Livin' in a box, livin' in a LDV box...

In the UK, amongst other places, houses are not bought for living in. Instead they are a source of income. Unsurprisingly fewer and fewer youngsters have a chance of buying a property like previous generations who not only paid relatively lower prices, but got mortgages easier too. Now those who cannot afford to buy are punished by paying rents which are artificially high. Even more unfortunate is that those willing to pay the rent and with few other options aren't allowed to rent because estate agents stringent affordability criteria. When we were moving out of one private rented house the estate agents sent round dozens of families to look at the house. Most of them really needed to find somewhere (some did not have anywhere but a friends place to stay) but alas one by one they got knocked back by the estate agents. It kept going on and on till we called a halt to it and said no more messing around till the house was vacated.

In summary, is it really surprising people are doing desperate stuff like that? The article on this is nearly making out that it's ok. It isn't, the person is clearly at risk of being harmed at night living on the street.

I do something similar albeit during my working week which is three days/nights away from home, however nothing as luxurious* as an ldv, more a humble Zafira.

The joy** is that I have a shower, toilet and washing facilities etc in work so that's all taken care of so really is just a place to sleep.

It's been hard over winter as it's been frosting inside add well as out but I also have an unit share so I've run an extension lead or to a "two bar" heater but rarely needed it on more than about 25 mins which I can do off an inverter.

I am also lucky in that I have a safe place to park it everyday as long as I'm careful, does make a difference.

I did it before to survive financially in Aberdeen add the rents were horrific and that was all on the streets and it does get a bit sketchy sometimes, the best thing to do is park up on a residential area but not outside people's houses etc otherwise you get spotted and people start trying to get you to move/damaging your car etc.

I did it up there until October when one side of me practically froze and I said no more however darn sarrrrrrffffff I've done it for nearly a year and had no issues at all.

Saves me between £350-400 a month on wasted accommodation.

I'm suspicious there's a bloke living in a 58 plate Transit in my town centre. It's never there in the day but every night when the parking is free it appears on the street outside the local library and post office.

Library generally has free wifi..... not a bad plan at all.

I don't reckon I'd get away with it, I snore loudly enough to set off car alarms of vehicles parked alongside.

I got caught in my transit doing this exact thing, I parked on the road into the mill where I worked in Aberdeen but my "usual" spot was gone so I had to park a bit closer than I would have liked.

Cue dozing off heavily and at about 3am I woke hearing two lads I worked with muttering saying they were sure someone was making a noise from the back of the van. They stayed for about 20 mins then went back in after their break. I did doze back off then heard them again at about 5am and this time luckily for me a guy was smoking with them that knew it was my van and what I was up to so they moved off and no more was said.

He approached me and said they went sure what the fuck to do, if they should do anything!!! He convinced them I was just a mad Welshman and that I'd most likely driven up overnight and fallen asleep by work.

Thing was, as I was maintenance and pretty much on my own until 8am but starting myself at 530 then, I had a few hours to "recharge" my slightly lost sleep.

Nights was a much better experience as you could sleep easily in the daytime as nobody worries about where the car is parked, I used to park up near Torry battery and wake up about 4pm, open the side load door and have a nice long piss outside while the Aberdeen to Shetland ferry sailed past.

Good times.
