I do a little bit of car logistics for a friend, usually around once a month I'll head out with the trade plates and collect a car from somewhere for him.

Today I collected a 2004 Mitsubishi L200 Warrior from Wolverhampton. I've always quite liked them, not too flash like the newer pickups and not overladen with electrics. 2.5 diesel, in black with the hard top for the load bay. Jumped in, leather-ish interior is not bad, and the dash isn't bad for a commercial. Tanked it up, steered a course for the M5 and set about the trip to Exeter.

Fuck me does it like a drink. Half a tank gone in 170 miles, that was a steady cruise at 65-70 all the way. Engine is revving at 3000rpm at 70, sounds harsh and needs a 6th gear. Stereo is good though it is an aftermarket upgrade with DAB. Seats aren't at all good for long distance, i was glad to get out of it.

All in all its convinced me I don't want an L200 given the mileage I do, but it is practical as a working vehicle and I'd have one for that if I wasn't doing big mileages on the motorway.

Anyone else experienced one?

I have a 2wd L200 single cab. It's a bit shit, manual locks and windows and the seats are pretty firm. It has an open diff and is hopeless in wet weather, it just wheel spins at every opportunity which makes it a chore to try and pull away quickly at junctions.

My ranger was more spacious inside, had comfier seats, central locking, electric windows etc and was fitted with an LSD which meant pulling away on wet roads manageable and was also gr8 4 driftin!

In Cyprus the L200 is the sportscar of choice for the natives.  To blend in we bought a Vauxhall Brava (which is an Isuzu with different badges) wearing a Truckman canopy, and it was an ideal too for most of the time we were there, although it did eat its turbo.  Isuzus are very popular there too.  Most of both have four-wheel-drive (mine didn't) and they are often the first car your son drives.

We had a Warrior at my old work.

It, uh, had wheels. It went. Slowly. Everything about it felt indirect. Gear ratios were straight from a Metro 1.0L and it was improved marginally when it was decided it should have a performance boosting resistor pack installed in the loom, which didn't really make it much faster but put more of the fuel tank out of the exhaust as soot.

I'm trying to think of any redeeming features but have failed to.

Only experienced them from 3 feet away from my rear bumper on a motorway, it's almost like sitting in one. They are the new Astra van.

We bought a shit load of these at work as some areas of the work needed off road capability. They were shite. Ours always had the diff lock light on, no matter what. Small cab, uncomfortable, shite to drive, turning circle of an aircraft carrier. Try getting four none too slim blokes in one dressed to keep warm outside when they got to the job!

Replaced them with Rangers, far, far better piece of kit.
