What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Just been out to shift cars around.  Started the Buick up and backed it out of its space so I could replace it with the Saab.  Left it idling while I moved the Saab, and looking at it over the other side of the car park with its eleventy million lights on, the V6 idling and the radiator fan roaring away, it looked like some kind of massive beast poised to pounce.  Brilliant.

That’s proper weird....I did exactly the same and blagged a job at ANC in Leeds back in 1990 having never driven a 7.5t before.

They had another huge 7.5t box van that was really old , I was asked to back it in the building to unload 3t of plastic sheets , got in it and the handbrake lever was on the floor , cable brakes , I lifted it and it was loose so I assumed the cable had snapped as it was in gear

Backed it in thinking this is going well when they started shouting drive it out , drive it out with a lot of arm waving

Odd but I did as they asked

Can't you smell that , smell what , the fucking brakes , I got out they were smoking and it stunk , turns out you release the handbrake by lifting the lever to the top then press the button not back it up across the yard with it on

That’s proper weird....I did exactly the same and blagged a job at ANC in Leeds back in 1990 having never driven a 7.5t before. We had a fleet of Merc 814s which were decent old things...one in particular was known as the lamp van as it was previously owned by British Lamps and as such had an extended box as it had previously carried light bulbs, a bulky but relatively light commodity.

Being the new driver, I was allocated the Leeds city centre route, van 1, driving yes, you guessed it, the lamp van...fuck knows who thought it a good idea to put the biggest truck on the tightest route, in and out of underground delivery bays and through the pedestrian areas, but it didn’t half enable you to hone your manoeuvring skills.

Used to have to sort your own route, load your truck and get out into the city with 130+ drops a day of which around twenty-thirty had to be completed by 10am when the bollards went up in the city centre precincts.

Then it was onto the office blocks, dropping of reams and reams of printer paper which was always fun when they had to go to the 12th floor and the lift was out of order.

Next it was the hospitals, LGI and Jimmys where all the major departments had their own goods in bays scattered across vast areas, before heading up to Leeds university where once again, you could find you had maybe 20 different drops all over the campus.

Finally, there was 6-7 collections to do scattered around the suburbs before you could finally head back to the depot.

God, I really, really* loved that job.

you got me curious :)

im not actually aware of a company called "British lamps" there was however a Lightbulb company and manufactures called British Electric Lamps Ltd

or "Bell" for short, which is what they used on all their lamps and packaging along with their logo of a bell, they mostly specialised in making decorative lamps of various designs

(do you have any pictures of the lorry? :) )

Ahh yes much like an XJ-S or C4 Corvette handbrake then ?

Any pics?

I would have got a GT86 if I could have fitted my bike in the back.

Only one, and it involves plastidip and a sticker.

Basically I'm "blacking" all the silver trim (I've left the fiddly bits till last, see picture). I've also done the main dash panel as this is the "famous" fake carbon fibre bit.

Then I'm getting a new gear knob, and probably getting the dash binnacle done in suede to match the seats.1c70f295ad7c191d259e258f3490c26d.jpg

I was quite pleased to see the pollution, I didn't think we had any working chimneys in this country ( the UK) any more.

I was also surprised to hear a lady in one of the many charity shops say to a colleague " It's payday at the steelworks today, people will be collecting stuff we've put to one side"

I didn't know there were any steelworks left , but how poorly paid must they be if they have to wait for payday to buy stuff from a charity shop? I bet once upon a time it was a very well paid job.

No diecast in any of the charity shops either!

The steelworks are owned by Tata, there have been threats of closure, it is still a significant local employer.

Local joke regarding the pollution:

Is that the sun or the moon?

I don't know, I'm from Port Talbot

That would have been the company...British Electric Lamps. No pics, I’m afraid...it was in the days before digital cameras but it was just a bog standard white 7.5t with a bloody extra long box on the back and a rear roller shutter.

I have been driving a bus.

Left turns are interesting

If the steering wheels are in front of you the get to corner then steer around it.

If the steering wheels are behind you the go past the corner then steer around it.

It takes a bit of getting used to (that and the stupid long wheelbases that some buses have) but it becomes second nature after a while.

I have seen toddlers being better liars... Not able to talk yet toddlers.

8:20 onwards is amazing.

A bit controversial and possibly sexist too, but what the heck...

If her Egyptian jail was such a hellhole and she was treated as badly as the press would have you believe, how did she manage to finish her sentence a good stone heavier than she started it?

The typical media shit storm of how dare Johnny Foreigner lock up a UK citizen! Often in the same broadcast as suggesting any foreigner over here is a criminal and should be locked up. I am sure there are genuine cases of people locked up abroad (and in the UK) who are innocent, but this person took drugs she admits she knew were illegal into Egypt and was convicted by their courts. Whether the prison was nice or a hell hole doesn’t matter much to me, she did the crime so deserved to do the time and does not deserve to be treated like some sort of celebrity when she gets released.

Exactly. I'm no fan of Piers Morgan but at least he asked the hard (but obvious) questions.
