Dave springs a leak - has anyone used stopleak products for oil?

Has anyone had success from any stopleak type product for oil leaks? Im generally sceptical of "repairs in a bottle" products although I am a convert to K-seal....just wondering if there is an Autoshite Approved one for oil leaks?

This shitbox pickup has started leaking engine oil from the clutch bellhousing and the clutch is going juddery, so i assume the crankshaft oil seal behind the flywheel has failed, and my enthusiasm for removing engine and/or gearbox to get the flywheel off and change it is non-existent.

Its not pissing out, just a few drips when parked after a run.

Similar position myself. I've had success in the past with quite bad leaks from the crank seal. Can't remember off hand what I used, think it was Wynn's Stop Leak. Takes a while to work but then it should see it out for some time. I've never heard of one blowing out anyway so chances are the clutch will go before it does.

I've only ever used the power steering one on a bmw e30 I had that peed its fluid out of and it worked a treat I ran it with it in until I got rid, I know the car never got its rack changed by the next owner which was my uncle and it lasted with him as well

A mate tried a engine stop leak on a V70 T5 that was leaking out of the crank seal. Made sweet bugger all difference. So he carried on topping it up weekly.

A couple of months later, the AW55 gearbox that was banging previously started to loose gears entirely. Shortly after it ended up going off to be cubed.

^ I clicked on you're 'Click here for ignore list' out of interest and was briefly amazed to see it was the same as mine before reality swam slowly into place.

Slightly OT but is K-seal the best* HGF cure? I've spotted a little mayo in both oil and water on the Disastra and have no intention of fixing it properly.   Both require occasional top ups but have done for ages and it doesn't get hot in normal use pottering around here.

At noon today I bailed from work and went to a wee supermarket for something highly processed and preferably carcinogenic to eat for lunch and saw they had a tiny wee motoring section full of Magic Trees and jumpleads of a size suitable for starting a flat Ipod, along with a few different potions. I bagged a bottle of Wynns oil stop leak and tipped it into the motor. Will update with results in a day or two as even if effective I imagine it will take a while for accumulated oil to stop dripping from the sump guard etc.

Yes K Seal will probably 'fix' it.

Well it's in now along with some antifreeze to try and prevent a repeat of this mornings comedy capers.

For those who weren't freezing their tits off in Toms yard earlier the Astra's cooling system froze solid last night as a certain knobhead had been topping up the header tank with water then didn't notice and drove the kids to school.  After a mile or so I noticed the lack of warm air then saw the temperature gauge heading far away from it's usual slumber at min.  Another 100yds got me to a convenient carpark and by the time I was back to the car the hot engine had melted the coolant and all was peachy.

A month on - verdict unchanged. Its done fuck-all. In fact the leak might be getting worse. Clutch judder when pulling away is starting to be a real pain.

Option 1 - find a better product.

Option 2 - fix it properly. Which means deciding if its easier to lift the engine out the top or drop the transfer box and gearbox out the bottom. All for a fuggin wee oil seal.

The gearbox looks like it weighs about half a ton on its own, so my enthusiasm for putting the truck on axle stands, lying underneath it and fucking with trolley jacks and the like to wrestle that about is pretty low. It might be possible to take the radiator out and unmount the engine and with it on the hoist just pull it forwards enough to clear the bellhousing and maybe get at the seal? Either way its a pain in the balls that I dont need.
