_a34afe8117_h.jpgKia170518-28 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Centre console out next. Gear knob was thankfully an unscrewing jobby rather than a pull and pray type.

41275172395_f4aff09875_h.jpgKia170518-29 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

The ashtray is probably a source of the strong tobacco smell. Can't confirm or deny though.

28303286808_20b83114e2_h.jpgKia170518-30 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Footwell trim and foot rest next.

40368411230_b12c5efb07_h.jpgKia170518-31 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Bit of shoving later, and the carpet came out relatively painlessly.

28303266988_d7534453a8_h.jpgKia170518-32 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Which left us with this

41454458714_89e996a817_h.jpgKia170518-33 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

And, quite a surprise. Every available opening and aperture had some form f corrosion. Probably due to living by the seaside for a while.

Rear door cards came off. Fronts were clean enough to get away with it.

27303825817_7729f84062_h.jpgKia170518-40 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

Then, many swears later (I mean, who the fuck glues the loom to the headlining through one loom, then doesn't provide an easy disconnection point?)

28303183098_08fda455df_h.jpgKia170518-41 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

The dangling loom in question.

So, I was finally left with this at the end of the day.

40368277910_53a6a56138_h.jpgKia170518-43 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

And left with a large "to-clean" list. Pictures with helper dog for scale.

27303758447_f444771c5a_h.jpgKia170518-44 by Fat Harris, on Flickr

The priority for this now is to wirebrush the corrosion I found, and give it a quick lick of paint. Then, clean everything as it goes back in.

WATCH THIS SPACE.
