What's it worth? 99 VW Passat 1.9 TDi Estate

Burnside

Recommended Posts

Right sadly my Grandad's been told recently that due to his dementia, he no longer fit to drive. Though in fairness he hasn't driven in 18 months or so now. In the meantime his 1999 S reg VW Passat 1.9 Tdi has just been going to waste. We kept it running for him and it's had a fortune spent last year as he was adamant that he wanted to continue driving, but he barley had the motivation to even touch it.

Anyway the insurance is due to expire soon and speaking to him the weekend. I think it really upsetting him seeing it sat on the drive and not being allowed to drive it. Then there the added headache of family politics over what to do with it. Should someone or nobody have it.

So I was thinking if I buy it off him, then sell it myself to get the money back. It will take the stress off my Mum and Grandad and stop other family moaning that anybody had a unfair advantage etc.

I've had a look about and tatty high miles Passat's start around £500.

My Grandad brought this Car possibly around 2001 [ need to check paperwork when I can find it ] from my aunties partner as a ex company car from his engineering business. So only 2 / 3 owner car. It has a genuine 110,000 miles and is in excellent overall condition for it's age.

Last year it had a new O/S front Caliper and front Discs + Pads and rear brakes either cleaned or replaced. Oil and filter change with Genuine VW Oil. New Antifreeze. Full Cambelt replacement including tensioners and waterpump. Plus fanbelt. 4 X Good Year Tyres. Brand New Yuasa Heavy Duty Battary with 5 Yr warranty.

Only faults I can see are N/S mirror glass has got a poor stuck on replacement. Rear wiper is a bit hit miss with stopping in the correct place. Clutch seams a little high but not slipping. Found it has a original CD changer in the Boot but there no CD holder cassette. My Grandad doesn't know were it is or if he even had it. Small mark like a Fag burn on one seat but my Grandad doesn't smoke so maybe from company car days. Otherwise Seat's are good. The other is although he has all the correct owners books in the wallet. I think he may have thrown alot of old service history away due to his health, but as I've said I can swear down that the work carried out last year was done as I personally delt with it.

Is currently taxed till 1st of June and mot'd till the 15th June 18. I know it will go through the next Mot no problem if needed before selling.

I was thinking this Passat is worth around £700? Is that a fair price? Would like to find this Car a good home rather than some knuckle dragger or pineapple dubber. As I'm sure this car has plenty of decent reliable motoring left in it.

Sorry if I'm rambling on, just hard knowing what to do or say for the best.

Some picture taken before Xmas to give you and idea of it's condition.

Looks very tidy that,

Only thing I'll say is just sell it on with out saying 'I'll buy it and sell it' family's can be a strange thing to deal with, especially when one family member thinks you're making money off the back of them. I'm not saying you are, but just keep it in mind. Voice of experience sadly.

Thank's for the advice. Agree family can be anything but straight forward when it comes down to money. Nobody want's to help him do anything with the car but if anybody in the family had the car. Then it becomes a issue of why them and not me etc. I just want to help take some stress out of it as I don't think my Grandad is well enough to deal with selling it himself.

If you did buy/sell it, I'd snap your arm off immediately for it. No messing. I've had a massive soft spot for the older Passat's.

I've gotta say although I'm not into VW's myself, they made really decent job of screwing these cars together and how they drive. Well I can PM you when it comes up For Sale if you like.  :-)  I hope that will happen within the next few weeks tops before the Insurance expires. At the minute just trying to find what paperwork we have including the V5 etc.

The Passat's covered barley 500 miles since all the work and Mot last year. Just thinking not sure if we better off getting a New Mot on it before we sell it on ?

Yeah I'm dead serious about it too. The AFN engine is great and I could use the practicality of an estate too. Pam's with my details for whenever it becomes available chap

It's a decent car for someone, will definitely be in touch as soon as I can. Just with the circumstances being the way they are, with family etc it slow going.

A small update. Managed to squeeze the Passat in for a Mot this afternoon. Has barley covered 400 miles since June last year, so no surprise really that it now has a 12 months Mot from today.  :-D Just got to see if we can locate the V5 now. Only found the much older style V5 document from 2001 when my Grandad first brought it. Looks like he the 3rd owner but will double check. Found some old Mot's and few old receipt today as well.

Hopefully once the V5 issue is sorted out. I can update the interested parties and the forum about putting it up for sale!

I'd bust your hand off at £700. £500 money tends to be absolute rubbish these days. I used to drive these back in the day and I can confirm they are really good cars. Solid as anything on the motorway, I'm guessing its got the pre PD 1.9 Diesel in it as well.

Not 100% sure about the pre PD on this to be honest but drove it around 40 miles today. As I wanted to give it a run before the Mot as it hadn't moved much for over a month. Gave it a mix of lanes, inner city roads and duel carriage way's all with ease. Doesn't matter how long it stood it always fires up sweetly. just as long as I keep the battary charged. I need to give it a wash though now after going down the lanes!

Little update.

Passat is now sold thank's to AS!

sims00 has been in touch as he sold his superb Corolla quicker than expected. So after a few messages and a viewing today, despite the bad weather. He has agreed to pick it up next week.

Felt sad driving the Passat off from my Grandads house for the last time where it been for 15 years, as it's staying with me pending collection. An also as it's the last car he will own.

But he thrilled that it's going to a caring home and It great that someone here on AS has brought it.  :-)

Collected this today and drove it back in the rush hour. What an absolute peach of a car. It is really a testament to the old school high attention to detail exhibited by Michael's grandfather. Really can't stress how brilliant Michael has been with this as well. Top man.

This place! No collection photos as I was totally exhausted from work and wanted to get home. :)

Mo you have been nothing but a Gent and that is much appreciated. It sad having to sell my Grandad's car under these circumstances as I've said previously, but you have made this a relaxed and stress free sale which has helped no end.

Thank's and I hope it does you proud. An cheers to everyone for there help and advice too. :-)

My Grandad has always took pride in everything he owns, car or otherwise. He started off with a Triumph Mayflower in the early 60's as his first car after owning a couple of motorbikes. Then he went onto a Vauxhall PA Cresta. He ended up with three PA Cresta's and even did a engine change on the drive using my Mum and her sister's swing!

Well bought, superb cars and a far cry from the dross VW produced after it for a few years at least.

I had a saloon one bought blind for £300 back in 2009 that stank of fags to the point that I had to strip out the whole interior and jetwash it in an attempt to sort it.

It was rough even by today's standards, mega miles etc but never once FTP'D, absolutely flew along, was amazing on Derv and was actually a really comfortable place to be.

I took it out of service for a minty mint focus estate I bought with a blown engine and while the focus was a lovely car, I was back in the Passat after a month because I missed the economy and torque.

A nice example as that is could potentially last a bloody lifetime.

My friend has one on 290k not out and his BiL is deep into the 300s now. From memory both have had a clutch and that’s it.
